🧩 Unlocking Words: Introducing Morphology to Middle Schoolers 🧩 (Science of Reading)
Tired of students struggling with vocabulary?
This video shows you tools to introduce morphology to middle schoolers.
Morphology is the study of morphemes, the smallest units of meaning in a language.
In this video, veteran teacher Nikki Gardner shares her step-by-step approach to introducing the 3 types of morphemes:
- Prefixes: Learn the job of a prefix and its three types (e.g., un-, re-, and pre-
- Suffixes: Understand how inflectional & derivational suffixes impact a base (e.g., -er, -est, -ly, -ful)
- Bases: Understand what a base is and it's 2 types:
---Free Bases: Words that can stand alone (e.g., "happy," "friend")
---Bound Bases: Morphemes that must attach to a prefix or suffix to make a word (e.g., "port" in transport, and "struct" in "structure")
Nikki walks you through resources she uses, and provides engaging classroom ideas, printable resources, and tips for differentiating instruction.
Watch and learn how to empower your students to become confident and independent word learners!
