Searching for Plant Fossils Less than an Hour from Chicago
#rockhounding #thefinders #geology
Not our most successful trip, but it was a fun adventure. If you visit yourself, we definitely recommend visit the fossil exhibits in the Field Museum first. Also, keep in mind this location is only open certain months of the year, and a free permit is required to collect at this location. You can get the permit and more information here: dnr.illinois.gov/content/dam/soi/en/web/dnr/parks/activity/documents/mzb-fossilpermit.pdf

#rockhounding #thefinders #geology Maysville, Kentucky is easily one of my favorite fossil hunting spots. This is my third trip to this location and it was well worth the trip! We ended up finding a whole bunch of cephalopod pieces and some of my best crinoid finds yet! If you do visit this site or any other roadcut, please be careful and be smart. #rockhounding #thefinders #geology This was just a quick detour from our route of shopping along the Route 127 yard sale. It was hot and the flies were biting so we only spent about 20 minutes here, but after the amount of trilobites found, we'll definitely be back in cooler weather. Thanks for watching! #rockhounding #thefinders #geology Come along on another rockhounding adventure - a return to one of my favorite roadcuts in northern Kentucky. You can use peaces of plywood with a peace of canvass material looped over the middle to put your feet threw. Like snow shoes. Thinking now days a peace of ratchet strap would work for the loops. I used 2.ft.by 3 ft for the slop we where wading over. But the peace of wood shes carrying made me remember that. That size would be fine for what i seen in the video.

Great idea, I search KY for agates and geodes and was planning a state map with county cut outs from slabs. Then, I could see how many different counties I could find material from and fill out the state.

I use the Harbor Freight double barrel tumblers. They get a lot of hate, but other than having to change a belt every now and then, they've worked really well for me and are a lot more affordable than most of the other tumblers out there.

That's so so beautiful, thank you for uploading this and going out and finding em! What's even more amazing is the cephalopod and bryos were likely nice and cozy while the ceph was alive. If you check out Baird and Brett (1989) and Wyse Jackson and Key (2014) they have a lot of details on why - the orientation of the little bumps on the colonies, and the fact that they're usually covering the full circumference when the exterior shell is all preserved (Also I've seen videos of living nautilus with bryos growing on them). It honestly took me while to convince myself of it, but most fossil ceph workers affirm this. This is so wonderful though! This video is epic.

I really appreciate you giving a tour of your shop. Your explanations were very helpful. I am at the very beginning stages of creating my rock workshop in my oversized single car garage attached to my home. But I’ll also be moving in all my jewelry making, weaving, lots of other crafting supplies and things I’ve collected for over 30 years, from a bigger shop out back that I share with my cousin and his big train layout. I want my own space that works for me. I need to plan carefully how to set it all up, like you having the correct size shelves to fit your big buckets. I want everything accessible cause I want to incorporate rocks and slabs into the things I like to make.
