PC Clone market grew bigger than IBM itself. Together they muscled IBM aside. IBM then sold off their consumer PC business to Lenovo.
Thank you very much for a well researched, thorough, yet concise and enjoyable documentation.
gotta work on that AI. Sounds ridicuous.
Rod Canion killed IBM. For those in-the-know.
The IBM PC was honestly pretty cack, far behind competitor products like Commodore’s Amiga. But it was a big, trusted brand that generated confidence. Businesses assumed it would be supported indefinitely and would have a lot of software written for it. So they bought PCs, strengthening the feedback loop further.
It’s pronounced “Commodore Pet”, not “Commodore Pee Ee Tee”.
I graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in the early 1980s. IBM was a major engineering employer in my town and we graduates all interviewed with them. They were the ultimate in stuffy! Every other company I interviewed with was open minded and forward thinking. IBM was into suits, boring meetings, and no first names. It was like stepping back into the 1960s.
IBM was and is today a B2B company with a sales force suited to sell to big companies. This sales channel was much too expensive to sell PCs. However, they learned to built their big expensive hardware at the ridiculous cost of a small PC. They sold off the low margin business and went back to big iron.
for my 18th birthday i wished for a phone with coloured display or a really nice digital camera. My parents gifted me the sony ericsson k800i. It was my best companion for years. It still workes! I loved it dearly. Whoever told my parents that that phone was the best of both worlds- you were right. Thank you very much
I knew & worked with Don Estridge "The Father of The IBM PC". ESD in Boca Raton, FL HQ produced products that neithet Apple, HP, etc....could ignore. IBM failed by not providing a clear, logical upward migration path from PCs to AS400s to mainframes.
IBM HAS BECOME AN ALSO RAN BECAUSE IT HAS NOT AND IS NOT LED BY CREATIVE, INNOVATIVE, VISIONARY LEADERS RATHER THE PAST & PRESENT CEOS ARE MORE FOCUSED ON MAINTAINING STOCK DIVIDENDS RATHER THAN CREATING NEW UNIQUE NICHE PRODUCTS & SERVICES.
As a retired 30+ yr IBMer, IBM Divisions spent more time/$$$/effort fighting each other than developing solutions paying customers would buy. Product managements in Rochester, San Jose, Lexington, Austin, ESD, DPD, GSD, NDD, etc...... promoted what was "best" for their products not what was best for IBM. THE STANDING JOKE IN IBM WAS: "IBM DID NOT HAVE A REVENUE PROBLEM, IBM HAD A REAL ESTATE PROBLEM, ONE ACRE TOO MANY, JOHN AKERS" BUREAUCRATIC PARALYSIS, LACK OF STRATEGIC PRODUCT INTEGRATION. IBM'S ASININE ATTEMPTS WITH OS/2, etc.... How many more examples of misguided mismanagement would you like to discuss?
Love all of the clearly Amiga images and stuff
At abot the 12 minute mark, the video mentions the Atari ST. It said it couldn't compete with Apple or IBM computers, but their main competitior was always Commodore! The Commodore Amiga was the competition for the ST, and the Commodore 64 was always more popular than their 8 bit computers like the Atari 400 and 800. The Commodore 64 sold more units than any other brand or model at one point!
Wtaching on a 2024 razr lol.
How about an analysis of the collapse of HP too.
The downfall started when Watson Jr. told Gates "Nobody wants a computer on their desk' . They had a "mainframe only" mindset that was their undoing.
the only company that could top IBM was the old Bell System.( the most amazing company no one knows about)
IBM also provides I.T. Industry Staffing and Consulting Services,, through it's "IBM Global Services" Brand (previously "IBM Consulting"). I actually worked for "IBM Global Services" about 10-15 years back, on a huge Computer & Server Deployment Project.
Steve Jobs protected Apple's computer technology by refusing to sell their OS so clones are few. Now IBM created the PC and it was quickly copied in Taiwan and soon clones were everywhere. Eventually IBM sold their PC division to Lenovo. I was importing parts from Taiwan before there was a clone PC. That was 1984. There were other PC's before the IBM ones but they died when the IBM PC was introduced.
"I've Been Moved" was a common complaint by career IBM employees
None of these reasons are what contributed to the downfall. In the 90's, the pc market exploded, both in business and in home pc's. IBM pc's were quite expensive, but there was just one problem; from a technical standpoint, they were no better than their competition, and in some cases, even inferior. Why would people pay a premium for IBM when they could get a Dell or HP/Compaq machine with specs just as good (or sometimes better) for a big discount? Lenovo recognized this, and priced their pc's accordingly
Raaa-Zr LMFAO
IBM's dead? Then so is COBOL 😂🤣

I BRIEFLY worked for ibm. I was told “if you aren’t working 45hrs a week you don’t have enough to do”. When I replied I am paid for 40hrs a week, I only work when I’m paid, I was told to bill the client for 45hrs anyway. I refused and found another job, post haste. They are a predatory company.
Heh, heh... "Two hundred and eighty-six".
I had ericsson 1018 and ericsson sharkfin r310.. afters some nokias i also had k550i
As a swede I had Ericsson phones, then I had several Sony Ericsson , and now I'm on my third Sony...and my next is probably a...Sony..
ibm is more healthy to day then ever in the past
My first phone was a Sony Ericsson slider phone.... Unfortunately a thief stole the mobile through my bedroom window...
Graduated in 1985, got an internship at IBM HQ in senior year, and a great F/T offer upon graduation. Started in tech support, but since I was so great at creating user interfaces, they put me in their "graphics" dept. My job was the HAND WRITE flip charts for execs. It had to be perfect print. It was my entire day of work, just writing charts from their scribble. I'll spare you the rest of my journey with them, but it was one waste of my talents after another. When I finally quit 7 years later, I warned them Akers (CEO) poor decisions re: PC, software, and personnel were going to drive the stock value into the ground (yes, I burned a bridge, it wouldn't be the last time I've done that either.... I am very much like "Cortez"... burn it, move forward, survive or die). They wished me well. Stock went from 134 to just 42 over the next few years.
Isn't Boeing going the same way ?
Selling commodity hardware/software was NEVER IBM's mission. It was, and continues to be, providing services to businesses and governments. Which it continues to do very well. Granted for a while, IBM was afflicted by mismanagement, but that only lasts for a relatively short time, especially for a publicly owned company.
I remember 'the old IB' days' interchangeable hard disks, mainframes then there water-cooled mainframes the TSO and and and , ,
I had the Sony Ericsson J105
my dad got me a c510. brilliant cybershot camera with walkman headphones and music player. its 3.2 mp camera captured great details. had a video call in my school with this. i miss those days.
@22:40 John Cleese? He looks so young here. For good reason.
I was involved with IBM from two aspects I programmed IBM 360's and was in the micro computer hobby. During that time I became friends with a programmer named Michael who worked at Microsoft and was sent to somewhere in England on the development of OS/2. He came back and spoke so badly of IBM and their bureaucracy that he was kicked off the team and put on Windows. Apple was growing but decided they needed to enter the business space. That led to the abandonment of Apple II and of us hobbiests. At the time it was a common joke that an Apple needed only 16M of memory to run while the IBM needed 640M. And due to it's price NO ONE wanted an IBM. But after the loss of Apple II we moved to IBM clones. So then came the PS/2 and that was aweful. They were slow, they were very expensive, and you could not use secondary market products for any part of the computer. But IBM had another weapon up their sleeves. People placed to "help" companies were placed in banks and other major consumers of IBM mainframes. So they took executives out to fancy dinners and trips on yachts and the managers came back ordering technicians to use IBM. I don't know what happened between our company and IBM but after a while of issues with the PS/2 that was dropped and other alternatives were looked at. Probably when our CFO saw how much it would cost to put those in every branch. jejeje It was a time of conflict between us architects and engineers and IBM consulting onsite.
The Apple II wasn't the first personal computer, it was preceded by machines like the Altair and Sol-20, and was one of three consumer retail machines, which include the Commodore PET-2000 and Tandy TRS-80, which were released in 1977. The top selling machine for the first 3 years was the TRS-80, and while long lived, the Apple II was never the top selling brand.
Gray hair. Organizations must look to compulsive, attentive, highly-educated youth to stay competitive. The greatest inventions, discoveries and businesses originate with the young.
You missed the very first major blunder by IBM. DR DOS was created by a guy in California who's name I don't remember at the moment. IBM had no experience with PC level computers and predicted the market for them would likely be less than 1,000 units, so they didn't want to invest the huge cost for them to create the software for a PC. They made an appointment with DR DOS guy to meet in California to negotiate a deal for DR DOS. When a bunch of suits from IBM arrived at the DR DOS office the receptionist informed them that DR DOS guy was out in his sailboat somewhere and wasn't expected back until probably evening. Infuriated by the DR DOS guy's mistake, they stomped away and refused to ever talk to him again. Another guy who's name I can't remember right now in Colorado, IIRC had written an operating system which would work on IBM PC's. IBM knowing that Microsoft had written software for Apple, they called Bill Gates to see if Microsoft would be interested in creating some software for IBM. He assured them he would be delighted to do software for them and meeting was scheduled. Bill called the Colorado guy and offered to buy his OS, lock, stock and all rights. At the time the story was the price ranged somewhere between $20,000 and $50,000. When the IBM Microsoft meeting took place and IBM made an offer, Bill did the smartest thing in his life and suggested that since IBM didn't expect to sell very many PC's, it would be much better for IBM to agree to purchase a copy of his OS, MS DOS for every machine they made and just buy them from him as they needed them. IBM jumped on that like a hen on a bug. Millions and Millions of PC's later, and all of the many clones of IBM, like Columbia Data, Compaq, HP, etc., each buying a copy of MS DOS and later Windows, based on MS DOS and later Unix, also made Bill a billionaire.
IBM killed IBM.
The answer is.... IBM
I remember back in 1995 dreaming of buying a thinkpad which had the same aura as MacBooks had in the early 2010s .
After the downfall, one CEO managed to rescue it by placing IBM in Service industry. That worked for a while and when I was in IBM the only thing I heard was "cash cow" and "20$ EPS" meaning management was looking at pleasing the stock market. RIP
IBM killed IBM.
Worked for IBM during this period in sales and OS/2 was a serious disaster, no printer support, no serious multitasking, you name it and really slow, in short a dog. It also had terrible management on all levels.
The other big mistake was allowing Microsoft to write OS/2...
The biggest issue was lack of timing. IBM created the Micro-channel architecture that OS/2 could take advantage of and provide extra stability and speed. They chose to release the micro-channel PC's before OS/2, essentially making a more costly PC with no real benefits as you had to have special boards for video, sound, etc. Allowing competitors to provide faster and cheaper PC's. If IBM would've held onto the micro-channel until they were ready to go with OS/2 (which was another mistake - letting Microsoft write OS/2, but that's another story in of itself) they could've said "Here, we have new PC technology and an OS that takes advantage of it, much faster and robust than the alternative, it will run on a standard PC but faster and better on new hardware" - they would likely have been more successful.
