But apples have a lot of sugar. which is not good for the kidneys
Not necessarily. one medium sized apple contains about 19grams of natural sugars which is balanced with about 4.4 grams of fiber. The glycemic index of apples is around 32 to 38 which is almost half as the glycemic index of table sugar, which is 65. In simple terms, it's going to take twice as much time for an apple to cause the same rise in blood sugar as table sugar. Diabetics with kidney disease can still safely eat 1/2 apple (whole fruit) to minimize the affect of sugar. Hope that helps! 🙂

sounds okay; apples are less likely to affect creatinine levels, but contain small amounts of potassium. You can also discuss that with your healthcare expert; probably they'll allow eating one whole medium sized apple, keeping in view your health condition and needs.

Unsalted popcorn, aople slices with sprinkle of cinnamon, plain rice cakes with thin layer if cream cheese wirh slices of cucumber(two a day), blueberry smoothy(1/2 cup of blueberries and 1/2 ctof low fat milk), carrot sticks with 2 tbsp plain hummus, 5-6plain rice crackers with cucumber slices( can add thin layer of cream cheese and herbs), strawberries and unsweetened whipped cream, almond butter on white bread.

Watermelon & Melon are different fruits. Watermelon is indeed a healthy fruit, but its high in potassium and natural sugars. Kidney disease patients, especially the ones with diabetes should stick to small servings of watermelon. Like we always say, moderation is key! 🙂

well, it's not about whether potassium is good or bad; it's about how much is it bad. It's a fact that potassium is an essential mineral and our bodies need it for various crucial funcitons, particularly maintaining blood pressure and regulating heartbeat. The problem starts when someone's kidneys are unable to filter it out properly. That's where many CKD patients need to restrict the amount of potassium they consume throughout the day. That's mainly why low-potassium foods (including fruits and vegetables) are recommended so that CKD patients can get enough potassium without overloading their kidneys with excess amounts. In some videos, spinach was reported to be fatal to kidneys. Watermelon was advocated in some while deprecated in some. There're many other contradictions also.
I have noticed the same contradicting statements in other videos as well. It makes doing the right decisions harder.

It's true that spinach is high in both potassium and oxalates compared to most leafy greens, but what's more important is to be mindful of its serving size. Spinach contains over 550mg potassium per 100g, but if you reduce the serving size to less than a half cup, (which is around 30g), potassium amount will reduce to approximately 167mg, making it safer. Boiling spinach before cooking and draining the water further helps lower potassium content. Similarly, 1 wedge of watermelon (286g) has about 320mg potassium. The safer serving size of watermelon is less than a cup (about 150g). So it's all about moderation and making smart choices when it comes to portion sizes. Hope that helps 🙂

leafy greens in general, yes. But not all of them; only the ones low in potassium per serving. Examples: green leaf lettuce, arugula, butterhead, endive, iceberg, looseleaf, red leaf, romaine, and watercress lettuce generally less than 160mg potassium per 1-cup serving (on average).
