Using hard pastel sticks and sandpaper to create a powder that, when applied over charcoal, produces a shimmering effect is a fascinating artistic technique. Begin by grinding the pastel sticks against fine-grit sandpaper, collecting the pastel powder that results. Applying this mix over a smooth layer of charcoal powder with a soft brush allows the shimmer to catch light from different angles,...

How are the sharpeners holding up for charcoal? I just lost an entirely new pencil as the tip kept breaking RIP
X-Acto actually owns the Boston Bruin now and they do still make the ks version of that pencil sharpener which is the one that is mounted with screws. They do have a modern vacuum pencil sharpener but it only has one cutter blade. The cutter blade assembly is still metal but the rest of the pencil sharpener is plastic. Play KS model that screws into the wall of a desk still has double cutters.
What adhesive tape are you using to mount the drawing down?
Si dice àrsh 🤭
Like your art philosophy, art is personal, do,what you want. Amazing talent to pull something out of a spontaneous blob of powder, i need a reference to start with at least.😊
@@elflordsjourneys Thanks so much:)
Been changing charcoal papers and appreciate the advice. As well as oil pastel work. New at it pretty much so I'm experimenting with shading, and bow papers as well as trying powdered and stick charcoal and such
will you just continue over it or use fixative inbetween to ensure the "unterpainting" stays the way it is.
Moar video PLSSSSS
I was hoping I would see you again, I find your technique quite interesting. Thanks for sharing.
@@jamesduncan578 Thanks so much!
Your artwork is literally so awesome.
hello are you working on a project in one session or do you make pauses? If you make pauses how do you store your charcoal for it not to be erased by draft and wind, are you using workable fixatif between sessions?
Hi, this is the first session, I am making shapes and values that I find interesting. In the video you will see me blowing off the excess charcoal from the paper, this way I don’t have to worry about the charcoal moving. I don’t use fixatives until the very end. I will be doing an update video this week on what I saw in the abstract. I love that we all see something different:)
@@ericmessinger1361 thank you very much for the great content.
Well, that was interesting, in the early part I could see a birds head, then more toward the end I could see a small dags head, then you couldn't leave it alone and I lost any vision of a shape and the video ended. I would like to see what you finally came to see in it.
Hi, at this point in the process I am looking for pleasing shapes and value ranges that are pleasing to eye. It can a week or so before I settle on an initial shape I see something in. I never go with the first thing I see:)
I am certain there was a goblin in the right hand corner......peeking.
@@triciab8751 hahaha probably was🤣😂
I use KUM metal sharpeners - a long point for pencils and 2mm for mech. It is cheap and leave super sharp point. I have not used charcoal
Question, if you can please. The small black hand sharpener, on the bottom of your video, with the two ports, I would like to try. What is the name of it? Thank you - Joseph
Hello Eric, I became inspired by your art to try this and immediately ran into a problem. I see how easily you can use a brush and instantly pull up charcoal to create lighter value. I payed charcoal powder down and when using a brush it doesn’t pull out much. I can’t seem to create any rich darks and lights with a brush. An eraser works somewhat but nothing like what you’re doing. I’m sure you’ve come across this at some -lint and was wondering if you could point me in the direction of what the problem might be
Hi, Thanks for the question. The powder charcoal will only get you a value range from about 30-70 percent. You will need a kneaded eraser and charcoal pencils to get you to the finish line. I use hot press paper as well. The finders of a hot press paper are tighter and allow the charcoal to sit on top of the paper. Please let me know if this helps at all/)
Beautifull piece
Hey Eric. If you were new drawing, where the hell do you start?
IT would be interesting to see a new drawing from start to finish.
Embossing powder does amazing things for line work. I have also used it like the commenter above to create filled in quasi ‘bumped up’ sections of the image. You can also put it on top of your piece when you finish if you are worried about changing your charcoal values. I just want to give you a small warning though: embossing powder comes off pretty easily if you don’t heat set the embossed image. It’s designed for you to be able to brush off the extra after the heat set so it can be finicky. You are melting it like using one of the acrylic mediums that have grit in them. It’s awesome stuff for effects but doesn’t bind well without the heat. The pigment powder can be used exactly like your charcoal. I was in a guild at Binders in Atlanta and they would let reps talk to us at meetings so I got the great demos for just my guild fee. It was awesome. Have fun playing! 😊 PS: I subscribed! 😊
Thanks so much for the feedback! I am finding I like the effects the pigment powder gives more than the embossing powder. I will expeerment more with the Embossing powder.
I TURNED UP my video quality to be able to see glitter BUT somehow i don't think we are getting the full effect unfortunately
See if can kick it up to 1080. I am going to create another video to see if I can get a better example, the effect is subtle but in person is really effective.
@@ericmessinger1361 YES, I KICKED IT UP TO 1080, that was as high as i could go ..on some videos u can go up to 4k...i assume how high u can go is to do with the quality of the upload???
Embossing powder can be melt down with a heat gun. It probably will be sort of a fixate. Greeting card creator occasionally use it as a dam for the watercolor flow. I expected to see you working with ridged from the embossing.
That is so interesting. I will look into that:)
Nice , thank you .
The color really made the character really pop. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting combination of mediums.
Thanks. The end result is beautiful.
plz make a video on charcoal art for beginners like me and others ...so far i have only seen portraits and most of the approach is very messy .. so a good video on a simple object or scene would do great ..any way thanks for having me as a subscriber
I will do that:)
Love your work!
Love the art! ❤ so glad youtube recommended this to me
Thank you so much for watching.
It didn't even register as an insignificant element in the video. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Bad hair day? Never mind.
Panpastel can be lifted with garden variety Faber-Castell eraser at least from the FABRIANO® Tiziano pastell paper. I checked other brands in my collection with mixed results from not at all to slightly. Sadly I couldn't find my Faber-Castell eraser pen, but both the white in a slide-out plastic sleeve and both sides from the blue and red school eraser worked splendidly.
yeah, me too broo
I think derwent make coloured charcoal and graphite. Thank you for sharing your experiment, your painting turned out very cool. Cheers!
I’ve been using pan pastel for a few years. A kneaded eraser will lift panpastel.
I was wondering that, since I saw people using black pan pastel basically as a replacement to charcoal or as first layer before using compressed charcoal. How much does it lift? As much as it would vine/willow charcoal, or less?
i am not sure if its just me but from minute 9:15 on its just a black image without sound.
Same 😟
It's not just you.
The video was supposed to be trimmed at 9:15. Sorry. I will se if I can update it.
Thanks so much. I am saving out a new video now:)
@@ericmessinger1361 no problem. just thought i might miss more content out :)
I'm learning a lot from your generous sharing of your techniques. One question: Is there a reason that you only post 720p resolution on your channel? Given how much detail your work has in the charcoal, I'm constantly wishing for some 4K! Thanks.
I post in 1920x1080. Not sure why you can only see a low resolution version🧐
@@ericmessinger1361 Thanks for the reply. For some reason it's now 1080HD, so all is good. Thanks again.
Great, THANKS!
You are a delight! I appreciate the honesty in your approach and your real-time talk and problem-solving. Keep em coming!
Thanks:)
love it 😀
This is really cool!!, is that on pastel paper?
No. I use several paper but they’re all a hot press watercolor paper. I like cold press as well but for a smoother finish the hot press usually works best:)
Maybe it behaves more like watercolour? Try and wet the charcoal paint on the paper and see if you can lift off the charcoal with a clean wet brush and a piece of kitchen paper. But that technique may not give you the same thin light lines as the kneaded eraser will.
A mr. Clean eraser ( like for your kitchen ) will pretty much remove pastels, use it dry. Love this video.
I will try that:)
Didn't even notice the hair. Now I gotta go back & check 😁
Funny:)
Hi what paper do you like to do charcoal drawing on and also ,do you use a fixitive at the conclusion of the artwork ?
You actually don't realise the manufacturers of pencils and graphite products MUST work to specifications. You're being very disrespectful to them AND your future products. You requested graduations but now you're ignoring them. You're NOT ALLOWED to use a 2B pencil, lightly. Cause YOU REQUESTED MANUFACTURING SPECIFICATIONS. The manufacturers did what you requested. Now you're just throwing all that in the trash and doing whatever you feel like. Which is laying down a minus value layer of material. That minus value layer doesn't survive for a long time after you're life is over. Your lead has a radius measurement. You're using the middle value of the diameter of that value lead. The manufacturers specify the amount of material you MUST LAY DOWN ON THE SURFACE to obtain the specifications. Your light layers are actually -90 setting. You paid for the manufacturer to build you something that puts down a thick layer that lasts for many centuries but you put down a minus 90% layer of thickness. You didn't lay down a surface to conserve over time. You can see marks on the paper but that's not a layer of material. You MUST STOP yourself, cause the manufacturer IS DOING THE WORK, not YOU. You smear the paper with a thick layer of material and the material will eventually show the manufacturers did their job in mixing the material in the pencil, to exact specifications. The 2B pencil will only show its true colour when you put down a THICK EVEN LAYER of the material. You're not allowed to skimp on the material in the pencil. You're not allowed to vary your pressure when laying down the material. You must put down a layer thickness that matches the manufacturers specifications. Only then will you see the HB or 2H values appear. You're working below the minimum layer thickness for the pencil medium material. You must apologise for your videos and correct your wrong knowledge and learn to put down a greater amount of material onto the paper so it can be fully seen and be conserved at a later date.
Did we watch the same video? As an artist that also works with graphite and charcoal pencils, I am FAR more interested in seeing actual applications and process on an art piece than seeing someone just draw sheets full of little filled squares of gradiations of a pencil, that tells me very little to be honest. We all use our tools in different ways, and sometimes (often) it has absolutely ZERO to do with "exact manufacturer specifications". If that's how you enjoy using the implements, being technical and "Exact" as you put it, good for you, as long as you are enjoying it and it is allowing you to achieve the desired result, then it is the right tool for you. To say that someone is "not allowed" to do something with a pencil, or brush, or whatever drawing or painting tool, and asking them to apologize to the manufacturers and "correct your wrong knowledge" is a bit of a nonsensical approach, and pretty much the only disrespectful thing I've seen here. If the content was not what you were looking for, good, move on, it wasn't meant for you.
I am not sure what that rant is all about😂😂😂😂😂 people seem to have allot of time on there hands.
Each, as specified pencil has a value range that it works best for.
Just when you think you've seen it all, new levels of mental illness appear in front of you. I find it hard to believe you are a real human being with the way you talk.
You didn't actually review the pencil. You drew with the pencil and chatted. You didn't do a final summary either. So I can't give you a thumbs up or down.
Thanks for your vids! Just curious though, i thought that Generals doesnt make the ex hard pencil anymore. I dont even find them in the store. Any knowledge about that?
I hope that is not true:) I bought several boxes a while back and have not looked lately, you are right, I can not find them:(
Yeah the only place i can find them is on the generals website for 24 for 6 pencils
What do you use to seal your charcoal drawings?
I always enjoy watching someone's process of starting a drawing because it is something I continuously struggle with and is what 99% of the time ends up pushing me away from drawing and I run back to watching UA-cam videos about it while doodling...lol. Anywho, what makes you decide to use charcoal powder vs. graphite powder?
I like how dark you can get charcoal without the gloss that graphite has.
Very cool technique, Eric!
Amazing drawing !!😮✨thank you for sharing
And do you spray your work?
