Doug Martsch of Built to Spill on getting into music
Переглядів 12 тис.3 роки тому
Another segment of Doug Chats! This time, Doug talks a bit about getting into music, his near-career in comics, not going to college, and how rad his mom is.
This guy is a brilliant song writer 🎉 it’s obvious he was born to do it. how lucky we are that he did! 🤗❤️🎶
R.E.M. on Letterman changed lives.
boring
bro got a negative attention span
"My brother and sister both went to lots of colleges and became professors." Yeah but YOU'RE DOUG MARTSCH. You wrote classic after classic record. To me that's an equal tradeoff.
What about the promise ring?,
doug martch would first beat you down you have no reason to treat him like that
I wish my mom was like Doug, also, cool that Doug got a song written about him back then
Yeah but yr Doug Martsch...You play incredibly fluid complex parts made to sound simple...Also you play progressions that sound like trademark riffs, unlike any other. Don't give me this punk rock bulls$%! Lol lol love this guy forever now, going to see him solo next week at a private gig. So excited!
Sounds like Krist big time.
I'm not kidding when I say he's one of the all time greatest musicians to ever live. Love ya Doug
Heck yeah, it's always✌️ nice hearing from Doug.
For some reason? Early R.E.M. is the shit.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😻😻😻😻😻😻
Hes got a very sympathetic voice, full of heart. I love this voice, even when he doesnt sing. Maybe this fulness manifests in his genius music, how can this man say hes not a good guitarist?! I think hes very agreeable to be around...
I've never heard someone admit to writing lyrics and music like I do - play some music, I like it, it goes in a song. Write words that I feel flow, throw it in. It's another instrument.
He sounds so much like Krist Novoselic lol
Yes 🙌
Amazing! Love hearing details from this magical and mysterious man! Excited for the new album, loooved Untethered very much!! Just wish the majestic 5 piece would return!! No offense to the 3-4 pieces, but having Jim and Brett is the best!!!
1:30 4:10
Would love to see Doug's drawings (and maybe have one in the collection?!)
i listen to going against your mind all the time
Randy described eternity 🤘
Lifelong Built to Spill fan can't wait for the new record and although I've heard it before loved Unoriginal Artists. Awesome seeing these interviews as I've only met the guy a couple times after shows.
what song is he talking about at 3:30? the "newer" one?
I wondered about that too. Maybe it's "When I'm Blind" but could be any other song too. I also thought of the unreleased song called "Understood". Who knows
@@daniellegg6512 I thought I heard Things fall apart...
Yes, it was just noted on the closing...
I’ve heard this before. “The lyrics are nonsense…random.” Always found that very difficult to believe.
very. you can tell when it's random, a lot of the earlier stuff is certainely about something specific.
I enjoy Dino Jr equally and don't really care about the lyrics.. music, melody, the beat.. all matter more than the lyrics
@@PageandPlant4LifeDinosaur Jr. is my favorite band, and I saw Built to Spill open for them in 2022. I love both bands.
Thanks 🙂🤙
It was time there was a channel dedicated to Built to Spill, I’ll watch its growth with great interest
Have you checked out Built To Spill Tapes at all?
Love the interview and great topic! Doug seems so normal and it's so inspirational to me.
I relate to what Doug says about how visual art isn't nearly as much of a social or scene-building medium as music is, but what's interesting is I think it's the opposite for my kids. Their friends all seem to do art, all seem to want to share their art online, and that's what draws them together way more than their taste in music. And I don't think my kids are out of the norm. I think it's somehow changed for this generation for whatever reason.
I think that’s true, and it’s unfortunate for music, broadly speaking, that this has become the norm.
@@slacktoryrecords4193 One depressing thing to me is that so much of the art seems to be "fan art." I realize that's a place to start, but it would be the equivalent of if Treepeople were a cover band or something.
@@cominginsecond Yes that’s exactly right. “Fan art” is plaguing my other love-older movies released on Blu-ray- currently too. And it’s *bad* fan art.
@@cominginsecond a lot of bands just start playing songs they like then move into their own stuff, so it's kind of the same thing
as an art kid, yeah I totally get that. I didn’t grow up in that time, so i don’t know if it’s the same or different but I definitely know more art kids who share art with their friends, but not as many music or band kids. However, now I am getting into music and have been playing with some of my friends 😋
love doug
Bernie (his mom) is awesome!
