The wood shouldn’t be flush with the eye. The pins should be perpendicular with the force on axes and at an angle with mauls and hammers. But most concerning is the face of the head isn’t perpendicular with the handle when you mounted it. Why post if it’s wrong?

The problem you're having with that gun is likely due to a weak slide release spring (aka carrier release spring). Replacing it with a considerably stronger spring will likely fix the problem of the shells opening the action after firing. Call the manufacturer and see if they will fix it for free.

Nothing beats a wooden handle and normally one doesn’t over strike at least not bad and the wooden handle is perfect plus unless you hang the head you don’t know for certain what the wood really is

put some wax on your saw blade, trial fit the axe head, shave handle until you have minimal wood curls. don't be using a metal hammer on wood, use a mallet or hide lump hammer or at least synthetic _bleh !_ headed mallet. good to check handle heel is chamfered, makes it less likely to splinter.
