How I Mix Drums

A few people have asked how I mix drums, so I figured I would show some of the basics of how I do it. I did more than what I showed here, but this should at least give a decent starting point. I included one of the "little tricks" I used this time around too. If you have any questions about the details, just let me know in the comments. You've convinced me to invest in the Marshall JCM 800 2203x.
Yea I love it. Ill never sell it.
💞Wow💛💛💛💛💛💛💚💚
How the dv77/v30 work well in a cab ? I have one cab with dv77 and the other v30 but not the combo in one cab , worth ?
It works fine for me. Ive never had a problem with 2 different speakers in a cabinet.
@@aheadofmetal Thx!
i prefer the mesa
Mesa is hard to beat.
i prefer the Greenbacks over the V30 i currently have a mesa dual rectifier solo head, 3 channels, and a mesa clone cab 2x12 with 2 Celestions CREAMBACK W each one. very satisfied with it, but i want more crunch, and but i also want to keep the tightness.
Sad how far they.have fallin
When it says loop on, is there a patchcable plugged in then?
No, mine isnt modded so the loop is selectable. When its on it activates the master volume
only thing i would change is making the cymbal a bit louder especially the crashes and ride. Could barely hear them. Other than that i think it sounds great
Can you try to replicate the tone on the album chainsaw dismemberment by mortician
Yea definitely. That sounds like a job for the VHD preamp....love that album.
@@aheadofmetal the tone is great it’s distorted but smooth at the same time
@@truemenentoflife1721 yea, i think the bass tone has a lot to do with it too
@@aheadofmetal in the beginning of the song fleshripper you can hear the guitar when the bass isn’t playing and the tone is still heavy. I think it’s because he used acoustic strings on the guitar and the low g standard tuning
@@aheadofmetal I think he used acoustic strings
Quad Tracked 800+VHD seems to have the roundness and the attack at the same time to make it cut through. However I would try to have a different speaker set since they all sound very similar.
Yea for sure. Honestly, im always surprised how similar amps actually sound when everything else in the signal chain stays the same...
🤘😈🤘🔥🔥🔥
Greenvacks always have more presence and clarity. I have no idea why v30s are so popular. I have an orange 212 with them. I don’t know why.
Yea I won't lie Im debating taking my v30s out for a while...
I really wish you'd done a quick comparison of the whole mix like you did at the end with the guitars solo'd, but I appreciate the video regardless
Good point. I started doing that on the newer videos
Tone seems too bassy (round in general) and overdriven. But close, very close. ;)
Had to jump on my phone real quick to say thanks for the upload. This video is pretty informative for me and useful. I subbed to show support!!! Also, I heard good things about the SNK pedal, and I decided on getting one. And now I definitely gotta buy a Metal Zone pedal again! (I sold mine many moons ago) I really need a better metal tone. I want to take my tone and channel to the next level! Ha ha \m/_<[ ]>___\m/ Rock on!
Thanks dude! The SNK is pretty cool
The Mesa. But I'm biased - the rectos just sound so awesome.
Are you a red or orange channel guy?
Petes hands are feet are twice as fast….. he plays a double on RAPTURE!!!!! 😄😄😄😄😄 computer drums cannot even keep up 😂❤️❤️❤️❤️
Gotta admit - How it sounds alone VS in a mix is a huge difference. Alone, the greenback is far more full, V30 lacks tonal range. In the mix though... the sharper bite of the V30 cuts through better to my ear! More dynamic with a quicker attack - it sits in the mix better, with the greenback feeling a bit flat. It may sound better on its own, but nothing is on its own in a mix - each element has to command the space it sits in, and what seem like shortcomings of the V30 are exactly what allow it to own the place it fits into.
Bingo! One of the biggest revelations to me over the past year is just how much listening to guitar tones in solo is pointless. I always choose the darker and fuller speaker in solo. But I am consistantly surprised at how little low end you actually need/want from guitars in a full mix.
I am gravitating towards the Joyo EQ + Boss GE-7 combo. The ProCo Rat while having a bit more reverb it seems, I also like this sound too for different reasons.
Yea man. Eqs are nice and punchy and the rat is extra warm and sits back a bit
luv it. thank you!
No prob dude thanks for checkin it out!
finally i could hear what a Greenback was about! And I love it a lot.. Both, blended, are a killer joint!
Yea man, Greenback is cool. Lots of 8k slice.
Did you use a boost?
No, just eq pedal cutting some low end.
@@aheadofmetal Thanks.

@@christopherdavis8248what tune?
@@aheadofmetal Melechesh cover of Babylon Fell using the JCM 800 2203X using Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive + Joyo EQ
@@christopherdavis8248 ha ha that IS a sweet version (had to search it). The SD1 + Joyo combo could definitely pull that off
I'm using almost the same settings with my JCM800, and the ST9Pro+ is my favorite boost for it :D I can also recommend the MXR Custom Badass Modified Overdrive
I heard the cbmo is legit. I've never tried it.
I'm not sure you nailed it. It's a great tone, but I think it lacks those fizzing highs and some more scooping. That being said it's a great tone in itself. Also I've just watched your video on recreating Morbid Angel tone and I literally did not understand that it was your sound, I thought you were playing the record. Only when I focused on drums I realized it was you, so in my mind you completelly nailed that one :D
Yea i think you're right actually. The 800 is a bit "thuddy" In a way - especially unmodded. I tried this one with, and without the evo hot mod and the unmodded was a little closer than the others. Either way I think the solid state randall cut is hard to bring out fully with an old Marshall
@@aheadofmetal I don't have much care for solid state vs tube, I just listen to the sound. I love this sound. It would sound great on an album. It's just that I felt it didn't match Pantera's - at least not after hearing how you matched Morbid Angel. And also it was a matter of moment. These things are to at least some extent subjective. Cheers :D
0:26 that's all you need! Tight sound, chug and clear, without fuzz, and low freq. That's i'm love
Thanks dude. I think that was the EQ. That is my favorite also (mainly because it doesnt kill the lowend and feels the best to play)
@@aheadofmetal yeah, dude. You're right, it's EQ. If you set it up correctly, it will sound great and you'll be cool
@@sounddamageofficial agreed. I think its actually more versatile than drive pedals personally.
All the pedals are connected to the input jack socket? And all to the clean amp?
Yup all pedals are straight into the high input jack. The Marshall is stock.
Beautiful..u should try it with a chug pedal
I've heard the chug pedals are cool. Ola brings it.
Nice shootout! Can never go wrong with the classics... Classic amp, classic boost (SD-1). I have the Waza version which IMO gives it a little more low end oomph that often gets lost when boosting but the regular SD-1 is also a perfect match for a Marshall. I also get great results from the Keeley Red Dirt (Germanium) on my Marshalls, especially with guitars that have higher output pickups.
Thanks! I havent tried the Red Dirt, but I think Andy Timmons likes it and if its good enough for him, it is probably good enough for anyone :) Agree on the SD-1. Haven't tried the waza version yet, but I'm sure it is really good.
@@aheadofmetal Right on! I didn't know Andy used the Red Dirt... Petrucci definitely does/did. Like most of us I've got a dozen or so overdrives/Tube screamers but those are the two I really like with my Marshalls. They work well with the modern 5150's too (those and the Maxon OD808).
Great video, when people focusing on learning they'll realise all you need is an sd-1
The market for overdrive pedals is way overhyped. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between any in a full mix tbh
With a $30 sd-1 and a $20 fish-n-chips eq, you could easily emulate every overdrive pedal out there.
All great, but I'm partial to the SD-1 and RAT2. The maxon is a cool option, for sure!
Thanks dude! I think all are good options honestly. SD-1 always brings that nice half-clip midrange chonk.
Sd1 that's all you need!!
Sd-1 is a classic for a reason. It just does "that sound" with a Marshall
800. All sound awesome but the 800 is just too much of a timeless classic, even the 2203X version. I want one bad.
For my money, it is the best. I've owned lots of amps over the years but marshalls just do it for me. 800 especially.
eQ, MT2 & RAT.
MT2 kicked major ass here too. I'm a bigger fan of hard clip pedals than overdrives tbh.
@@aheadofmetal <3
the rat for sure! nice FF riffing
I love how much love the rat pedal is getting for this one; I really dig the low end.
@@aheadofmetal if you put the FILTER at 12 o clock on the RAT, Bass and Treble at 4-5, Mid at 7 and presence at maybe 5-6, you've got Morbid Angel tone right there, when the 800 was the main amp. Still the same settings on the JCM 900 on channel 1, but the extra diode in the preamp there makes it a bit fuzzier sounding.
@@AlexRamosDrTaz check out my video on the morbid angel tone :) It got pretty close, probably would have nailed it without the extra mids in there
Crushing!! Awesome work.
Thanks dude!
rat
Rat pedal has extra nice low end
METAL ZONE FTW!!!
Yea dude. Metalzone w a little lowend boost crushes bigtime
2 eq/boost combo does it for me
Me too bro. Greatest boost ever is eq imho
This is a great tone for people that like drums.
Interesting. How so?
@@aheadofmetal the mid hump on this speaker sits lower so it gives the drums more room in the 3k-4k hz area.
@@taylolz agreed, 100%
The mesa and 800 were my favourite. sounds amazing dude. what cabs did you use?
Thanks dude. For Cabinets, I used a mesa 2x12 and avatar 2x12. All speakers mic's and blended at the same volume.
this is not a music !!!!!! this is shit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hard to compete with the mesa with those low tunings
Yea, mesa is pretty refined in that register
Mesa is the keeper IMO. Sounds so focused, and mean. It's also a lot tighter than the Marshall's, although the 800 comes extremely close. The 2000 is cool but too squishy and loose.
Its funny because I am redoing these this morning to try to get them closer.... blows my mind how much the presence knob on the mesa changes the tone wildly
Because of this video, now I want to buy a JCM2000 DSL 100 lol!
Want this one? It was recently serviced :)
All 3 sound so good and have their distinct character
It is true. I am always surprised how the jcmw2000 holds up
Are you close mic-ing these? They all sound great. I'm a bit of a JCM 2000 fanboy though... man that thing sounds killer, though, you're making all three of these amps scream; they all sound killer
Yea the mics were about an inch off off the grillcloth. All sure sm58's. And Thanks! I agree the JCM 2000 holds up surprisingly well.
Don't sell that Tremoverb!
I dunno man, might be time to change things up!
@@aheadofmetal What amps are you considering? I think many players would kill for the metal tones you got out of the Mesa.
@@matt-evansI'm not sure. A 4x12 cab seems like a good idea, but as far as heads go, I don't know...
@@aheadofmetalYou're getting good tones out of that Recto 2x12. I struggled with the one I had. Mesa 4x12s sound darker with the 8 ohm speakers, as you may already be familiar. I'd vote for Peavey 5150 and Marshall 4x12!
@@matt-evans that is something I didnt think about...the 8 ohm vs 16 ohm thing. Im wondering if I got a mesa 4x12 and just put all 16 ohm speakers in it.
