Ever notice that there are certain Gundam series that no one talks about? I recently started watching Gundam X and I'm enjoying it. But in my 3 years of being a Gundam fan, I didn't see anyone talking about it at all. Maybe it has to do with recency bias mixed with only older UC series getting attention.

The 0079 novels are a very interesting thing to look at. It's pure Tomino without any sponsor or network restrictions and compromises. So we get a very clear idea of what he was interested in. Much more focus on the sci-fi elements and much less on the interpersonal interactions. Almost no melodrama. Much more mature in the sex and violence. An almost obsession with the Newtype concept. Though the novels are definitely for seasoned Gundam fans who have already watched 0079. I would absolutely not suggest it as an entry point into the franchise. This is perfectly exemplified by the first book unceremoniously revealing Char and Sayla's backstory in narration in the first few chapters. You already knew that twist from the anime and the book expects you to.

The Calibarn is currently my 2nd favourite design, it takes the NT-D system , the Pale rider system, a little tallgease and mashed them all together to give as much pilot stress as possible. Also to add a little spice gave it a gun that is in theory be it's own bullet. My only complain is that it only used ariels shield bits and not the schwarzette's guardian for the unicorn Phsycho frame burst moment

The changes the manga makes to the story are such a huge improvement.

Burning has a way better death, Kelly has a mecha beaver tail, Gato is having some more emotions and finally we get a full armor GP0 1 and a Big Zam with Federation engineering.......WHOOO HOOO!

That full armor GPO1 is really stupid. The added gear on the back would restrict its back vernier thruster pods and restrict its agility. Only interesting thing about it is the beam saber manipulator arms.

The changes here are probably some of the best, turning what was a silly sidequest in the OVA into a massive source of drama going forward.
