An unexpected wind storm behind a cold front on October 12, 2024 caused damage in Vermont. It destroyed large tents and displays at a large arts festival in Stowe, and cut power to 12,000 customers. Video of the wind in St. Albans, Vermont just after sunrise when the wind was beginning to calm down. The strongest gusts came before dawn.

Far from the disaster zone that was Hurricane Helene, the storm blew off some high level outflow clouds that made their way all the way to northern Vermont. As you can see in this video, the clouds were fascinating - both gorgeous and odd.

After a spell of delightful September weather, a drenching classic autumn style storm blew through Vermont on September 25-26. Typical of our autumn storms, this one dumped an inch or two of rain, and created gusty The dark weather really popped the first signs of autumn colors. Though Jackson the Weather Dog was unimpressed. Skies cleared abruptly as the storm departed.

Before our famed autumn foliage hits, the early part of the season can be called Vermont's "golden hour." Sometimes that color is intense, with goldenrod blooming everywhere. Sometimes is subtle in a few early changing leaves clouds and the fog that greets the dawn nearly every autumn morning. Some scenes to enjoy here.

Among the prettiest of clouds is altocumulus, these little cotton ball puffs of clouds that create patterns in the sky. It's called a mackerel sky because of its rippling appearance resembling fish scales. A classic example of this took place recently over St. Albans Vermont.

We took some relatives up the Stowe, Vermont gondola to near the top of Mount Mansfield on September 6, 2024. As you can see, the day was gorgeous, and we escaped any wildfire smoke/haze. The buzzing in the background you'll hear is the gondola operating.

The first real autumn cold front of the season swept into Vermont on Sept 1, 2024. On a day that reached summer-like mid 80s, the front battled against sunshine of summer, eventually overtaking St. Albans Bay, and dropping temperatures into the 60s. Beautiful sun and dark clouds marked the transition.

Now that summer is winding down, here's a peaceful, pretty journey through my St. Albans, Vermont perennial gardens through this summer. Lots of humidity, heat, and rain punished the gardens, but I still got a lot of them to thrive, as you can see here.

Wildfires in Alberta, Canada, took a long route across northern parts of that nation, then southward into New England on August 15-16, 2024. The result was another round of haze and smog that partly obscured the Green Mountains of Vermont and prompted air quality alerts. The smoke was sometimes oddly scenic, especially around Fairfield Swamp in northwest Vermont.

A cluster of thunderstorms drifted south from Quebec into northwestern Vermont on the evening of August 14, 2024. While a couple spots reported quarter sized hail and winds over 40 mph, at my place in St. Albans, Vermont, it was an oddly relaxing summer storm. I slo-mo'd some of the quick lightning bolts so you can see the details of them.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Debby swept over northwestern Vermont on Aug. 9, 2024. It started as a drenching rain. Then in the evening, the wind increased and increased, and as you see in the video, things go from bad to worse. The end of the vid is the immediate aftermath of a metal roof blowing off a St. Albans, Vermont house.

In Vermont, on the last day of a long spell of Florida-like heat and humidity in Vermont, thunderstorms quickly bubbled and faded and kept repeating the process, as you see in this video. I missed the severe storms that popped up in parts of the state. But get the Florida feel of the day in this vid.

The distribution of rainfall in Vermont lately has been extremely weird. In northeastern Vermont, more than eight inches of rain on 7/30/24 caused catastrophic flooding. Where I am in St. Albans, Vermont storms kept breaking apart as they approached, yielding a whopping 0.20 inches. Thunderstorms in northwest Vermont on July 17, 2024 had some classic SLC features - SLC standing for Scary Looking Clouds. At least one of the storms looked sort of tornadic, but the storm was harmless, not rotating. Just rich in moisture and downpours. Still fun to watch, then I drove through one of the storms, then watched as a new storm tried to form, but failed.
