2021 a total beginner to pottery, but its been on my bucket-list since school age.
At the ripe age of 50ish I've taken the plunge, a lockdown creative learning curve and I'm loving every moment!
Building my own home studio, complete with wheel and kiln I've been on an incredible journey all-ready.
You-tube was a god-send for learning during lock-down, and its because of the community of sharing potters, I wanted to document my journey and hopefully join up with others in the same position as me.
Learn from each other, and share our successes and mistakes- that's part of the fun!
Hope you're interested to come on this journey with me - one that I think will keep me going way past retirement!

My Granddaughter Mila's first experience with clay age 3.5 - Christmas 2023
Переглядів 20716 годин тому
Introducing Mila aged 3.5 to clay and my studio in 2023 was a truly magical experience for me. I've been crafting with her since she was one on a weekly basis and have been amazed at her creativity, dexterity and desire to learn, to listen & try new things. She is a pure delight on a daily basis! In 2023 we started in October making her 'surprise Christmas gifts' for her loved ones. She didn't ...

Cant believe my studio is expanding to two levels, PLUS I also have a new, much larger kiln! Thanks to @cromartiehobbycraft8542 for all the help in choosing the right kiln for me. Organisation and planning is my middle name, I'm LOVING this opportunity. Come join me as I empty and convert the lower level of our annex building to become the new lower studio level. Join me for the KILN OPENING I've been looking forwards to and dreading at the same time. Was it remotely possible to mend my broken bisque pottery? Did my home made recipe of a 'Bisque Fix' work? Or has it all just opened up and cracked even more? Its not a LIVE kiln opening but the next best thing.... a premiere where we can all watch together and chat in the comments whilst watching. Attempting to repair my precious pottery made on my road trip with #ceramicsbyJulia. A shattered basket weave in over 10 pieces and a jug with a 10" crack. Follow my journey to see if its possible to fix these. All I'm aiming for is to get them in one piece and glaze fired so they can sit on my memory shelf purely as decoration. Its a labour of love, but an experiment to see just how much is it...

Thank you 😊 so excited
I've wanted one for ages, I'll be interested to see how you get on with it before I make a decision to buy. X
Took us some time to locate one in the UK, ended up being shipped from US. Excited to get stuck in and see what I can do with it. Will.track my journey, fails and all. Hopefully some successes lol
So happy you have your desired results!
Thankyou it was a very nervous kiln opening lol
I’ve really been wanting to see how this works! Can’t wait to see what you do with it.
Me too! Took months to find a way to buy in the UK, but excited to start playing soon. They look amazing, but time will tell how easy they are to use;)
Fantastic memories for you, I have great grandies ranging from 1 yr to 19 years but they don't seem interested in pottery or painting at the moment, maybe in the future. Cheers from Aus.
Awh that's a shame, but you're either creative and crafty or it's not your thing. Maybe with time.... I'm so lucky Mila loves to craft, the times we are together are very special and memories to treasure forever xxx
Oh wow 😮you have been busy! Can’t wait to see the new set up 😍 wish I had just a little of your talent xx
Jo you're amazingly talented and do georgous crafts! Been a busy few weeks and can't wait to get back in the studio to play clay. A play date must be on the cards in the new year! Xxx
Love it. Congrats Jeanette with your new studio.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
@Skarande-1 thanks so much, really excited for the future possibilities 🥰
@FarForestCeramics you are welcome. I think for sure many wonderful pieces from you. 👋
Omggg too cute!!! Well done! She loved doing that!
@@mudmagic407 my little treasure 🥰, so proud of her xxx she adores crafting. Working on this year's project now 😉
Nawwww! So, so sweet! She is adorable and those ornaments are gorgeous!
@@janesshoeboxstudio5829 I am totally biased, but didn't she do amazing!!!
Too friggin adorable. Such a wonderful activity for you both. I was going to get some bisque pieces for my grand children to paint with underglaze. Enjoyed watching this
@MeandmyfireflyEZCreations I enjoyed watching it again before posting ( a year after she finished this activity) she's is now one year older and we're working on the 2024 project which I hope to share with you in the new year. So damned cute! She is such a sweetheart. Xxx
@FarForestCeramics they grow up so fast my grandchildren are 7 and 5 in December
@MeandmyfireflyEZCreations don't they grown-up too quickly! Love this age!
OMG MY DEAR SWEET FRIEND!! This literally made me cry!! Mika is sooo beautiful and sweet!! I absolutely LOVE the patience and kindness you have with her. I was hoping to be a grandmother around this time but it wasn’t to be I guess. Those little tiny fingerprints will always be there and the memories as well. I just love this!! Thanks so much for sharing. And I loved the WOW when you showed her the hearts. Sooo cool. ❤
@micheledickey4066 isn't she just the sweetest! I am totally biased I know but I am never failed to be impressed by her creative abilities, her listening and learning focus and the sheer delight in her excitement and wonder. She calls them 'Nanna and Mila craft days' and when she visits always ask, can we do crafts today Nanna ❤️ melts my heart!
Mila is amazing!! She is definitely going to be an artsy girl - she picked each step up so easily and stuck with it longer than most 3.5 year olds would 🥰💕
@laneyscraftingcreations431 she never fails to impress me with her crafting and desire to always learn more, but she listens to instructions so avidly and then tries to put into practice. Very dedicated to the project and she kept it a secret for 4 weeks from all the family too! That surprised me even more lol
Wow, that was fun to watch. I'm very impressed with Mila's ability to focus and complete all those at that age. Bravo!
@anniecannistra3870 I'm totally biased, but thank you. I'm impressed at her staying power and the focus too, at such a young age. She remembered every week she came " are we doing the secret today nanna, is it cooked yet?" Bless her 🥰
Love this! I need to do it with my grandgirls! We plan on making Santa cookie plates with them.
It was such a special experience for us both. Santa cookie plates sound a wonderful idea! Would love to see photos when you've done them, what a great idea!
I am so excited for you! Happy creation days🎉to🎉come!
Thankyou - really looking forwards to getting my hands back into clay soon :)
Congratulations Janette. It looks awesome. All that organisation is just up your street...again Well done!!!❤
Thankyou, I had an absolute blast planning how to lay it all out, hilarious! LOL
🤗@@FarForestCeramics
Oh wow Jeanette that was an amazing video! U r so clever! I’m so jealous of all u potters w yr huge studios!!
Thanks Nat, It was so much fun to plan how to spread across two floors, now I have oodles of extra space I'm trying to decide how to fill LOL Super happy and feel very lucky. Excited to be able to try some larger pieces now I have a bit more kiln space too. My hubby will never see me at this rate LOL x
@@FarForestCeramicshahaha u will fill it in no time!
Oh how wonderful for you getting all these wonderful birthday gifts. Unfortunately no hubby for me, so I'm a little envious that I can't be spoilt like this😊. Have fun and look forward to all your new videos in your new work space. Happy potting
@@MeandmyfireflyEZCreations I do count myself exceptionally lucky 🥰 Nothing to stop you spoiling yourself sometimes too, you're worth it xx thanks for the support and lovely message. So looking forwards to working in the new space and creating again 🙂
Wow my friend you have been busy! Looking amazing- love the wall decals. ❤
@@thepotterycorner Still a work in progress but loving how it all feels so far, being able to have the door open on sunny days and do Raku on the courtyard outside hopefully. 🥰
Oh my goodness!! How exciting Janette!! Talk about pottery career goals, wow! I am dying to get a bigger studio and start running my workshops for myself rather than the ones I am doing for a company at the moment. I am so excited for you. You have just sparked me to reach for my dreams again. Thank you xx
Oh how wonderful! I really do appreciate how lucky I am, and want to make the most of the space I have and hopefully share the fun of clay with others very soon. Whilst I am now retired my brain still needs the stimulation and this is certainly doing that lol xx
So excited for you Jeanette, we have recently moved to be closer to family and my studio is now half the size of my old one, so planning an extension. Hoping to get a front loader kiln next year to make loading easier (must be getting old). Looking forward to more great video's from you. Cheers from a rather hot and steamy Western Australia.
We moved back to be close to family early 2021 and was best decision we made ever. Im sure you will make your space work amazing, and and extension will make it awesome! You're making me jealous with the 'hot and steamy Australia' ive just woken to snow lol ❤'
Looking forwards to a klin opening with Blaze. Missed you!
Awh thankyou. Been alot going on this end so not had as much time to edit footage and post. Hoping to get back up to speed soon.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this! Looking forwards to seeing the studio tour when its all done! Thanks for sharing with us :)
You're welcome! I'm looking forwards to getting back to playing with clay LOL
Wow Jeanette what a fantastic followe video, your new space is amazing!! Loving Blaze, I originally wanted a Skutt. You have been super busy but it looks stunning!! ❤❤❤
Love the glazing wall, you have so many!! I have done a little space makeover too, which is still ongoing❤❤❤
And look at you with your cricut!! WOW 😮 I have been looking at bundles since you said about yours but haven't taken the plunge yet❤❤❤
Totally loving the Skutt, the extra capacity is exciting me with the possibilities. Blaze cools down to 40degrees in 8 hours versus Bella taking 24hours (if I dont crack the lid on either on them). So my patience is not being tested as much waiting with Blaze LOL. Still adore Bella though!
@@ceramicsbyjulia8552 Ooooh looking forwards to seeing your makeover too. I was shocked when I collated them all on one wall myself! So much easier to find each glaze like this Im finding and occupying a space that was unable to be used for anything else really.
@@ceramicsbyjulia8552 I've only had a go twice with it (due to lack of time) and it was so easy! Cant wait to start making the paper stencils too with it. Trying to decide which software to sign up to, as mixed opinions when Im researching. Hoping others may be able to help me. But was able to use my own .png file to make my logo. Working with the free software initially until I get the hang of it more. The bundle Mark found me was such a great find. So many free vinyls, tools and accessories! Looking forwards to trying Emily Rowleys techniques with this too :)
This is so exciting. I can't wait to see your next kiln unload in the new space.
Thankyou, really enjoyed the process but now missing playing with clay and cant wait to get back to it :)
So awesome Jeanette! Very jealous of your beautiful space. Anxious to see the amazing work that will be coming out of it
Thankyou! Looking forwards to being able to make taller and wider pieces now too :)
OMG!!!! I can’t imagine the screaming and squeeling that happened when that truck came to your house!!! I am BEYOND HAPPY FOR YOU!! Wow those lights are amazing!! I need all new lights in my garage!! Oooh I LOVE THE WAY YOU COVERED THE SHELVES!! They look great and will be soo easy to clean!!!! May I ask how you got the vinyl to stick to the shelves? WOW THE GLAZE SHELVES!! WOW they sure cut them well don’t they!! What?? You did soo well with all the Cricut stuff!! The signs look amazing!!! The one outside sure does make it official doesn’t it!! Aaaah!!! I am sooo happy for you! Lots of work but so darn worth it for sure. I just put up wall shelving above my workbench in the garage and it changed everything!!! Now to get the plastic up to patrician off my area in the garage for the winter so I don’t have to heat the entire garage this winter. Can’t wait to see how you organize everything in your two spaces now!!!
@micheledickey4066 awhhh I always adore your replies, I can feel your enthusiasm and support through everything you write. I'm so exceptionally lucky and been engrossed the last 4 weeks working on the studio expansion. I love everything organised and methodical so spent a lot of time planning it. I can explain my thinking on a follow up studio tour video I'll do over the coming days. The plastic tablecloth has worked so well! Didn't cost much either. I literally just sellotaped the edges so they are sealed. Worked a treat on the PVC, hard to get the sellotape off! Time will tell how durable it is over time. Can't wait to play more with the cricut on pottery with vinyl and paper stencils. The brain is in overload! Lol xxx
@ Aaw Jeanette that’s so sweet of you to say!!! ❤️ I love your enthusiasm as well!! I become incredibly engrossed in things that I’m excited about. Can’t think of anything else! I know you’ll use every inch of space and it will be as efficient as it possibly can be! lol. Seriously can’t wait to see what you come up with. I’m so glad your hubby spoils you too. I have an amazing hubby too and that makes such a huge difference when you have that kind of support!!
@@micheledickey4066 Absolutely agree! He started me on this journey and sees how much pleasure and happiness it brings me, so incredibly supportive and encouraging. Feel exceptionally lucky to have this space, looking forwards to hosting some workshops and sharing the studio with other :)
@ That’s amazing!!
Oh my gosh I love this!! Please share your glaze combo!!
😢good luck
You can re3pair some bisque with "mend a friend" from Bath Potters. the only think is it doesnt take glaze well so leaves marks.
Thankyou. The mixture I made in th3 follow up video worked absolutely fantastically! I was shocked. Good to know you can repair some things when absolutely desperate!
Nice save!
Quite a nice surprise!
Love this!!!!
Thankyou
You had me in happy tears for you. I am so pleased you were able to save your special pieces.
@@janesshoeboxstudio5829 awh thankyou! I was so incredibly relieved! Didn't expect it to work at all, let alone as good as it did!!!
Hope you had a great birthday. I loved the jug you made with Julia ❤. I only hand build. I have difficulty in making templates. I’ve never been mathematical 🙁🤪. Can you tell me what sort of shape I need to do to get that lovely bulbous jug and spout. Thanks Jeanette ❤
@jeanettesherratt1276 Hello fellow Jeanette! The just was made from a clip cast mould but it was hand built not slip cast. I've not done much hand building I'm afraid. If you checkout part 1 of the playlist 'When Far Forest Ceramics met Ceramics by Julia' you will follow us as we make it from a slipcast mould. Sorry I couldn't be more help on this occasion.
Oh Jeanette I’ve been wanting to do this with some slipcasting pieces!! It’s sooo beautiful!! ❤
@micheledickey4066 I've not done slipcasting yet but I do this on pieces I've just thrown being very gentle with the pressure lol. It feels so glorious to do!
Well retired...Congratulations!!!There will be NO stopping you. The repairs were really impressive. I love these techniques and colour on the jug. ❤❤
@janlewis9099 Thanks Jan, Retirement not taking too much getting used to lol , especially with so many things I want to do! The repairs shocked me if I'm honest! Never thought that possible and I'm keen to explore the new surface decoration techniques on other pieces. 🥰
Loved this video. Good to be reminded that sometimes things CAN be fixed. So glad it worked out for you. Looking forward to seeing all the things you make in your retirement!
Thankyou, what were the chances of success? I would not recommend this as a solution for all cracked pieces but it's good to know in certain circumstances miracle can and do happen! ❤
Doing the happy dance with you 🇨🇦… thanks for the fun and education :)
MY absolute pleasure. I was so anxious to open this kiln load, and with so many wonderful potters following this journey I did wonder if I was a mad crazy potter trying to save something when it should go into the bin. But for thr memories this was definately worth the effort and good to know what is possible when disaster strikes! Glad you enjoyed joining me on this path of discovery lol
Oh I didn’t realise I was holding my breathe lol. I’m so super happy for you that both pieces survived your amazing repair job. Happy Belated Birthday and how exciting to get a new kiln and studio space. Lucky lady
Lol me too, my heart was in my mouth and I can't believe how long I waffled on trying to delay opening the lid and finding out what had happened. Such an incredible relief, can not believe the success! Hope your little man's arm managed to be fixed too! Xx
OH JENETTE!!!!! I am sooo beyond happy for you for soo many reasons. OMG WHAT AN AMAZING HUBBY!!! Aaaah! I want to say soo much. I reallly didn’t think that was going to work but I am soooo glad it did and now we can all learn this! I love you so much!! Happy birthday, happy retirement, I forgot we had talked about that! And Happy new studio space AND KILN!!!!! 😊❤❤❤
LOL how lucky was I with that opening! Such an incredible relief that I was able to save them to sit on my shelf and the fact that there is a possibility that some things can be fixed! My birthday, my hubby, my retirement, my new kiln and studio.....oh mu words there is so much going on right now I can't believe I am so lucky. So many different paths I want to explore and there is the time to do that now. Currently in the process of refurbishing hubby's downstairs office into my lower studio, now holding two kilns!!! The electrician came today so won't be long till I'm up and active with the new addition to the family. Thanks for the wonderful support and wise wisdom you always bring, you're a 🌟 xx
@@FarForestCeramics AAAW!! You are so sweet!! Thank you!! I am just overjoyed for you!! I can not wait to see all the things you come up with. I’m trying to remember to be more active on Instagram so that will help me stay on better touch with all you do! HAVE FUN!!!
@micheledickey4066 we need you on UA-cam next Michele! Always love hearing from you with your words of wisdom. You love so much to share with us all xx
Congrats on getting a new kiln! Can't wait to see what it will inspire you to make!
Me neither lol, there are so many ideas buzzing around in my head! Where to start first ?😂😂
YAY!!! I'm sooo happy for you and that you were able to fix your pieces! We could really tell how upset you were and are totally relatable with how anxious you were to open up your kiln! CONGRATULATIONS!! Nice save!! oh ya...and HAPPY Be-Lated Birthday!! 🎂🥳🎉🥰
Thankyou so much! I'm not afraid to share how devastated I was, you put so much emotion into some pieces that it's heartbreaking when they dont make it. So this kiln opening restored my faith, totally shocked me and beyond thrilled at the outcome! Fair to say I'm hoping I don't need to attempt repairs as dramatic as this in future but good to know this homemade recipe works! Thanks for birthday wishes...feeling very lucky!
GREAT VIDEO!!T hanks for the home made bisque fix tutorial!! I have a few pieces needing a similar treatment so perfect timing! I'm going to watch the kiln opening now! fingers crossed for you!
HI Sarah, I was sure I replied to this msg but for some reason didn't post! How thrilled was I that this mixture worked so well! I've now ground up some leather hard clay and bisque fired it allready ground. So much easier to grind! The smoother the ground bisque the smoother the paste I found. Worked amazingly!
I am so glad the repair worked. I commend your commitment and love your joy for the craft.
@LauraSmith-q6c Thankyou, it was a high risk unlikely chance of success and 100% reward! So thrilled at the outcome!!!
Congratulations!
Thank you! I think ut was the most nervous I'd ever been during a kiln opening lol
Happy Birthday! 🎊 What an incredible magic trick! 😂 That’s seriously incredible that you were so successful with the repairs! I missed you saying you retired so congrats on that as well! You are incredible! 🥂 cheers!!
Thank you so much!! I feel exceptionally blessed and lucky to be in this position, and being retired too is almost like another birthday gift lol. This kiln opening was playing on my mind so much in the days leading up to it that I was dreaming about it the night before.lol still struggling to believe my fortune at how well my home made recipe of 'paper glaze' worked! Thanks for your lovely comment and support as always! 🥰
What are you and your hubby going to do now that you’re retired? BTW, I THINK IM JUST AS EXCITED AS YOU ARE THAT YOU’RE GETTING A NEW KILN! THATS FANTASTIC! I know your dad is smiling down at you. 🫶🏼💜😉
@walkerpottery9296-Natalie Awh thanks so much, I know my Dad would be absolutely thrilled and so proud of the studio development but also that we are retired and able to spend more time with those dear to us. Can't believe just how busy we've been since we retired, don't know where the time is going lol. There are so many things on the 'to do' list ita more a case of working our way through. As you can imagine pottery is going to feature heavily in my plans going forwards, always has been my therapy. But I love to learn new skills so whatever I do I will be pushing myself to develop lol ❤ Thafka for your wonderful support, I LOVE our pottery community!
WOOHOO!!! They survived! That’s so awesome xx
Lol,how lucky was that! Or more like a miracle 🤣. Pretty awesome indeed, something to keep in my mind that it's possible to do on viable pieces going forwards. 😃
Oh finally time to sit n watch. I’ve been thinking about u all day. Ok deep breath and play …… OMG I’m actually crying happy tears for you!!! Yay!!! Now pick them up ….. oh yay! Put some colourful dried flowers in the bowl would be so pretty. Now the jug and there’s an ad!! Ohhhhh it’s glorious!!!! The butterflies r stunning!! The lighter blue looks intentional I like it! Congratulations!! Again long dried flowers or peacock feathers. U r the queen of crack repairs!! “Who am I shouting too idk???” Hahaha too funny! Love the last platter too. So vibrant. Oh I’m soooo happy for you xxxxxxxx
Oh Nat thats so funny to read.... It was definitely not what I expected when I opened the kiln but I'm going to take it, thrilled!!!! I was quite exhausted after the kiln opening as it was quite emotional. Definitely slept better after that LOL
Congratulations and happy birthday. I'm just about to order my first kiln, very excited. Love watching your video's. Cheers from beautiful Western Australia.
Hello Thankyou so much for the lovely comment. Your first kiln is pretty awesome, I remember my excitement so well. Beautiful Western Australia sounds like somewhere I'd love to travel to - never managed to get to Australia yet - but definitely on the bucket list.
Wow! I can't believe you fixed those cracks! That is amazing. I am gonna try it too. I love the colors on the vase you made. And the butterfly is so pretty!
Thanks so much, I was not expecting such a great result. Helps to know for future what potentially can be done to repair cracks. Really like the surface decoration technique, and would like to explore that more i the coming weeks. Not usually my colour choices but love the end result :)
