I Built a Home Mushroom Lab | DIY Mycology Lab
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK - I would love to hear from you!
Having a dedicated space for mycology has been a long-term dream of mine. After moving out to an old farmhouse, I decided to put in the work to transform a dirty, cluttered room, into my very own mushroom laboratory. I know it's nothing special relatively speaking, but for me it is a very special spot.
This space gives me so much opportunity to run cool #mycology experiments and it has really upgraded my #mushroom game.
If you enjoyed watching this video, please like it and consider subscribing to my channel! I have a bunch of cool experiments on the way and I'm excited to share them.
Don't hesitate to ask any questions. I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible.

I would also appreciate if you liked this video and considered subscribing to my channel to stay tuned! I had a great day out in the woods and the morels keep on coming. When this scholarship was first announced through my club, the NAMA Appalachia Foray 2023 had been sold out for a while. I feel blessed and grateful beyond words. Thank you to the Alberta Mycological Society and the North American Mycological Association for this unforgettable opportunity. I made this video as concise as I could. There were so many great experiences and conversations that could...
Great video. What microscope are you using ?
Thanks! I have a Swift SW380T Compound Trinocular Microscope.
Yooo Bro! Keep up this interesting videos. May I ask where you got your laminar flow hood from?
Thanks man! I have new videos coming out every second Thursday😃 I got the laminar flow hood on Etsy. There are lots out there I'm sure that are good, but I've been really pleased with mine from a seller called Vall3DP
I've been growing mushrooms for several years and my partner and I are starting a gourmet mushroom farm business. Fresh air has definitely been one of the hardest things to dial in, I'd suggest playing around with how often you exchange your air, 3 minutes every 2 hours for a tent that size seems to me like it might be suffocating the mushrooms in their own CO2. Maybe try 30 seconds to a minute every 15 or 30 minutes. It shouldn't take 3 minutes to evacuate the entire tent, smaller volume of exchanging at more frequent time intervals seems to be better for smaller grow spaces in my experience. Love your passion and video! Keep up the great work :)
This was the comment I needed - thank you very much for giving me a tip on how to improve my FAE! I just switched over to a cycle of 45 seconds every 30 minutes. 👍 That's super cool to hear your hobby growing has evolved into a business opportunity. I often consider a similar path and might have to pick your brain sometime... All the best of luck to you in your venture! Where are you based out of?
Maaaate, well done! Your video is perfect!!!!! Ty I’m 2years behind you I think and I think you’ve just cut off 6months with your advice. Ty again liked, subscribed!x
Much appreciated! I'm glad you found value in the video & I'm happy to have you around. It's a great hobby - let me know if you have any questions along the way👍
very cool room, good luck on the project
Thanks! I have lots of fun stuff underway😃
living my dreams bro!
It's been real. I don't think I'll ever make it back to the city life - at least not in the same way as before I left.
Where did you get that laminar flow hood?
i kept watching and saw that its 3d printed lol. that thing is awesome its a perfect size.
@@fyresails Yeah it's a great size for a home setup. There are lots of sellers on Etsy that deliver nice 3D printed flow hoods!
The timing on this upload for me is crazy. just started learning about growing mushrooms a week ago
Mycology is a deep rabbit hole and so much fun! Let me know if you have any questions throughout your process. I'm no expert - but I'm learning more every day🍄
how much did everything cost. 3K?
I got lucky with some pieces, so it looks like 2,200CAD (ish). It would be $3K if everything was acquired at value, so you nailed the guess. $300 - Microscope $300 - Dehydrator $600 - Pressure Cooker $300 - Flow hood $200 - table + supplies to clean $75 - Humidifer $75 - Fan $50 - Incubation Tent $300 - Miscellaneous gear $0 - Smart Controller / Automation (I used to work at the company and was gifted a controller when I left) $0 - Main grow tent (someone online wanted to get rid of it) Lots of money saved by asking family to pool on holiday gifts, helping with the bigger items, like the microscope, pressure cooker, and dehydrator. Thanks for watching & let me know if you have any other questions😃
I got the same thing going on since I became disabled, I'm about a year and a half in and I have an indoor permaculture farm pushing out herbs all winter long 😊
Growing indoors is such a rewarding hobby to help get through winter. I'm glad to hear you're all set up! What herbs are you growing primarily?
@ethanzapach right now I'm mostly doing basil, mint, rosemary, and parsley, but also some jalapenos and some apple tree saplings that I'll plant out doors in the spring
I use my old substrate from my oyster mushrooms as the "soil" for my plants
Up in my cold climate I haven't even thought about starting spring seeds yet😅 It sounds like you're killing it - what an awesome array of green goodies! That spent mushroom substrate is pure gold for plants. I personally can't wait until my old blocks start popping out some extra compost-pile mushrooms in the spring time!
Wow it’s amazing to see how you transformed completely a room full of stuff in the dedicated space for mycology research 🎉 looking forward to see all the awesome things you are doing!
Thanks for watching! I have a lot of projects currently in the works & I'm glad to have you along for the journey😁
Awesome bro
Thank you kindly!
Build a beaver box!!!!
What’s the trail called?
Never mind it’s in the video
It’s Karst Springs! There’s some more information in the description
😊
Amazing I'm in alberta would love to hike this
It was awesome and I will definitely be going back at some point! I’d recommend it in the fall; the moss was glowing and we were some of the only people there

This spot is a dream ✨
🍄🌿
Amazing content!!!!!
I'm trying to reach your level🙏
You have mushrooms in North America in spring??? Damn we In Poland need to wait for autumn.
Our season really gets going in July- September - but morels and oysters start popping up in spring! There are lots of other inedible mushrooms coming out that I want to document as well.
The best foraging partner around!
No doubt!
Awesome 🤟 Loved it! <3
I appreciate it :)
First Comment :D
Mike's Videos of Beavers has great beaver content. He records the beavers in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He always has close encounters, but generally they sniff his shoes and walk away. Great work
Mike’s Videos of Beavers is the golden standard of beaver content! Thanks for the comment 😄
Gotta admire these very industrious rodents !!!
Absolutely, they are fascinating creatures and they work SO hard!
Angry beavers are dangerous
Always have a weapon. If it comes to my life they will lose everytime. Stay safe.
That's a good suggestion, thanks for the safety wishes!
Bro pulled a "Drax the destroyer" card there. He mastered the ability of standing so incredibly still and he became invisible to the eyes of the Beavers.
Have been told that the meat from a beaver is similar in texture and flavor as grass-fed beef...
Interesting! I’m grateful we don’t have another meat to add to the “tastes like chicken” list.
@@ethanzapach Gotta thank our blessings wherever we find them...
Thank you for sharing your experience! So wild, but what a way to learn haha!!
Leave it to beaver.
Cool video! Beavers are really cool animals. They are a lot bigger than most people think they are. I lived in Utah for 5 years and there are a lot of beavers. My son and I were swimming in a small stream one time and a HUGE male beaver came swimming up stream and we were in its way. It started slapping its tail and making hissing noises telling us to get out of the way. We did.
Thanks a lot! They are definitely big when you're up close and they aren't shy about telling you to move away. I couldn't imagine being in the water with one... thanks for sharing!
ua-cam.com/video/igK-X7DPdqU/v-deo.html. beavers can be quite aggressive!
Definitely they can! It doesn't help that they have iron-coated teeth too😅
Heck yea. New subscriber
Heck yea!
I love Beaver, thighs wide open!
I could feel the tension through the video when they were right next to you. Sweet vid man!
Thanks man! Sitting there I had a vivid image in my head of the beaver running up and biting an artery in my leg or something with those iron-coated teeth... I appreciate the comment :)

It’s quite intriguing to observe how both beavers, upon passing in front of you at different times, pause at the very same spot to sniff the air. It’s as if they’re pinpointing the exact location where the wind carries your scent. That interaction with the subtle cues of their surroundings!
Agreed, I think that's exactly what is happening. It's interesting how well adapted they are for their surroundings, despite their poor eyesight. Also, I won't take it personally that they think I'm stinky enough for a 10 second sniff😆
Bro i am from Kenya. Loved this video, haters gonna hate! Keep posting! Subscribed!
Thank you - much love to you from Canada!
Thanks for sharing your experience…anyone with wildlife experience knows never to cross a beaver, a moose, a coyote, and a few others in our beautiful country! Really looking forward to future videos! Cheers!🇨🇦
I’m learning more every day! Thanks for watching and the kind comment! 😁

Invite them into the house for dinner and make them an offer they can’t refuse
My desire to invite them in for dinner is constantly waged against my slightly greater desire to not get giardia...
