The Album After: Spin Doctors - Turn It Upside Down
That was a fun live chat! When it comes to this album, l recall liking it, but I haven’t heard it since it came out. With it being locked away in storage, I’ll have to find it on UA-cam, or steal your copy. Bwhahahahahahahaha! I’m digging this series and the Lizzy one as well. Keep up the great work, MusicNut. Your pal and mine, The Bassy, Racey, Spacey, Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.
With the exception of the Nightwish debut, the Lizzy debut is my least favorite initial LP of any of my 20 all time favorite bands, below Rocka Rolla,April Wine,Nazareth..When I relistened to all their albums about a decade ago,I really appreciated Brian Robertson even more,Gorum as well..Before and after were spotty for me.
Thanks Eric! Yes when Brian and Scotty joined, they really found their sound. As for your before and after comment, well you MAY see this here. Looking forward to hearing your views on the albums. Cheers!
@@JohntheMusicNut The early stuff seems to need an editor or cohesive focus,idk..Spotty might've been harsh on the later albums,Black Rose and Thunder & Lightening are really strong.
It's an ok album, it's not one that I play often but I like it a lot more than shades of a blue orphanage. Great show John
Thank you Ashley! An acquired taste for sure but I am such a sucker for these interesting debut albums where they try to find their sound.Looking forward to hearing your opinions. Cheers!
John this is Excellent! Can't wait for each one of these albums to be broken down.Keep it up!
You're welcome and thank you Dan! I can't wait to hear your opinions!
I haven’t listened to really anything all September and have been trying to play catch up. This was the first piece of new music I listened to going into October. 11, wow. It starts off with a banger, and the second song, Blues Before and After is even better. I really loved that one. Blue Period had a nice slow flow to it and the next song Baby Be Good had an upbeat Vibe to it . I really loved Room without a View. It had a nice driving bass line hidden in it. But it felt more like it should have been an album closer? Maybe it’s just me. Yesterday’s Girl and Cut Flowers flow really well, both very upbeat musically. William Wilson was also another upbeat tune. These three songs really just have that vibe of putting you in a good mood. Maria Elena, feels more generic to me. There is more going on it but it feels less somehow. But it still flows nice. Kiss Away your Tears is fantastic but I wish I the album was longer? I really loved this album. It flowed nice and it had a really nice upbeat vibe despite some dark lyrics. So far I think this is my favorite album of theirs, I just wish it was longer. I felt empty when it ended.
Thin Lizzy Thursday 😎💪🎼🎸🎸.. funny thing a lot of people didn't know that Phil play guitar first then learn the bass ...his early stuff is very experimental..blush rock...😎👍
Hey Ernesto! Yes, that's true! Blush rock? Hmmmm I never heard that but it makes sense. Phil's heart is really on his sleeve on these early releases. Cheers! 🎸🎸😎🥁💯
Johnny the Fox! 🦊 Whaddup, Dawg?! 🐶 I concur, sir! The Metallica version of “Whiskey in the Jar” PALES in comparison to the Lizzy version. I never really warmed to the first trio of Thin Lizzy albums. (Except for the two big hits, of course.) l must give them another chance. I’m much more familiar with everything from Night Life to the end of their reign and rule. I think I’m looking forward to this series even more than your Smithereens one, if that’s possible. Cheers from The Big Apple. 🍎 Rock Out, Prog On and Pogo! It’s my mantra 🕉️ and my logo. At the end of each & every video. Your clone and mine, The Caffeinated, Antiquated, Animated Doppelgänger of Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.
Hey Davey! Sorry so late to respond but I was hanging with Jimmy the Weed! I can see that. The first three (particularly the first two) only show remnants of their classic sound that would follow. I am happy to hear that you dig Thin Lizzy. I am looking forward to hearing your views on their strong catalog! - The Fan of Stone Cold who is allergic to mold and loves the song "Fools Gold" that is John the MusicNut!
Great show John. I love Lizzy, one of my favourite bands ever. I have to say the debut is one of my least favourites, but a decent LP nonetheless. Really looking forward to later episodes.
Thank you Parish! Yeah, I figured this band was in your wheelhouse! I can see that view on this one. I am looking forward to hearing your views on the catalog. Cheers!
Hi John...this is great ! Thank you for doing this. I have become a big Thin Lizzy fan over the last few years. I have all of the albums from JailBreak on plus the live albums . So these first few I am not familiar with. Still looking to pick them up. I also like those albums where bands are finding their sound. I will have to look for this version that includes the EP. I still need to pick up that book also. Thank you John. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Chez
Hey Chez! You're welcome and thank you! Great to hear that you're a fan. Yes, the first few are really interesting records. I bought my version of this on Amazon and it's still available as Thin Lizzy Remastered and Expanded. I am looking forward to hearing your opinions on the catalog. Cheers!
If I have to name my favorite band, I would say Thin Lizzy. I have Martin other Thin Lizzy books, From Dublin to Jailbreak and The Sun Goes Down. This is a good album but not great. Better than the second album.
Thanks Byron! You know I should have figured that you dig them from our favorite songs by year shows on the Warehaus! I have to pick up those other Thin Lizzy books that Martin has penned. I am looking forward to hearing your opinions on the catalog. Cheers!
@@JohntheMusicNut This Is The One was among my top 10 of 83 ..Many of their best early tracks were non album singles. Black Boys On The Corner,Whiskey In The Jar,etc.
Totally agree Eric. Black Boys on the Corner smokes!
My 13th favorite band.Honestly the 1975-78 period to me was so much stronger than the first 4 and last 4 releases it almost seems unfair to compare them.Phil seems unfocused on the early LPs..I mentioned Nightwish,Priest,April Wine having debuts I wasn't fond of,same with Lizzy and I didn't like the first CCR album, which many love.
@@ericrobertson2024 You know they may rank around #10 for me. Your comment reminds me that this is going to be a fun exercise. One thing I think we can all agree on is there isn't a real dud in this catalog. I am with you on the first CCR although it's been awhile since I heard it.
My #1 song of 1991: PRIMAL SCREAM by Motley Crue! (We do not have Aldi's)
That tune rocks Mike! Cheers!
This eluded me. Had the pedigree though with the producer--I was a Screaming Trees guy- so I’ll track it down!
Hey Nick! Yeah, this is definitely worth it if you like what came before. Ooh, Screaming Trees? We have to talk! Cheers!
Didn’t give this album much of a listen when it originally came out but your series inspired me to give it another spin. I was pleasantly surprised how good the songs are. Another great show.
Thanks so much @bsrg550! I am happy that you gave this another spin and appreciate it more now. Cheers!
Hi, John! Thanks for the nice shoutout, man. That was cool and unexpected. It’s been quite awhile since I heard this Smithereens album. I really don’t recall any songs from it, but l do remember enjoying it and giving it some airplay at the record shoppe at the time. Not sure if l got a promo CD, bought it new, or waited for a used copy to get traded into the place l worked at. Who knows, l may have picked it up at our sister store where l occasionally worked. Whatever the case may be, l guess this album never hit me like the previous five did. I have to go back and check it out again. I’m still quite chuffed that you’re furrowing your own path on UA-cam, with different content than most of the usual subjects. Looking forward to future episodes in this marvelous series. Cheers from The Big Apple! ~ Davey Cretin from Cretin Classics.
Hi Davey! Oh absolutely! Happy to do it. Yes, I am noticing a trend that this album didn't leave a strong first impression when it was released. Thanks Davey, I appreciate that a lot! I will have three more coming after this one. Cheers!
Hi John… great stuff ! I missed out on this one back in day. I’ll definitely be looking for it in the wild. Thank you John. Chez
Hi Chez! You're welcome and thank you! Yes, this is definitely worth seeking out if you're a fan of the albums before this. Cheers!
I had this album at one time. I don’t think I kept it. In fact, I can’t recall any song from it off the top of my head! I think the tone of this album threw me and I never warmed up to it. Maybe I should revisit it and see how it hits me in 2024. Nice job, John!
Thank you, DC! Yeah, it didn't do much for me at first but repeated listens and hearing them do a few of these songs live in 2016 gave me a better appreciation for it. Cheers!
I don’t even know what I have that was released in 91. Overkill Horrorscope and Skid Row Slave to the Grind. Now 1990, 1990 is a magical year!
1990 is a magical year! I will bang that out down the road.
Ozzy Osbourne no more tears, Metallica Metallica, guns n roses use your illusion 1 & 2, red hot Chili peppers blood sugar sex magic, nirvana nevermind, Pearl jam ten, soundgarden badmotorfinger, Mr big lean into it, van halen f u c k, u2 achtung baby.
Great list Ian! Oh that Red Hot Chili Peppers' album is a killer! Cheers!
@@JohntheMusicNut thanks John, a great album it is.
👍💯
I still need 2 Thin Lizzy box sets: the debut and the new one. Otherwise my collection is COMPLETE.
Wow Mike! Respect!
Love some Thin Lizzy on any day 👍
Thin Lizzy! Psyched!! Rock on!!! 🤘🏼
Looking forward to some thin Lizzy 😎🔥🎸🎸
Haha I'll bet you are Ernesto! ❤🔥🎸🎸😎
Such a great selection of songs that ive never hear..but u got me interested 😄👍👋😎🎼
Cool! I love to hear that Ernesto!
John , i like how u explain the album and the band .at your own speed 😎👋👍🎼🔊🔊🔊🔊..
Thank you Ernesto! Yeah, no need to rush through it.
Great show John. 96 is a surprisingly good year for music. Here’s my top 10 10. Z Z Top - Black Fly 9. Terrorvision - Perseverance 8. John Mellencamp - Just Another Day 7. Suede - Beautiful Ones 6. Ash - Girl From Mars 5. Jimmy Barnes - Lover Lover 4. Ocean Colour Scene - The Day We Caught The Train 3. Matchbox 20 - Real World 2. Manic Street Preachers - A Design For Life 1. Bryan Adams - The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me
Thanks Parish! You have some great ones here! I really have to check out Manic Street Preachers. I hear so many great things about them. Cheers!
Killer Accept tee
Thanks! And would later make an appearance when Davey and JC saw them in Stroudsburg!
Good stuff John👍
Thanks Peter! 👍
1. Metal Church - Human Factor / 2. Overkill - Horrorscope / 3. Nazareth - No Jive / 4. Death - Human / 5. GNR - Use Your Illusion 2/ 6. Metallica - that one that sold a bunch lol / 7. Quarterflash - Girl In The Wind / 8. C.O.C. - Blind / 9. Joe Walsh - Ordinary Average Guy / 10. Anthrax - Attack Of Killer B's.///
Great list Eric! I only picked up Human Factor last year and that album is so so good. Yeah, the Metallica self-titled is very good and the highs on that are so high. I still have the cassette of Ordinary Average Guy. Still dig the title track and Look at Us Now off that one. Cheers!
@@JohntheMusicNut Metal Church was an obvious choice for me.Perhaps the only band whose initial 4 albums don't contain a single dud or track I ever skip, even more remarkable considering both the original vocalist and main guitarist/songwriter left during that span..The other choices were kinda random. I left out C.O.C. - Blind, another band with multiple line up changes,,but I just edited them in..Both 90's Walsh albums have some decent tunes..The tracks radio + MTV didn't play from Black album were what I liked.
Pretty good release. I would rank it somewhere in the middle of their catalogue. Haven’t listened to it in a long time. Thanks for the review, John.
You're welcome and thank you DC!
Hi John…this one got no play around here that I can remember. Miles from No Where is great. I agree some gems on the second half of the album. Love this series ! Thank you John . Chez
You're welcome and thank you Chez! I am happy that you are enjoying the series! Cheers! John
Congratulations on the new logo, l love it! I really dig this Smithereens album quite a bit. I used to play it at the infamous Titus Oaks CD and Record Exchange all the time! I am fairly certain that l heard “Miles from Nowhere” on Noo Yawk rock radio in 1994. We disagree on a couple of songs here, my friend. My four faves are the aforementioned “Miles from Nowhere,” “Afternoon Tea,” “Gotti” and “Sick of Seattle.” “Gotti” friggin’ RULES! The song, that is. I love the lyrics on “Sick of Seattle” and see the humor in it. Unlike the critics. Those Jackanapes from Jackaloop Junction!! I like the fact that this album has a totally different vibe than the rest of their oeuvre. It’s all about the RAWK! For the most part. I also find “Afternoon Tea” 🫖 to be charming as well. Oh well, we can’t all like the same things. It’s Eve’s fault… she ate the apple! 🍎 Bwhahahahahahaha! 🤪 Cheers 🍻 from Noo Yawk, ova heyah. Rock Out, Prog On and Pogo, yo! Sidewinder sleeps tonight
I believe this is from 1992 but I still dig it. Cheers!
@@JohntheMusicNut Cheers!
Was hoping The Nut would have done the macarena dance while giving it his number 1 song of 96😂
Don't give me any ideas! 😄
Hi John..yes Stone Temple Pilots ! Great song and yes Mississippi from Kings X !! One of my favs by them. For me the two new songs Van Halen did for the Best Of , Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More , ZZ Top Whats Up With That, Rush Test For Echo, Driven, Tool Stinkfist and 46 & 2, Def Leppard All I want Is Everything and Tonic Casual Affair to name a few. Great video John ! Thank you .Chez
Hi Chez. You have a lot of great choices here! Oh I so love Rhythmeen! That's a killer ZZ Top album! Driven was another one I was thinking of for an honorable mention and the first time I saw Rush live was on that tour. Me Wise Magic kills! You're welcome and thank you! Cheers!
Tonic? Soundy! I like a few of your honorable mentions better than one specific main pick. But, l won’t spoil it here. 😉 May l ask why you went from 1991 to 1996? My OCD mind can’t handle - nor comprehend - this non-linear approach. Just curious, George. 🙊 ~ Your pal and mine, The Sensational Shape Shifting Superstar that is Davey Cretin, from Cretin Classics.
Hey! I am just doing them as I feel. Next one maybe 2001 or 2014 or 1964. - The Funky Headhunter that is not from Oaktown that is John the Music Nut!
Big fan of “The Mountains Win Again” from their previous platter, Mr. MusicNut. I heard all of their albums through the 80s and 90 from all my various record store gigs. BT are pretty cool - except to PP on SoT!!! - although l prefer Phish. I saw the Phishies on their Rift tour. Awesome friggin’ show! Around the same time, l think, I saw a H.O.R.D.E. tour show. I remember Big Head Todd and the Monsters on the bill, along with Blues Traveler. Did l see that show because of a hot little number at a musical promotional marketing company at the time? You bet your bippy, baby! Ahhh, 😌 the halcyon of yore… By the way, I love the different slant that you put on your channel. It’s quite unique, since you’re doing a lot of stuff from the 1990s. Very cool, keep up the stellar work! Cheers from The Big Apple. Rock Out, Prog On & Pogo! It’s my mantra 🕉️ & my logo. At the end of each & every video. Good review John.... keep them coming 😎🎙️🎼👍👍👍👍👍
I will Ernesto! More to come I assure you.
Hi John…4 got a ton of radio play around here but this album didn’t get nearly the push as 4. I need to check this one out. I have that live album you showed. Fantastic stuff . Thank you John. Love this album after series ! Chez

Great to see A Tribe Called Quest was represented on this list. The Music Nut is always full of surprises.
Thanks @inmyhouse11! Yes, this and their followup, Midnight Marauders, are my go to albums when I want to hear hip hop these days. Cheers!
As soon as you said Ska I knew it would be Fishbone. That album and band changed my life. Shout outs from Australia.
Thanks Peter! Great to hear this. I love all of their albums right up to this one. Cheers from Pennsylvania, United States!
Wow. 1991. I had to go back and look up what all came out and what I knew I was listening to heavily. So, that is going to be my list here. 10. Vagabond Heart-Rod Stewart 9. Innuendo-Queen 8. Use Your Illusion 1 & 2-Guns N Roses 7. Attack of the Killer B's-Anthrax 6. Slave to the Grind-Skid Row 5. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge-Van Halen 4. Lean Into It-Mr. Big 3. 3-D-Wrathchild America 2. No More Tears-Ozzy 1. Decade of Aggression-Slayer I wasn't listening to Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Spin Doctors, Temple of the Dog all that heavily until the following year. But these were the ones that were constantly in the tape deck in my car or my stereo at home.
Thanks JC! Great list! Ya know I was considering Vagabond Heart. That's a very good album. I was also considering Innuendo. Cheers!
Ooft! Not Van Halen! Oh I was so disappointed in that one.
Idk why but I never got into that Carnal album ,upon release or after.. Judgement Day,This Dream Is Over,Top Of The World are ok but it's my least favorite VH album,I like 3 and Diver Down more, and those were disappointing.
Forget about the top ten of 1991 son, I’m in your state, cuz I’m so great, and nothing else can equate! Hi John… thank you for doing this video and thank you for the shoutout ! I need to check out the later day Allman Brothers albums . I’ve never heard that Blues Traveler album. I’m only familiar with 4. Gotta find that one . Some of my favs of 91 : VH/ For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Metallica / Black Album, Skid Row/ Slave To The Grind, U2/Achtung Baby, Ozzy/No More Tears, Aldo Nova/Blood On The Bricks , PJ/Ten and Soundgarden/Bad Motor Finger and GnR/Use Your Illusions 1&2. The Richie Sambora album is fantastic ! That Fishbone album is another I need to check out along with the Armoured Saint . Thank you John. Chez
You're welcome and thank you Chez! Excellent picks here! I believe I have owned all of these at one time except for Aldo Nova and I always heard that's a great record. I strongly considered the Black Album from Metallica since the highs on that are so high. Yes, Reality of My Surroundings in an amazing record and the previous album, Truth and Soul, is a great one as well. Cheers!
Allman Brothers were actually on MTV Unplugged around that time..7 Turns was a terrific song.
