Agraharams were given lands to Brahmins by the King or local Chieften (land owners) to maintain a temple or spiritual worship. I hail from the lineage of Granpathi Agraharam near Tanjaour temple. My great-great father Venkatramanan Shastri was from that place as it was narrated to me by my own father. My grandfather joined Central Railways and moved to Nagpur as a Doctor and bought a place in Harda where the family used to meet. All sons/brothers went to different vocations and places. My father even though he studied in Nagpur fluent in Hindi/Marathi/English married a traditional girl from Loyola College from Madras. My mother knew little words of Hindi but after marriage thrown into the Hindi heartland of Raipur in then Madhya Pradesh did her best to fit in. She adapted quickly and became a zoology professor and my father became Principal of a post-graduate college in MP. The grandchildren are now living all over the world but I recently visited India to visit the old temples as I wanted my son to show the ancestral heritage and we visited the Ganapathi Agraharam near Tanjaour on our way to Kumbakonam, it suddenly struck me how the Globe is shrinking. Before it was considered a sin for a Brahmin to cross the sin, the great dilemma Vivekanand faced before he was ordered by Goddes Kali to do so, what a great sin it would have been to hide the Vedic Culture secluded to India? We can cross the continents in one night as proved by my own experience as I caught a flight from LA to Melbourne in perfect comfort. To cut a long story short we could not connect with any of my ancestors but their spirit lives in me and my progeny as we move forward to shape the new world.
