Solar Panel Efficiency Explained: Get More Power In The Shade [Renogy 200W ShadowFlux Panel]
Throwing a little shade? not cool when you're living off the grid and your solar panels aren't producing what you expect because of unexpected shading. Whether from a building, tree, or even the rigging on a sailboat, shade can affect solar panels in significant ways, by reducing power output or stopping it altogether.
Renogy's latest solar ShadowFlux 200W aims to manage solar production even when other panels are knocked out. We put the shading claims to the test in a head to head match up between a Renogy traditional 200W rigid solar panel, and the new ShadowFlux 200W panel.

Renogy's ShadowFlux Anti-shading N-Type Solar Panel is the market's first N-Type solar panel boosted with ShadowFlux anti-shading tech, which enhances shade tolerance at the solar cell level. It also utilizes N-Type cells and LECO technology, with 16 busbars, which allows it to outperform traditional PERC solar panels even in shaded conditions. It offers enhanced durability and stability, with lower light-induced degradation, ensuring long-term performance.
That's a lot of tech speak, so here’s a brief summary in other words:
* Performance in Shade: The ShadowFlux Anti-shading technology continues to generate power in partial shade where traditional panels stop working altogether.
* Reduced Hotspots: In traditional panels, debris or shading can cause hot and cool spots which lead to micro-cracks within the cell, this new design minimizes this problem and contributes to a longer lifespan.
* High Efficiency: N-type Grade A+ solar cells are simply more efficient than P-type commonly found in traditional panels. Increasing the busbars from 9 to 16 means that the ShadowFlux Anti-shading solar cell achieves 25% efficiency - which places this among the industry leading commercially available solar panels.
* Environmental Durability: Using advanced materials this panel can handle snow, rain, and even small hail for decades (aka, ≥IP67 protection). The sturdy 1.2mm aluminum frame provides enhanced impact resistance.

Where did you buy your NH00 and NH2 fuses? I am having a hard time finding them. What voltage are they rated for? Thanks

@FreedomInACan thank you!
Can you tell me if this can monitor the state of charge on the DC home app I can only see volts, amps, etc I want an actual battery percentage and how much is going in and how much is going out
Yeah, I see your question, and thanks. The charger will monitor what's going into the battery, and it will give you battery charge voltage - but that won't show you state of charge. To see that better, a true SOC you can either go with smart batteries that have built-in BT capability, or plug in BT module, these will both connect to the DC Home app. Or you can grab the Battery Shunt 300, which you hook up to the battery (works with all batteries, all chemistries) and then allows wireless communication between shunt and the DC Home app. You can pick one of those up, renogy.sjv.io/1rLo3D Use our "CANLIFE" coupon code to get up to 10% off that or any Renogy purchase. Hope that helps!

Can these work with an Ecoflow Delta 2 Max?
For sure!. The input max for each solar input is 500W, so you're good to go. I'm not exactly sure what the Solar input plug looks like on this unit, but you'll need an extension cord between the panel and the EcoFlow. Like this one, renogy.sjv.io/gbYEyO (you'll need 2, FYI). First time viewer and just wanted to say how refreshing your video was. Looking forward to going through your back catalog and seeing future vids. Love ya work from Downunder.
Thanks so much! We try to bring a little education to the game. Nice to hear that it's still appreciated.
Should I be worried about the amount of bad reviews this thing has on Amazon?
Hey, thanks for the honest question. I looked at those comments, and a few of them are in the "axe to grind" category. Only one pertains to the actual product. And the one claiming to not work, "out of the box" was posted in March 2024, and we were one of the first ambassadors to get ours in July, so questionable. There's a lot of Renogy hate out there. While there have been real issues with customer service, for sure, we've used these products for years without any complications. But here's some feedback on this 50A unit. The key to getting better charging amps with it when charging LFP batteries is setting the forward charging volts lower, and the stop forward charging volts limit on the DC home app when connected. Once we did this, we found a whole lot better performance than we'd previously seen. We're hoping to get to making a short video about this issue, but we've haven't had a chance to get to it yet. I think this unit has some quirks, but still worth it for the power and the size. Hope this helps. Be sure to use our promo code "CANLIFE" for an additional savings on your purchase with Renogy, up to 10% discount.
OH, so it shuts off the charging, but continues to power your system? why don't you heat the batteries?
Yes, the battery will continue to deliver to -4 F, but won't charge below 32 F. Heating the battery with a heat strap, or heat pad is an option of course. Since we use this battery to power our 12V fridge when the temp is below freezing, the fridge isn't running, so we use very little power if any. So, charging isn't really necessary. However we do have self-heating batteries inside our trailer that will go into a heating cycle if there is at least a 4A charging current. This requirement prevents unnecessary consumption of battery power, so it only heats when charging. Check out our product test video of the Renogy Pro LFP battery. ua-cam.com/video/opRodMYk5io/v-deo.htmlsi=O0e7A5KOcGIjQC_A
The calculator you reference from altestore is linking to one that only shows battery bank size per month. It is confusing. Is the calculator you reference still available? thanks.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We've been using this calculator for years. And while their new instructions do reflect recent technology updates and will still get you there much of the easy functionality especially with regards to battery bank size and solar panel array has been lost. We're going to have to do some searching and update this. So glad that you pointed it out.
We've updated our spreadsheet to include a solar calculator like the one we've previously referenced. You can find that on our website, here. freedominacan.com/solar-sizing-worksheet I cannot tell you how grateful we are that you pointed this out to us. We're just about to head into RV Show season, 5 shows in 7 weeks. We'll be doing our Solar RV 101 presentation at each. Without you bringing this to our attention, we would have had to scramble! Great video. Very informative! One question if I may: will the app for the DC-to-DC charger allow you to limit the charge current from the alternator? I would like to add a single DC-to-DC that allows me to use the 7-pin harness (10-12Amp max) until I can upgrade to a dedicate wire run from the TV starter battery/alternator. I think there is also a case to limit the amp pull during idle and open it up when the alternator runs at higher rpm.
Thanks for the question. If I read you right, you want to be able to upgrade and boost things later on. We are pretty certain that you can limit the charging parameters within the app for both engine source and solar source. Once it's paired with the app, you'll just go into settings and then adjust the specs to what you need. Great idea, get charging now, and then boost it later. Good luck, and let us know if you need anything.
@ thanks a bunch!

Correction.. The older version will produce 50 amps. If you have zero solar. Why some people turn off their solar breaker when driving,. If you prefer. You can use a shore power 30amp charger in place of the Alternator connections. That way you can charge at night or day. This simplifies the extra cost of the #4ga wire all the way back to the batteries. Which 25 feet of 2x can cost $150.00 with fuses..As my alternator cost $450.00 if it goes out from over heating. So I can still charge 3x 100ah batteries in 6 hours. As i use 2x 250 watt BiFacail panels for a total of 500 watts. They out out 30 amps on a nice sunny day.. Which requires #8ga Solar cables to the breaker. After using 2x #10ga Y splitter off the panels. Be advised. If you have both solar and alternator at once. You only get 30 amps off the Alternator...So you have to turn off the Solar breaker to get the full 50 amps..
Our older unit was a 30A charger. And the work around to get full engine output on a charger with two inputs is a good one. One thing that's nice about this 50A DC2DC with MPPT is that you can program when to turn off the solar input when low, so you don't have to install a switch on the solar input. You can set it as high as 10A, so you can get the most out of the driving amps. Not sure that I fully get your 30A shore power charger idea. Please explain.
@@FreedomInACan They made a 30 amp and 50 amp version. I'm still using the older the first ones they made 50amp..

@@gazzamundo This is a preference kind of thing. While you can get a good voltage status via the the DC Home app and your DC2DC charger. Keep in mind that you'll only get an accurate reading of that voltage when not driving, otherwise the battery voltage will reflect the charging current as well. From that reading you can approximate the state of charge (soc). The shunt, however, will give you an accurate, real-time, soc because it simply measures amps in and amps out. It's nice to be able to isolate both of these components and be able to see what's going on. The shunt is necessary if you want to do that. But it's really up to you. Is there anyone that can do this in virginia? Im.not handy at all.
You don't have to be handy at all. You don't even need to do what we did in this video. Simply buy a reverse polarity adaptor and plug it in! We made this video a couple of years ago when polarity adaptors either weren't readily available or were very expensive. There are now adaptors available on Amazon that will switch the polarity for you, without having to tap into the wiring behind the plug. Here's an example: tinyurl.com/4232u4dr Best of luck!
Thanks for the detailed video! I have the older style DC/DC MPPT charger. The new one left me with questions about taking the heavier gauge wires and connecting the newer 6 AWG wires.
We're figuring out the engine charging parameters, as we have a smart alternator on our truck. We're really digging it right now. We'll be making another video about that soon, so give us a follow! Thanks for the comment.

You can run your fridge on a single charge for 10 days? Is it still the ICECO VL45? The website says that the average power consumption on that is 347w per 24 hours, so 28.9ahs. I get it, you're rapt it's giving such good numbers in cold weather. The real test is summer. I just feel it's somewhat misleading to newbies who may fall for the trap of 200w of solar is enough to keep you going through winter. Not saying that you're pushing this (far from it). I just know that I made the mistake 6 years ago of a 100ah renogy lifepo4 battery and 200w of solar and it was far from sufficient to keep me off grid in winter. Cheers.
@@SLORTA5 Thanks for your thoughtful comments. We really appreciate that. Yes, we're still using the ICECO VL45 that we installed in March 2021. It's been great for 3.5 years of nearly full-time use! We have seen much better performance than what the manufacturer's numbers would suggest because we ALWAYS use it as a fridge and keep it at 39 degrees F -- which is ideal for both cold food storage and optimum energy usage. This device could be used as a freezer, which will take a lot more energy. Their numbers are probably skewed toward the colder end and during warmer summer months. Even with the 50ah (640Wh) battery we got around three days on a single charge in the HOT summer months, and 4-5 days during the spring and fall. A lot of real-life factors will go into performance, temperature, our fridge temp setting (39F), humidity, shade, how many times you open the fridge, etc. Summer will be the real test, and we will do another video then to make a better comparison. But summer can also give you an inflated performance on solar collection as well, with not only daylight hours, but also sun angle. While we've been out in the south west in fall and winter angle played a huge roll. As you pointed out, that's why it's so important to size your system to where and when you'll be using it. ua-cam.com/video/0rz45sL_NQw/v-deo.html We always suggest having additional portable panels for those times, and also for the summer when you might want to park the rig in the shade and still collect a solar charge. Our 400W lightweight portable panel has been a huge help with running our mobile business as it keeps our Starlink, computers, and life in general running with virtually no issues. hi sister .. is it normall the temp of dc to dc 60 amp .. comes up 90 c ?? while starting the car
These suckers do get hot, for sure. 90 C seems a little hot. Does it charge appropriately? Does the temperature stay that high?
@@FreedomInACan yeah . charging very well . bit getting real hot
@@wellyzz4963 hmmm, as long as you don't see a drop in efficiency, I think you might be okay. Some folks install an auxiliary fan near their unit, but I'd keep an eye on it.
I have one. Sure, it's well made. But what's important are watt hours / day. That spec will determine what you can power / recharge. Renogy states 500. I get less but that's typical unless you're on a mountain top at the equator. How much sun did you actually get at the floor of the Grand Canyon?
It was July and I definitely got more sun than I wanted. Depending upon where we were the sun peeked over the rim at around 6:30am and was up until after 8pm. So, if we'd had it strategically placed on the back of the deck all day we could have gotten close to 500Wh, I believe. There would have been some interruption when we went into some canyon shade. But at that time of year, there simply wasn't enough shade! As it was we were able to keep everything we needed charged topped up. During other times of year, getting sun down at the river level can be a challenge, for sure. Thanks for the comment!
@FreedomInACan Okay.. I have gotten over 525 watt-hours / day with clear air and flat horizon but only under those conditions. May gig is to power a 12v refrigerator off-grid. The refr takes up to 480 watt-hours per 24 hour period so I'm about on the edge of it with one 100w panel. I bring a few power banks for cell phone, 12v fan, etc. It's the camping freezer that is my great concern..
@@runnernh I assume that you have a separate battery to run the fridge? This way you have some wiggle room in terms of charging. Some days you'll be back up to 100%, and other days you may use more than you collect. If you need a bigger cushion you can always have another panel.
@@runnernh here's how we run our fridge, with a DC to DC, that can also take solar and a 50Ah lfp battery. ua-cam.com/users/shortskBcJWUnjn68?si=g-GvAf2PuX_90RZv

I thought you need around 50 amps to charge 200 to 250 amp hour battery for a healthy life .
@@briandale8386 Not at all. It's more about the appropriate voltage to ensure that the battery can charge effectively and efficiently. Since the charge controller is regulating everything, even at a low amperage (e.g. cloudy day) the batteries will charge, albeit slowly.
Do you need constant wifi even if you have bluetooth to the batteries?
No, you can use this without wifi. All of the communication between batteries and monitor over bluetooth works when you're off-line. Wifi enables all the remote monitoring and controlling features. Hope that helps!
Do you need wifi if you don't want to use the cloud features? Can it just display everything in the van without?
Yeah, you don't need the cloud features to operate the regular day to day monitoring.
I regret buying this shunt, it's been so unreliable, it refuses to talk to the One Core controller, keep dropping off from DC Home, needs resetting on a daily basis I contacted Renogy support and was told it wont work with a non Renogy battery !!, then they said you can't use it as a standalone product and you have to buy a One Core panel to use it !!, this was completely incorrect as I pointed out in their own user manual it can be used with any brand of battery, I am using this in a second vehicle with a Li-Time as a standalone through DC Home and all it's been is trouble, latest is a red light flashing and can't find out why, there was a firmware update to One Core a few days ago and not it doesn't talk to One Core anymore, IMO don't waste your money on this it just going to cause you headaches.
@@-PORK-CHOP- sorry that you've had these issues. Have you tried selecting the data input on the CORE monitor. Go to settings, and then Data, the select the shunt to be the main priority. I'm away from my rig so can't get the exact wording, but give that a look and see if that helps. Basically, you're telling the CORE to only look at the shunt for data and not connect anywhere else. Let us know if that helps.
glad i come here thank you and the comments are good helpfull . i know how i will set my caravan ting i have worked out much power ill pull just had second thoughts on flxible you get me freedom here i come peace and love to all and the revolution will not be televised
It would be interresting to know how much shading area has an output of 50%. I have my 4 bifacial 120 Watt panels mounted (4m x 0.8m) behind an apartment building balcony fence (Almost Stealthy) and it produces 200 Watt out of rated 4x120=480 Watts. Not bad if you consider these panels cost (& weigh) less than standard panels. My fence has 9 small fence beams a panel and due to the angle of the sun horizontally its shading increases. Ofcourse the shade is not completely dark but is more diffuse because of the surrounding daylight and the distance (1 cm) of the beams to the panels. The beams are white and my balcony area is mostly white also. I charge batteries. An MPPT system optimizes the output constantly. There is no other way to mount these panels.
Does the new version have active cooling (fans that come on when the device gets hot)? Thanks for the video. Subbed/liked!
@@ozmanfidaar6311 No, they have not included a fan on this one. We're in the process of testing this one out and will provide a longer test video later in the fall. Stay tuned! Thanks for the sub!
Hi I've been back and forth with renogy support and this device was getting 180 degrees on a hot day. Be careful there is no active cooling
@livebrando thanks for the heads up, we'll keep an eye on it.
@@livebrando If no active cooling, it's a no-go in my books. I've seen people adding cooling fans to Victon units (supposedly a premium brand) and one UA-camr actually has shown how efficiency declines with the units heating up. I have a 15A Victron shore power charges, it does get hot and I wish they added active cooling fans.

Awesome, thanks for this. Is there a video about building your bike rack? I’d like to do that to my Scotty. Thanks 😮
Thanks for the comment! This has been a huge benefit for our full-time life. We do not have a video about the bike rack. We had our local metal shop (folks who do custom welding, install snow plow mounts, etc.) fabricate & install a 2" receiver for a bike mount insert to the bottom of the trailer. So we could also take the rack and insert it into the truck. A year later, we had them reinforce it the mount and it's worked great ever since. Thanks for the feedback. It's worked without a problem for over 3 years now. We learned some things through this project and there's some things we would do differently if were to redo it.

I'll see what we can find out about the LED light, it's not very intuitive for sure. I'm not sure what you mean re automatic on / off feature? Can you clarify?
