Pioneer HPM-100 VS. JBL L112 Shootout!
Переглядів 35 тис.2 роки тому
Testing out my new Canon 4K camera with the Sennheiser MKE-440 stereo microphone. We compare the Pioneer HPM-100 speakers with MV Audio Labs crossovers to the JBL L112. These speakers are paired to a fully recapped and re-transistored Pioneer SX-1250. Just having a little fun here on Father's Day, hope you enjoy.
Van Halen 1984 Explained - Oberheim OB-Xa
Переглядів 25 тис.2 роки тому
Giving you my take on how Eddie Van Halen created the 1984 intro on an Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer, and how his engineer Donn Landee put it all together based on what I've read. The resonance bass swells consisting lower 4 voices would have been panned to the L output, and the upper string 4 voices panned to the R output. Engineer Donn Landee would have recorded the L/R outputs on to 2 separate ...

Nice choice of music! I like it kinky!
It feels like the Pioneer's sound is out of phase...it's like my brain is twisted in my head listening to them... JBL✌
Great explanation. I learned a lot thanks so much
...& the S & H part at the end?
Added on a separate track.
I hear a little bit of semblance or a high "s" on the JBL. Too much treble.
These ab comparisons are tough because with varying efficiencies and frequency responses a direct switch over may simply be revealing those variables. You really need to readjust volume and tone settings. I admit, I liked the JBL's but if I could readjust the receiver the Pioneers might sound better. IDK.
so much lighter than a CS-80.......Yes, Doug usually had one of these onstage with him, but he also used an Emulator II and a bunch....................SO COOL, that you played the intro to "Take Me to the Top'!.....that was one of Doug's (few) songs that made it on an album.....such a fat, awesome and iconic intro.........
Had them both: L112's & HPM-100's, also had 4312A's, 4411's, the L100's, L100T's, L80T's, L5's the L7's, after a LOT of side by side listening challenges also using a recapped SX-1250, a PL-630 turntable with a SHURE V15VxMR cartridge playing artists like Dire Straights, Pink Floyd & Rush, I kept two pairs - the L112'S which topped everything else . . . and are my daily users along with the 4411's which are connected to an SX-1010 in another room. . . . . the rest of challengers after being purchased, went to battle and lost, were sold off. If you like Classic Rock with lows you can hear and feel, genuine clarity with stunning highs that are obvious even in this video on a laptop, and have the muscle to drive them, IMO, the L112's sit on top in this price range, and sound even better with a modest investment in upgraded crossovers.. . . my 2 cents.
Is that a factory preset or did you program that sound?
Not a preset, I programmed it on the panel sliders while A/Bing it to the record.
@ fantastic job! Sounds great!!
Crazy thats a 1 osc sound. It's massive!
@ yes honestly that’s the fattest patch I’ve ever heard. There’s no way ii could get THAT sound out of my Oberheim or my Prophet.
Beautiful example. Loved these cars back in the 80’s when I was in high school. Nice to see one in such great condition still.
Never spilled a Jumbo Coke upon a Speedbump in that? Reckless drive somewhere for Papertowels and something? Beautiful car in and exterior. Thanks!

Was almost my first car my boss was going to buy it foe me then we took it for a test drive and he said no way he said i was to young for a car like that and it would kill me 😅i was mad at the time but now i am grateful that i am around still 😂
the Jbl have a few more dB en give more warm basses because of it, all doh the voice of Jim Kerr you here much more detailed of the hpm100, also the synthesysers sounding better tru the hpm's . the hpm-100 is 92 dB and the Jbl probable 94 dB wich you can here offcourse. I have 4 amplifiers and 7 sets of speakers. And ONLY my ESS Heil amt 1a sounding better tah my mpm -100 and even with somme songs My technics SB-6000 sounds better. Is may sound stupid but every speaker has is owen personalety as each amp heve his typical sondstage. You just have to find the wright match between speakers and amp.
What ever happened to Keegan? I used to play drums with him in the band (Fluid) before this one.
So, what would a stock set of Pioneer sound like compared to the reworked pair of Pioneer?
Lopez Karen Robinson Sarah Brown John
The Pioneers get completely trashed by those little JBL's :D. There's absolutely no comparison.
Such a nice example of an 87 Saddle interior,Only 87 GTA had this interior color option,Paddle mirrors on some as well but a beautiful car
Really hard to tell which speakers sounds better. Nice Mic but I'm still hearing a live sound for a lack of better terminology. Both speakers are probably closely matched and which is better would be strictly up to the listener. I have several pairs of the HPM series. 100s are not my favorites at room volumes like I'm hearing here. The 60, 40, and 500 series are much nicer sounding to me. Those HPM 100 will get down when pushed and sound top notch! I do have a pair of the early Realistic Mach ones that I spent a fraction of the money on compared to the HPM 100s. At low volumes they're not impressive, but when you crank those babies they'll come to life!! I sold the 100s I want to get loud I go to those Mach 1's. They Rock!🤘
The JBL sounds much better to me. It's a much fuller sound. The Pioneers sound too punchy and missing in the mids.
That box does not show which gear you’re in. Even with a manual.
💯♥️Pontiac Excitement
I really need stickers for the face of mine. They're completely melted off 😢
HPM 100s HAVE MORE MIDRANGE. BUT JBLs ARE SMOOTHER
❤❤❤ I OWN 6- HPM 100s, THE HPM WAS DESIGNED BY A JBL ENGINEER
I make new improved crossovers for both of these speakers. You should compare original HMP-100 to original L112 to better understand what the original speakers did. Changing the crossover on one and using original in the other is no longer a worth comparison.
I figured that has already been done so I tried something new.
JBL sounds better for me.
JBL hands down.
JbL sounds solid!
Never was thrilled about the hpm. Awkward response to everything. Thump and sizzle.
My modified Yamaha AN1X sounds better than any expensive old Oberheim, and it does not just a jump lead, but a super jump lead & strings or brass.
Hpm vocal wins highs are not good
The dash looks stupid The earlier trans am's dash was much better
Jbl is better but ı want the hpm's
Awesome 👌
Thats the sound those speakers have. Paper cone tweeters and woofers is wut gives those types of speakers their unique sound to.
i dont like them, just removed the woofer. thats the only good part of it. combined them with tannoy mercury in a new case and have the best speaker ever.
Looks like I need a pair of Jbl L112. 😆
Wonderful Car !😮
A recent measurement of its performance shows the HP-100 has major problems. The woofer plays too high and gets a lot of cone breakup, stored energy causing massive ringing and horribly blurs the lower midrange. The tweeter rolls off far too early and is all but worthless above 15KHz. In addition, the driver placement results in HUGE phase problems and terrible drop outs in the off axis response. Additionally, the way the drivers are mounted and the lip on the edge of the box creates tons of undesired diffraction. And the box itself has horrible resonance to it. It needs a lot more blocking and bracing than it has. If you rebuilt the box, align the drivers up vertically, rework the crossover entirely, get rid of the baffle lip, toss out the dust cover, and add a super tweeter just for the response above 15KHz and phase align it with the tweeter, you could have a great sounding set of speakers. But reworking the crossover has proven to be extremely difficult because, imho, the woofer and midrange drivers should never have been paired together.
This is the most accurate A/B comparison I’ve heard on UA-cam, clearly demonstrating the difference between both pairs of speakers. People rave about the HPM100s, which led me to believe they were the best-sounding vintage speakers, even better than modern soeakers, as some claim. However, this comparison proves that’s not true. The L112s sound much better than the HPM100s. The HPM100s reminded me of Sansui speakers, like the music’s playing through a cardboard paper towel roll.
Mid range is more forward on the JBLs, but toned down on the Pioneers. The L112s smaller cabinets probably make them more mid-range forward. Both sound great and I could get used to the Pioneers…but I own the L112s and some 4312s and like them a lot.
Settings please?
Factory presets C4 and C3 on a split
I just purchased a pair and will give these Crossover’s a try. But! I am also going to just Re-Cap the originals and do a comparison listen to see if indeed a worthy benefit. I will run them on my McIntosh C22 and 2 x MC240 Amps running in Mono. I’ll report back in a few weeks.
Why do you not have the loudness on and the tone board on? Who listens to stuff flat?
Looks like microphone is in a favorable position for the jbl which makes it sound that much clearer
Amazing but a tad slow
Imho the Pioneer sounds pretty crappy compared to the JBL. I mean that something got very wrong soundwise with the Pioneer. I bet the JBL has a way better frequency response than the Pioneer.
Y review speakers that you cant buy and if you do find them they probably need fixing because they soo old
