    I’ve been weaving for over 30 years. May I suggest investing in an AVL Warping Wheel. Makes sectional warping a dream - no winding on of bobbins - no tension box. Spoil yourself - you’ll also find it speeds up weaving

      I much wish I could use a warping wheel. My current studio space is so small I can’t fully extend the supports on my spool rack much less for anything else back there. Unfortunately there would be no way to use the warping wheel… but maybe some day when I have the perfect space.

    I'm so sorry that you're going through this right now. Our men's knitting retreat that is normally held at the YMCA Blue Ridge Center in Black Mountain every November is, needless to say, canceled this year. There are about 30+ of us that come from as far away as Seattle for this retreat. Since we're not likely to find an alternative location for our retreat on short notice, we'll be staying put in our homes. That said, having seen your video, I'm going to suggest to my group that we spend some time crafting items that can be donated in and around WNC for the coming cold weather. I, myself, am in Chapel Hill, and I will plan to drive to the area as soon as I can make it there safely and without being in the way of first and second responders. I will hope to find a way to pitch in with whatever help I can offer. This will be a good alternative activity for me since our retreat will have to be canceled this year. My name is Scott. I stumbled across your channel just a few weeks ago. I'm also a spinner and a weaver but I'm sure not as prolific as you appear to be. Take care of yourself and thank you for your content.

    Yikes! Even on sale this fiber was $47 a pound when I looked just now. Really, after spinning it looks a lot like some of the undyed fleece I processed and spun. Kind of a pleasant mix of natural shades. Your e-spinner makes the spinning look so meditative. Just the thing to calm the nerves after all you have been through! And on that topic I am so glad to hear you are mostly unharmed by the storm. It was simply incredible to see it reach as far inland as it did. I have had North Carolina and Virginia in mind for my next (probably last) home and have looked around there quite a lot online. Now I see it isn't just the coast that catches the storms! Poor Asheville!

      Thanks for your kind words. I bought this fiber on Black Friday sale years ago… and after spinning 8 ounces I know I will need twice the amount I have. I’m now thinking of spinning some white corriedale that I have and plying it will that to stretch the yardage, however the corriedale is not as soft… but I really don’t want to buy more fiber. Ugh

    I have a big old wheel made for cotton I think because the spindle is just under six inches long. I never used the Minors Head, I went direct drive (52:1). I have been spinning for 40 years and also started out on the Ashford Traditional. Got the Walking Wheel for a song so I used it for the Woolen spun singles and plied on the Traddy. My Cops (copse, copps) are cone shaped. To keep the spun yarn from squeezing off the tip while spinning, I wrap a rubber band around the spindle about an inch from the tip. Never had any need for quills, I just remove the rubber band, put my thumb on the end of the spindle and pull off the Cops. You quickly learn to precisely control the twist in the yarn and keep it consistent which means great 2-ply yarn in the end. I have met so many people that told me that they couldn't use the walking wheel and it has never taken more than twenty minutes for me to get them happily spinning. It must be something bred into me because the first time I saw a Walking Wheel, I knew I could do it. Great video!

    I have never used my antique pirn winder to spin (I use it to wind off of my other antique wheels) but why not? Love it! I noticed that it may have a wooden wheel axel-word of caution: hit it with petroleum jelly or similar every. time. you. use. it. So much more fragile than the forged metal variety.

    Thanks for another video Mr. Weft Wright! I don't currently have space for looms but wondered if anyone else might like this: I am very frugal and the horror 😱 of using my project yarn to tie on with only to cut so much of it when removing from the loom was the origin for this idea. I used to keep my loom set up with cheap yarn on both front and back beams. Something like rug warp worked well. To these I would use one of your handy knots to fasten on my project yarn. The knots must be able to pass through the dents for a few rows of weft in order to maximize the savings but it always worked out for me.

    Good morning Trent...thank you for this nicely done video. I use an AVL warping wheel for my sectional warping. My question to you is this...on my old AVL loom, I could wind the warp on without messing with the brake as it only prevented the warp from being "unwound"...that is while advancing the warp during weaving. The brake did NOT prevent the sectional beam from going backwards as when winding on. So, on my David 3 the brake cable prevents the sectional beam from moving in either direction without the brake being disengaged. I have been removing the cable from the spring to wind on....Is this what you do? Thanks so much...cheryl

    • @TheWeftWright
      @TheWeftWright 2 місяці тому

      You can loosen the brake tension enough to wind the Warp on, but this wears out the wooden brake drum and wastes time in finding the right tension again. I just disconnect the cable as you mentioned. I think this is what Louet intended and it works well for sectional warping because we tend to warp in with higher tension than traditional warping.

    Does it allow winding in both directions? I have found with winding cakes that its best to do it once clockwise then once anticlockwise so the yarn doesn't have any extra twist added, so would this be possible with this cone winder? Cakes have served me well for my machine but it would be neat to upgrade

    • @TheWeftWright
      @TheWeftWright 2 місяці тому

      It is based on the systems used by industrial mills and cannot run in the opposite direction. I’ve never had an issue, but I suppose if you had a loosely piled yarn and the twist was going in the same direction it could be a problem.
