Dry flies in January? Sure!
A week day outing on the Arkansas River below Pueblo Dam. While this was the second straight time to Pueblo, my buddy and I saw a forecast of 50 and sunny that we couldn't pass up!
It took 3 hours to get a bite, then I caught a few on nymphs, and then for 2 hours it was non-stop rising trout to dry flies. I only needed one dry: a purple parachute adams.
The fish were on the smaller side but lots of them. Sometimes it turns out to be a quantity day, which is just fine.

A 24-hour solo backpacking trip to 3 alpine lakes in Colorado. The fishing was not as fast as usual, but the scenery and bull moose near my campsite made up for it. I saw zero other people on this trip and the feeling of being alone was quite real.

A 2-night/3-day alpine lake backpacking trip into the Missouri Lakes in the Holy Cross Wilderness near Minturn and Red Cliff, Colorado. My friend Shahryar (big Lakers fan) joined me for his first wilderness experience and first time fly fishing. We used dry flies for cutthroat trout and brook trout. We also had an awesome stay at Eagle River Inn to start the trip.

You've earned a subscriber! The few alpine lake videos I've watched are all ones I've fished. I got so excited to see this one and that scramble of a hike to the lake where you caught cutthroat, as I've done that hike just to get to that lake (and I got skunked, too... and have learned so much since then that I want redemption lol). I've been to the upper ones too, but from the other direction. You'll want to get back to that smaller one as it holds some special trout. The one time I've been to it, I forgot the reel for my main rod! Argh! So, I got by with my el cheapo rod and reel (thank goodness I had it!) setup for streamer fishing with sinking line. I'll definitely be going back because I only caught a tiny one.
I was so excited for the smaller lake, and so bummed I couldn’t get a take. I think I just went too early in the morning for that time of September. But I will be going back!! Thanks for watching my videos and subscribing!!
This spot is on my list for this year. Great to hear the fishing was great. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, get up there! And if the wind howls and puts down the bugs/surface activity, just put the wind at your back and launch weighted leech streamers and wait for the tug!
ODR baby, yeah!
Honestly, I love it haha. Small, numerous, pretty cutts and just enough of a hike for some ambiance.
Great video! Missing the alpine!keep it up!
@@Frank_Chavez11 thank you!! I’ll be doing my first 2025 backcountry trip in just under 4 months!!
But how many burgers??
No burgers!! My wife made a big batch of curry that I had to help eat through, so I was eating at home that night!
@@Hi-CountryCutts-wc3jz I'd definitely opt for the homemade curry, anybody can buy burgers. Good choice!!
I'm from the Springs but have been in VA for 20+ years. It's nice seeing you go to some of the same spots as a kid and teen.
That’s awesome! And I am happy to report these spots still fish well!!
If nothing was weighted did you use split shot?
Yes! I put a large split shot on halfway between my indicator and my leech.
Next time you visit stop at Gray's Coors Tavern and try a green chili slopper. IMO, better than What-a-Burger.
Alright Gray’s is on my list now haha. Thank you for the rec!
Thank you for this video! I live on the Western Slope and will plan a trip this Summer to go fishing in Pueblo.
Do it! Couple additional tips: 1. Go on a week day if you can (there were 200-300 people on the river on this Sunday) 2. fish the fast water in addition to the deep/slower runs, the fast water is loaded with juvenile rainbows. 3. Don’t leave anything visible in your car, as break ins can be a problem in Pueblo. I’ve had no issues in 2 trips down there, but it pays to be aware ahead of time.
By summer the reservoir has started its summer discharges for irrigation so wading becomes a bit harder. Best time is still fall/winter/spring after BOR starts winter storage and water flows drop.
@@altrujillo3566 I want to go in late summer for some catfish. I heard there is flathead catfish in that spillway and the lake?
@@ferrari_guy3570 A good time to be there at night. You might also take a look at the spilling basin on John Martin Reservoir. Been a while since I've been there but I remember some nice fish coming out of there. Call the aquatic biologist at Pueblo and Lamar for better info.
Better than the reel hustle guys, better than lance fishes! Just quite nice shots and fishing! Big fan of this content! No ego. Just fishing!
Thank you! And I appreciate the kind words! I'm not quite good enough to have an ego haha, although admittedly I'm going to have to check those other guys out and see what they got going on. Tight lines sir!
You know what I'm sick of is yuppie fly fisherman dude a four-way you need it bigger than a 4 weight for that guy I've caught 20 lb trout on a 5 weight I've got 10 lb fish on a three weight you guys are douchebags you calling that those big fish shows how clueless you really are dude
Would a stock 4runner make it up there? August is my favorite alpine month
I would feel confident in that, yup.
Looked like a beautiful day on the tailwater. I haven't fished that area in over 15 years. Hoping to make the club trip.
Yes it was like 68 and no to low wind. I think it would be great on a weekday. I think the club trip in Feb is on a Monday, which is ideal. For example, I didn’t fish a single typical plunge pool all day because there were 2-3 anglers in each one haha.
Great video. John Gierach loved the IPW. May he rest in peace
John Gierach books are getting me through this winter! I inter-library loaned his Fly Fishing the High Country book. Such a good read. I am ready for summer already. I think I’ll be getting out on my first backcountry trip in May at this point (pending some slight weather cooperation) and counting down the days.
Thanks for the video and Happy New Year from Texas! God bless
Cool video What are a few of your favorite IPW lakes?
Thank you! If you send me an email at the address in my profile, I am happy to send you some intel!
Glad you did so well and delighted you took us fishing with you. I enjoyed it.
I appreciate the kind words! I love fishing these Colorado freestones but ja merw 8 more months until the alpine lakes and high country open up! (lol)
👍! !! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
Lovely river and the trout are beautiful! Worth the long drive!
Thank you! Yes, they were! Always nice to share a long drive like that with someone, but also insane to be the only person on the water when the fishing is hot haha.
November is one of my favorite months to fish. Not a ton of people out and the fishing can be pretty productive. Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed your video!
I appreciate the kind words! A couple other reasons I specifically like November are 1) up here at higher elevations it takes a minute for the fish to warm up in the mornings, so there’s a little bit less mania in the AM to be on the water and 2) the early sunset makes me get back to my family at a reasonable hour hahaha. I checked out your page as well - you’ve got some good stuff going on up there in the PNW!
@ definitely agree it’s nice to get home earlier to the family haha. Thanks for checking out the channel!
Great video. I grew up in Gypsum and now I live in West Vail. You should come fish the Gore Creek. Also, you ever do any ice fishing ?
I bet you know this stretch of water quite well!! I really want to fish Gore, especially in the wilderness section. I love those small alpine streams. I have done a good amount of ice fishing in the Midwest but have not broken into it here in Colorado. Last winter I fly fished the tailwaters a lot to scratch my itch in the winter season.
Love your videos. Appreciate the technique, the safe handling of the fish, and the sheer fun you have. I keep intending to get to the Eagle, but I just don't know it that well. I'll get there. :) Now that you have new waders and boots, even the changing weather won't get in your way. Hope you keep fishing even as the weather changes, I'll keep an eye where you go next!
@@mgardner63 I appreciate the kind words! And I highly, highly recommend the Eagle! I’m no expert on it but it feels like a really good, all-natural freestone. And obviously the fish have a good food supply haha. Yup I’ll definitely be getting out Dec-March for tailwater fish. But I’m counting down until May when the Gunnison gorge/canyon start up and then the alpine lakes in quick succession after that!
😆totally gutsy pushing the weather window, be careful on those roads!!!
Vail Pass had 2’ of snow on the shoulder but the road was clear!
Great spot I was at that same lake in July and the wind was HOWLING and they were getting ready to spawn so a tough day on the water!!! Still managed to catch one in the inlet.
Good intel that the spawn is still on up there in July. Sorry the fishing wasn't more "on" when you went, but glad it wasn't a skunk! Makes me think August to mid Sept for when I inevitably return haha.
Nice catch!
Thank you!! It’s a cool spot. I was kind of hoping they would go for some bigger nymphs like stoneflies or bigger mayfly nymphs, but they wanted the teeny tiny stuff. Oh well!
Yep, the Eagle has been fishing really well for a few years! My only critique of it is that it can get crowded, especially toward weekends. I've experienced folks walking right up next to me as if I wasn't already there, acting like they didn't see me resting a piece of water and rerigging, mostly at a prime spot. Etiquette needs to be practiced!! I'm looking forward to floating some sections of the Eagle next year, doing some research over the winter. Glad y'all got out and got into some quality fish!
I can see the crowds part. There were a decent number of people there even though it required a multi-mile walk in.
Going after white fish?
Honestly I didn’t even know they were present in that river until my friend caught one. But I do love whitefish - they’re usually big, fight well, and will eat my big attractor fly when the trout are eating size 20s 😂
Glad you were able to get out during this fantastic prolonged Indian Summer! I returned today from 5 days/ 4 nights out to the Glenwood Springs area. I'll send you my report separately.
I am so jealous! I haven’t been on the water since this Ark day on Oct 7 and I’m getting withdrawals 😂.
@@Hi-CountryCutts-wc3jz October 7????? You need to get out at least a day per week if possible, but I know it's difficult with family obligations. I was lucky to get out 3 days per week all of October. We'll catch up at the next HPD meeting.
The best trout are the one's you earn! Tight lines! I had decent luck with a mini hot garcia chartreuse sz16 in some of the alpine lakes this fall lotta decent cutt and rainbows.
That would be a good fly! I’m going to give that a shot.
Good editing
Thank you!!
I want to make a trip up there so bad!!
Get up there! Plenty of fishable water! You can get brooks, browns, rainbows, cutts, grayling and whitefish all within like 10 miles.
Glad you were able to get some time on the water during your family trip, looks like a nice variety and probably more relaxing not lugging a backpack miles in to get to the fishing!
Haha it was a good break not to keep my house on my back 😂 it was a good variety too. Some spots I could go explore in way more depth/detail in my next trips up there (we go 2x per year).
Awesome adventure!
Thank you!!
Awesome place!
It really is!
Awesome scene of the two fighter jets flying over. The coolest memory my brother and I have are two F-18s zooming up Elevenmile Canyon while we were fly fishing.
Two jets going over in a canyon like that would be unbelievable…
That is one wilderness that I never visited before moving to the Bestern Slope. I think I'll need to make a trip back, that lake is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.
I would recommend it for sure! Nobody else fishing, it was crazy. Place could have (maybe should have) been packed.
Just wanted to chime in to say how much I've enjoyed your channel! I'm glad you had a good season of fishing and hiking. I just moved to Colorado this year and managed to catch some high country cutts in the James Peak Wilderness and the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. Such beautiful fish and great environments to catch them in! Here's to more tight lines for both of us!
Thank you Christopher! Appreciate the kind words. If you did all that in your first year in Colorado, 1) congratulations, 2) you're way, way ahead of the game and 3) you just opened up millions of acres in CO, WY, MT, ID and NM you can explore!! Amen to more tight lines!!
Awesome video man. I lived in BV for a while and went up some 14ers out there. Never fished those high mountain lakes though. Impressive!
Get out there!! Some of those lakes have some reallllly cool species and some bigger fish. That area around BV and Salida is so cool!
Great video! Thanks for sharing and now a new subscriber. 👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you!!
Great video. That's my favorite type of fishing. Spent last Monday doing doing the same thing in the Snowy Range. Love those small lakes that get little pressure.
Thank you! Re: the Snowys, so jealous. I was scheduled to go to up there for the first time in August but my window of days was 45 mph wind there and I was taking a guy who had never fly fished before, so we did an audible to Missouri Lakes by Red Cliffe (CO). I am heading up to Lander WY this week though and I can get some nice elbow room up there on lakes and rivers.
This made me smile! I first fished it in the early eighties, my favorite spot in the Never summers. My wife and all 4 of my children fished it with me through the years. Since the Troublesome fire I was worried it burned. My favorite fly was always a black ant or a royal coachman. I’m almost 70 and hope to make it a few more times. Thanks you for this video!
That’s awesome! What great memories. Well rest assured that the bowl/lake were in great shape. Some beetle kill down there but overall seems to be in excellent health. I camped next to a few elk hunters who made it seem like the big game was doing well on the area as well. I think it’s worth another repeat visit! I threw a black hi-vis parachute Adam’s that probably strongly resembled a black ant and got the first fish of the video on it. But I accidentally cut the fly off thereafter and didn’t have another one in my box!
Living in Colorado I always will fish those high alpine lakes until they ice up or too much snow to get to!! Late Sept early October depending on the weather!! Good Luck Fishing!!
Thank you! I do plan to in the future! Only issue is this year I’ve had a LOT of days on the water and need to spend the remaining weekends on the home front with the wife and daughter 😂
All the fish looked very healthy! Roll casts and side casts definitely lose fewer flies to trees 😉 Weather looked pretty cooperative. Nice way to end the backcountry season, glad you were mindful of hunting season...better to be safe.
@@wylde-lyfe Thanks!! Hey, I like the orange to make sure I stay alive on these trips in Sept/Oct!
Very cool. What tent do you use in the video?
Thank you! This is a Tarptent Motrail. I got it off of Craigslist back in 2018 when I was first interested in backpacking, and ashamed to admit I didn't use it until 2023. (Kid kind of pushed back the hobbies a bit!). Tarptent actually discontinued this tent a few years ago. And to be honest, while I like it and got 14 nights out of it, it's not the world's best lightweight tension tent. So I splurged and bought a Zpacks Duplex, which arrived at my house about 2 hours after I drove to the trailhead for this video. So will be busting out the Duplex in next year's backcountry adventures!
Enjoyed every video, thanks. Hope you put something else out till next season, maybe gear you use ,tips, etc. God bless
@@davidschroeder6799 thanks David! Yes, thinking of doing a video on my fly fishing backpacking setup and then how I prepare my dehydrated cold-soak meals!
@Hi-CountryCutts-wc3jz Sounds great. I'm a subscriber so I won't miss it. Thanks
Great end to the summer! Awesome location. Nice production.
Thanks Kevin!! You guys will have to join on a camping trip out here.
Man you should check out the grand Mesa on the western slope, I’d bet you’d have a pretty rad time. Dig the content dude, fish on
Thank you for the suggestion! I have heard and read really good things about that area. I’m going to do some research this winter and see if I can get something feasible going out there.
@@Hi-CountryCutts-wc3jz lots of easy to access water so look for something to hike into if you want to avoid crowds. Plenty of options either way to look. Good luck out there
Just wanted to mention - Grand Mesa made my short list (1 of 2 potential spots haha) for taking my nephew out this June. Thank you again for the suggestion!
@@Hi-CountryCutts-wc3jz glad to hear it, bring bug spray!
Another great video - nice fish!
Thank you!! I’ll be back up there in my life for the shear beauty (and the big fish) that’s for sure.
That fish your neighbor K caught was what, 19"? Gorgeous!! I was glad to make it up there at my age the night prior with a full backpacking setup, and get into my decent 17" cutt on a #14 cinnamon ant to break the ice. I think the bite was mostly a timing thing that day. It was great to fish up high with y'all (finally!).
I honestly think his cutt was a hair over 20”. Which is huge! You killed it with your camping / backpacking setup up there! I actually switched to a cinnamon any myself after you left and caught like 4 fish on it haha.
Love your videos man. I drove up Hagerman pass (need high clearance 4WD), and hiked to Virginia Lake from the top in search of greenbacks last weekend. Unbelievable area of Colorado!
That’s awesome! Sounds gorgeous. Yeah I love that Collegiate Peaks / Holy Cross contiguous area. Not enough summers in a lifetime to probably explore them thoroughly. Ron Belak’s book 800 high lakes in CO is my inspiration though.
@@Hi-CountryCutts-wc3jz Thanks for the recommendation - I will have to check it out. I share the same love for that area!
@@rexbonez2 If you drop me an email at the address in my profile, I can give you some specific spots in the region. You might already know them, but if not, they are solid!
