    I remember the stigma attached to anything made in Japan back in the 1950s. Their products, except for traditional wood items, were widely regarded as being trash. Over time the Japs got better. Fast forward a few decades and the Chinese began exporting stuff to our country. The inclination, with we older men at least, is to be very wary about quality. I am of the opinion now that in general Chinese made tools and machines could be to notch but they don't get the quality control and inspections in particular that they need before shipping. In this video we see the mis alignment of the half nut on the drive screw. That should have been caught and fixed at the factory. The trouble is that they leave the retail customer to do their quality control. Not good. If I get a new Little Machine Shop lathe there should be nothing for me to repair or replace. Period... Mind you I am not talking about optional upgrades here.

  • @Varnaj42
    @Varnaj42 2 місяці тому

    I have been watching these videos long enough to realize these lathes are sold by one group of people who then forward the order to another which does the shipping. Except that there might, just might, be some low level of inspection before it leaves the factory it is not likely that any human being actually opens one up and looks carefully at it. The result is that any errors or defects are discovered by the retail purchaser who then, at his own expense, make phone calls to the company who then, still without having actually seen the latlee, sends replacement parts. This is unsatisfactory. I won't do it. I want to buy a little lathe from a company who inspects the product before it is shipped and repairs it. After all I am not on the payrole am I? This is the reason I am more inclined to buy an American made lathe. Cost more? Yeah but it's an ethics thing with me. When a little lathe comes from China it should not be the responsibility of he or she who puts out the money to do the quality controling. I object to that. Lastly are (almost) all those who do these reviews. Do they pay for the lathe or is the company simply sending them one to use? Does anyone reading really think under these circumstances an honest report will be made? Not likely. When I watch a video with some guy in his shop I want to know that he bought the lathe he is reviewing and not that it is on loan for him to do a "aint it nice piece on". Lastly I think you folks should differentiate between mainland China and Taiwan when you say "Chinese made". The Precision Matthews products have a two year warantee. All of the mainland China products have a one year. This is an easy way to telling what the manufacture thinks of his own stuff. The longer the warantee the higher the qualitee. That's a fact that no salesman can successfully argue over. I still enjoy watching these videos... If I were to buy a mini lathe today it would be the PM1220V with a few accessaries. I do like the German designed lathe Proxxon but it comes in a 10 inch. Not big enough. Sherline? Good quality but they keep their prices a secret on the website so they must be afraid of scaring customers. What will I end up buying, seriously? Probably the low end Harbor Freight and then I'll buy the bed extention to push the capacity out to an acceptable margin. Sure... it's a minimal machine but the price is right and they are easy to modify into something acceptable. I do enjoy a challenge. With Harbor Freight you know exactly what you're going to get... no mystery.

    Funny I came across your video today. I purchased a LMS mill couple weeks ago and that had started a series of upgrades and repairs in my shop. I have the exact work bench you got there ( harbor Freight) and I just went through and replaced all 4 drawer slides because they've all failed from the weight of the tooling and usage. Lol. They don't hold much weight that's for sure.

    Do you have information on how to take the looseness slack out of the lead screw knob? I am looking at one these lathes and I know nothing about any of it and I thought this would be a great place to start and learn but I hate the slack in the knobs, my drill press and my cross slide vise also have it and I would love take the play out of those as well. thanks.

      You can adjust the lead screw slack on the LMS machines. My biggest slack was in the bed I was easily able to adjust.

    Appreciate your insight on all this. I’ve been running my own running a construction biz for over a year. I recently got a 30w diode laser and launched an Etsy store. When my schedule is slow with construction I’m cranking out laser products in my shop. I really love running the machine and can see how this “side” hustle could outpace my construction gig with EASE. It’s like having an employee that never needs breaks and can work for 12 hours straight without OT pay 😂. PS I hope you’re monetized by now. The YT income is SLOW in the beginning. It only takes one video to change it all. Keep posting man.

    Great review - thank you! Does the Bolt have any issues cutting through 6mm plywood at one pass and full power? Or does it need more than 1 pass? My main concern in going to this machine is cutting through as much as 1/4 plywood (maple, birch, walnut, cherry, etc.) with no charring.

  • @raystevens687

    You would think the little machine shop would make sure that each lathe would be cleaned before it goes out the door. I'm only saying this because they sell all metal gears to help the cheap lathes that are out there. I myself don't have a metal lathe yet. I do have a mini wood lathe and it has been pretty good lathe for an import.

The RF smaller beam got our attention. We have a super big boy dual laser 80/120 we imported from China ourselves directly that cuts 4’x8’ . We just got our Thunder Bolt last Thursday 10/12 . Waiting on the RotoBoss delivery by UPS today. Question for you: Are you going to sell the cut files for the cozy jig and RotoBoss Large Tumbler-adaptor For the Bolt Laser ? Hello. I have the Thunder Nova 35 100 watt like you have. I also have an 80 watt JPT M7 Mopa fiber and a 10 watt diode laser Lasermatic 10 for high resolution engraving but it is so slow comparing to a fiber and my Thunder Nova laser. I also have a Laser Pecker 4 for super portability. Anyway, I was thinking of getting a UV galvo as my next laser but not sure if I should get the Bolt instead of the UV laser. Here are my questions to you. 1. How well does the Bolt engrave on glass , leather/leatherette, and certain plastic? I am concern mainly the glass since the UV laser will be focus on glass. 2. Did you figure out the rotary scratching problem that you mentioned on your previous video? 3. Is it worth it to buy the Bolt instead of a UV laser? I am thinking of buying the Bolt to replace my Lasermatic 10 diode laser due to the much faster speed and able to cut any type of acrylics. I see many Thunder owners buying the Bolt even though they already have another Thunder laser. I think they (including yourself) probably buy the Bolt for the higher resolution engraving, no chiller, fast speed, etc .. However, most do not have a diode laser like I do which I use mainly for high resolution engraving despite its slow speed. My biggest dilemma now is whether to buy the UV galvo or the Bolt. I know that one of your answer will be what I will use the machine for but I am looking for something beyond that reasoning. Thanks. Oh, forgot to ask this: Comparing tumbler engraving, which one produce better result? Bolt or Nova 35?

    • @goldgulfcoastdesignericsho8628
      @goldgulfcoastdesignericsho8628 Рік тому

      As I was doing my research it was going to be between the Thunder / or Boss. And I found out relatively quickly that the support and warranty was really good and there is more resources available with Thunder products. I’ve had one break down on my CO2 machine in two years it was the controller within 3days I was up and running! So when we we’re going to purchase a Fiber Laser it was a no brainer to go with the Thunder Aurora. Now I could have purchased a much cheaper machine from another company but the setup and support is what has sold me. And the machine has its own enclosure VERY Important. Everyone that gets a open fiber Laser with no enclosure they always wind up making something for it. We’re about to purchase another Nova 35/100 or a Odin we haven’t decided what machine yet. But it will be a Thunder machine they have never given me anything only a T-shirt when I purchased each machine I definitely can tell you I’m A very satisfied customer.
