I'm a truck driver. I am not an airplane pilot. But i suppose i can buy a small plane, load my beloved family up and go look for the worst weather in the country, and go ahead and fly right on to it. I guess that would make me a kamikaze

Couple notes. You don't "just" go up over 18,000 feet as that is Class A airspace where you need the instrument clearance (I suppose he would have just accepted it as we saw later) and mention about oxygen could use expansion. FAA requires it for the pilot after 30 minutes between 12,500 and 14,000 feet and all the time above 14,000 feet; then being "offered" to everyone over 15,000 feet. Based on how much the pilot ignored rules I wonder if he even used oxygen at all and his worsening decision making and flying abilities may have been influenced by hypoxia? Btw, the armed forces use better criteria and require oxygen at over 10,000 feet, and that is for really fit young pilots. I go with that, using oxygen on every flight over 10,000 feet and at night where it increases visual acuity. It is super cheap for the benefits. About go/no-go decisions, my family fully accepts when I say we can't go, and they support that decision. I benefit from some really good training and the knowledge that my plane and mother nature are out to kill me so I have to stack the odds in my favor. It also helps being part of an aviation community where safety is emphasized.

I'm not a pilot but I realize you can't bank a plane beyond a certain angle, especially in high elevations, c'mon sense, keep wings level and monitor speed, if I flew, I would never bank beyond a very slight angle, ever. RIP

Don't be embarrassed to ask for an airport surveillance radar approach. They basically talk you down every step of the way, and in this case it would have made this a piece of cake.😊 it's not just for student pilots. It's for anyone who needs it, and this person did need it. If the glide s**** was the least bit questionable, then that's what he should have asked for. There would have been an inopflag on the glide s**** At the same time, localizer would be usable That would back up the asr approach information.😢

My only criticism is your description of the pilots as capable and experienced. In reality their experience in terms of hours pales in comparison to many pilots. And the crash report clearly points out the kinds of mistakes made by pilots who are not capable and experienced.

This reminded me of a poor decision with weather, friends & flying. Early 90s in college, me & two flight student friends, went to the CAF Airshow in Harlingen, Texas from San Antonio in the school's Piper Arrow, about a 3-hour flight. S.A. & Harlingen weather is clear. The problem was thick fog just south of S.A. to 20 miles north of Harlingen, from ground level to 50-100 feet, visibility in fog less than 1/4 mile! Route is clear, fog forecast to burn off, but if we wait, we can't get into the Harlingen airport since it's closing at 11:00 for the airshow. I had "getthereitis," and left. I think I was at 10,500 ft & it was weird flying over a solid fog layer with _no_ view of the ground for almost 3 hours. I was _very_ nervous & aware that if the engine quit, I would land blind. Approaching Harlingen, the fog ended as forecast, about 20 miles north of the city. We had a wonderful time, but my desire to get somewhere put 3 lives at risk while flying.
