That Old Honda
United Kingdom
Приєднався 19 чер 2008
Bringing old 1980's Honda's back to life. I am no expert, everything I know I learned from taking these things apart, I get it wrong, break things, try not to spend too much and simply make them look acceptable and be road legal. I spend 2 hours fixing them to get 1 hour of riding, and I like it like that. I do not do restoration (yet) if you want to see really nicely restored bikes go watch @true-moto-resto, I dream of being able to do what he does
Barn Find 1984 Honda V65 Magna VF1100C - Part 42 - Riding The One Piece
Lets have another go at trying to get a semi decent video riding the Beast *AKA The One Piece* , working out the kinks now, need to soften up the rear suspension for starters. Still haven't done the clutch and really need to do the tappets, but it rides great, took it up to see my dad in Sheffield (roughly 100 miles each way) and it ran great, getting almost 40 MPG, don't know if that is good or bad but seems about right to me, and still riding on that rear tyre that came with the wheel, bit of a deceleration backfire and carbs need balancing, found a small rip in seat and dents in tank, so stuff still to do

Had a nice weekend, digging into the V65 and did I ever find the problem....
When the Magna's aren't behaving, ride a Shadow, but never ride an 80's Honda in rain, they dissolve

Grumbling away to myself while I ride off the disappointment from the V65, first ride with new cam, no idea what I am doing, will play about with it some and figure it out, so for now, I just slapped the camera on and clicked go...

@dkmotorcycles - finally time to see if this engine will run, clutch seems to work at least it blead up and seems to disengage the rear wheel when in gear. Now to hear this thing run - hopefully (and then next we can take it for a test ride and check the gears, once I have fixed the brakes)

We are not there yet, still have to solve the Voltage reg wire problem, I put some really nice oil in, filter changed, need to give the fuel system a flush, check electrics, change out the positive battery cable I broke today, bleed the clutch, replace front brake hoses, bleed front brakes, get cam in cylinders, bit of oil, spin her up and get oil pressure, new plugs............maybe next time ...

Barn Find 1984 Honda V65 Magna VF1100C - Part 20 = sort of, not, but here is why
Man you shouldn't ride it with it not running on all cylinders. Sounds rough. And no power.
Keep watching it takes me a few videos to figure out what was wrong, now its much better, still need to balance the carbs ua-cam.com/video/dDgVbz8uqbo/v-deo.html
Better, but doesn't run good yet. Do you cleaned all jets (seemd particularly low ones) and small filters on carbs, change spark plugs, and made alignment?
Yep, carbs fully cleaned twice, then realised I hadnt done the small filters behind the float needle seats, bench set them but not vacuum balanced yet - not sure what you are hearing but apart from a very slight stutter coming off idle, bike runs great. Had these for 30 years so I am used to how they should run
Yes , Need vacuum balance, on full throttle it goes well, just on idle a half throttle doesn't push well. I had a VF 1000 and was way smoother. e@@ThatOldHonda
You have to service carburators , one cylinder doesn't work, definitely. Nice bike
:) keep watching you are right :)
Had 2 of these and had a lot of fun except for the poor oil circulation at the top end. Cam system had issues on both of them. Have a cool pic of my last one sitting beside my new (at the time) V-Max
Yep, I did my fork seals and cleaned it up. Next will be the clutch. Have a great day.
Thanks. Clear and concise.
I love those bikes. I have 3. It really surprises people how fast they are. Apparently, they don't look the part to people who don't know anything about them.
What I am looking forward to is finishing the carbs on this one, not balanced them yet or got the idle mixture right, once tuned a bit this thing may scare me :)
I have to say you have great patience ! It something I don't have. I used to work on my own Bikes but now I could not with out a lift now . Good video.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it
Bleeding those clutches can be real irritating. The best way that I've found is to use a vacuum pump on the bleed screw and pull it downward.
I came to the same conclusion, I just use a 200ml plastic syringe and pull the air out, works well
Thanks boss
Just great bikes.
It's looks like you know what you are doing. I used to work on my own Bikes but i have knee and back problems from age i guess i am almost 62yrs old . I have had Bikes almost all my adult life. Good Job . Good luck from Tennessee.
Hey thanks, I am getting there, end of season for me now, bikes are in Storage just got the V65 still out, was hoping for a nice weekend to do the clutch - but it can wait, thanks glad you enjoyed it
@@ThatOldHonda good job, looking forward to you doing the clutch side now, take care
When these Bikes were new i didn't like them but over the last ten years i have wanted one bad ! I am almost 62yrs old and as i get older my preferences change. Your machine is a nice one Sir . Good luck from Tennessee.
I noticed you've got steel braided brake lines up front. I'm getting ready to replace my 40 yr old lines with steel braided, because after rebuilding the calipers & replacing the master cylinder, they're still not grabbing like I remember my '83 did.
Yes, they do make a difference, the ones on the bike I need to change though, they were generic and the angles on the ends are not right. Also they are too small for the hose guides
@@ThatOldHonda Awesome. Mine's a "barn find", too. 45, 000 miles on it, now. TLC & elbow grease. Nearly everywhere I go, someone compliments it, though, so it's worth it.
Can you provide the exact part number please

Camera angle is great, like watching a computer game, sound is good too, bike sounds good and your voice comes through clear. The camera anti judder is really good too. 👍
The video turned out great. That old Honda sure can move!
Thanks man, it is getting closer to being done finally, but every time I have tried to video a ride, I have either had camera (operator) or bike issues. I am on the hunt for a CB900 now, seeing yours made me want one. I have a bunch of stuff to do on the bikes I have first though. I would be so bad if I had a shop like Brick House Builds, there would be unfinished projects everywhere :)
@@ThatOldHonda I hear you. I had to stop looking at MarketPlace because my garage is full and need to finish some projects. Brick House Builds does have a beautiful shop.
3 to 6k rpm I do love the sound of that motor. I rode mine all over California, what a great bike. Got too old to ride it but still wish I had it. thanks for the video.
They are sweet motors, all these old honda's have a whistle/whine when going up through the gears with a low grumble from the motor, gets the juices flowing. I am not sure how many more years I have to ride a beast like this, but these bikes will outlast me :)
Back in '83 when I got my first Magna, I was fascinated by the unique sound of the V-4. I just got an '85 five months ago, and that sound brought back so many memories. I've been fixing things & polishing things & I have it looking almost like a new bike. No trouble getting into traffic.
Our area is now installing round abouts. They work. Watching the whole video. I haven't made a video in almost two months. My Magna needs new front fork seals and other than that is running great. Thank you for your help. Decel backfire is lean. Traded a Rifle for a 1982 Honda CB450SC Nighthawk. Nice bike. somebody put shorty exhaust on it and it pops on decel. I don't feel like enlarging the jets on the carbs so that Other Magna Parts bike has longer Jardine pipes on it and I've already got it mocked up to fit nice. Going to start making more videos. I like that music track you always throw in. I could jam to that. Be safe on those tight little roads. Your bike is doing well after all the work you have put into building it. Awesome.
Yeh, I don't know how you managed without round-abouts, must be a world of red lights :) Get those forks done man, it's a 2 hour job and the V45 rocks. Mine is just waiting for me to pull the carbs one last time and replace a cracked fuel tube, Nighthawk is a nice bike, we need more videos, but I know the pain of editing and uploading, keep them coming
I need to replace a oil seal that my push rod goes through is there a way I can do it with out dropping the motor
I have come across this, the answer is complicated, it is possible and I have done this, but you are running a big risk, if you get it wrong you will be looking for a replacement motor case. Found a UA-cam video of someone doing what I found on V4Musclebike forum - I got away with it but I really want you to understand the risk if you try this - I dont recommend it but I have done it before very nervously - ua-cam.com/video/8ftSbVQhr0w/v-deo.html
love the v65, thanks for saving that one. will you do the cam chain on your other motor?
I was going to split a cam chain and use a master link, but as the big ends are gone, I will split the motor and do it right, but am not in a rush to start that until I build a workshop :)
We have a 84 v 45. And a 84 v 65. Both sabres
Nice to see them coming out of the woodwork, these things are getting a little on the rare side
This was my first bike. I really miss it. Definitely want another
Hell of a first bike :) don't think my ass would have let me ride one of these first :)
Just pray you don’t break that airbox on the carbs. 😭
Done that :( took a piece out of this one, you have to be sooooo careful - Don't do what I do lol or do it very carefully
@@ThatOldHonda oh yes broke it before. It was a bitch to fix
@@VoodooViking I got lucky the bit that broke off was outside the sealing surface, gonna just JB weld it back on next time I have the carbs off
@@ThatOldHonda also the boots on the inside are damn near impossible to find. I had to rig some pvc pipe to replace them. Just an idea if you ever need to do that. And I’m pretty sure when I go to buy another I’ll have to do the same or buy a cnc and make fresh ones.
We have a 84. V 45 saber. And a 84 v 65 saber
Nice!!!!
1:50 I have the same issue with my V65 sabre. Figure the neutral light out?
It will be the Diode under the fuel tank - they are about £15 from ebay (gen Honda ones are about £40) - you will find the diode under the tank in the wiring loom, black square plugged into a white holder - just swap that out and it will be fixed
Nice find. I have the brother of the Magna. The V65 Sabre. Had to get a parts bike for backup parts. Be safe on that beast.
Yeh, I am trying to be good, but when you wind that throttle these monsters really move :)
Nice find, They got good power, Make a bobber out of it to lose weight
I did consider doing this at one point, but I like the look of the original bike
I feel your pain. I have a Kawasaki frame with good papers and a whole bike with no papers that I am planning to turn into a operating motorcycle again. 74 KZ 400.
I'm gonna have say that I'm LOVING your videos and what you've done myself! I'm kind of bumming out as on my 84 Shadow I've added an aftermarket 7" LED Day-Maker Headlight from the standard 6.5" OEM headlight. The bummer is this new light mounts to the forks in a way that I had to customize somewhat so getting the front forks off mine is a tad more involved now which I'm going to do soon enough! Luckily my forks are not leaking at all but I feel I must do it soon! Laughingly I just got to the part in your video where magically the seals threw themselves into your bike haha! I can see how @Johnson0781 got a little bunched about that now hehe...all laughs aside I do recall 3 decades ago changing my seals in the day when we had no resources to things other than a manual and I did it so I'm sure we can muster along with at least a bit of video found here and there! Man I want to go riding along side you and your restored Magna, I'll take ya up on the "getting lost tour 2024" where we just roll down some lost highway till we end up pitching tents! I did take my 84 Shadow on a BIG TOUR to the USA recently btw and the ole bike purred for 1000's of km's with the new breeds no problems! LOL @ 25:33 🤣😋 I surely was LISTENING! LOL....ROLL ON!
I know that feeling, my V45 Magna is a little Frankenstein, V65 fuel tank, no easy parts swapping when you start making changes. I am getting closer to trusting the V65, engine gets better every time I ride it, then I am definitely ditching the mobile phone, filling the tank and waving bye bye, either Scotland or Cornwall here I come
@@ThatOldHonda Please allow me to come with you... I'd be so into this road trip.
One thing I can't stand is , The Reason I am Watching is wanting To see how you put things back in order , but skip parts of video, for i wanting too Get Educated by watching ,so i can learn ..... That Ticks me off . waste of my time . Sorry
Apologies, it was so hot my camera kept switching itself off, 3 or 4 times I thought it was running but wasnt - I am not a professional here, learning myself, dont like letting you guys down
I’d say take it as constructive criticism even though it wasn’t completely framed that way. There is a lot to learn in this UA-cam business
@@chrisrichardson7217 Yeh, I dont get offended, I like to think people may get some useful tips, last thing I want to do is waste peoples time. I started doing this for myself, videoing bits I was doing so I knew how stuff went back together, I never expected subscribers, really happy with the few hundred I have, that makes it worth spending a few hours editing each video and uploading, re-editing to add music etc etc, new camera, start of this I had only the rear mic on so it sounds muffled, I am learning every time I turn the camera on
Thank you very much!
Good day Sir. What is a fuel consumption on your 1986 Magna V45? I have bought the same motorcycle and did not ride it on highway yet. Thank you
Good question, its around 30MPG a little more if I am careful with the throttle..........hahahahaha why would you be careful with the throttle, I dont do a lot of motorway/highway miles, mostly small back road riding, so it probably gets better, but not the way I ride it
my friend rode my v45 magna and called it the animal then he rode my dads v65 and called it the monster
I have both a V45 (and it is an animal) and a V65 and I agree it is a monster, if you wind it on hard it bucks like a mule, either rear tyre spins or front end comes up and there is no stopping it, you just hang on for grim death
Yeah, I just check a rebuild kit on-line. They show the little baby filters...
Great, I will ask you next time I dont know what to do :)
@@ThatOldHonda it's an educational thing....I know you know. But not everyone knows...two things, one they are available. And a simple way to understand or help to understand design is to have a look at a parts break, down via online resources. I'm considering one of these bikes and the fact that they're almost 40 years old, Knowing of parts availability, is a part of the decision making process, for me anyway. No need to be sarcastic 😉.
@@raynic1173 Apologies, wasnt meant to be sarcastic. I am always willing to learn and I know I make a lot of mistakes, but you are seeing my learning process, I dont not post video's because I make mistakes, I share that - example, on early video for the V65, I put it in gear and sat on it and rocked it to turn the engine over - then forgot to take it out of gear, put it on its side stand, and bridged the starter solenoid with a screwdriver and it shot off its stand and crashed onto the floor and broke the indicator - but I then video'd me telling everybody what I had done. I am learning on camera, I need people to tell me what I am doing wrong. Some stuff I know how to do and have learned, others, I just take em appart and figure it out, so I do appreciate your comments and yes I do have the manual I use it all the time.... kind of, I like the challenge of figuring it out and sometimes I get it wrong :)
Plus CMSNL is awesome :) I use that all the time
@@ThatOldHonda now that's a funny story...launching it off the stand..oh my 😂.
Is that a hole worn in the top of the air box from the tank? Does it make wizzing sound..😂 😂
erm,,,, no and no?
Minus the back rest and mini rack, that is my exact bike-even the color
I am looking for a backrest and mini rack, I have a backrest on my V45, was thinking of moving it over 😁
@@ThatOldHonda I dont think the v45 backrest fits the V65, not 100% tho
wouldn't be easier to reference the manual?
You can try using the manual if you want to struggle :)
Did you install clutch plates and dividers or just "clean" your originals? Reason I'm asking is you were mentioning cleaning them and emery clothing the friction plates? Right on though, happy to see ya making progress!
Cleaned the steel plates with emery, replaced the friction plates
@ThatOldHonda Oh? Good to know I suppose as the kit I first time installed on Shadow had the other plates included, didn't know that was a thing that the other plates sometimes just don't come in a kit! Hey thanks again for all these follow ups good man!
Good work. On to the next part of the project!
For this one, next step is sorting the fuel leak which means carbs out again
Cleaning the housing where the gasket sits, acetone is a brilliant helper. Glue voluntarily jumps off the aluminium. Some details were left out this time (removal of the center plate, cleaning the clutchplates, close up old clutch vs. new ones and so on). Maybe nxt time and I hope I'm not asking for too much. I making photographs with my cell phone just to remind certain details were thing could get utterly wrong when forgotten or falsely reassembled. So, thanks man and have fun when letting The Engine work with new clutch plates. p.s. Autumn might be good time for the forks. 👋😏👍
I was going to hit the forks on the V65 today, but my nephew needed help with his car clutch, wanting to get the forks done this weekend or Monday/Tuesday as I am off work
Well this is bit comedic., Forkseal on my V65 also started to leak. Well when you post video of replacing seal, I can do a sneak peek how it's done 🤣
If you're able to get some, Evaporust is a phenomenal treatment for that auxiliary tank if it's been rusted like many of them do. If you plug the output line from the bottom tank you can use pretty much a whole 1 gallon bottle of the stuff and just feed it in through the main tank to auxiliary tank fuel tube. Let it sit for about 3-4 days, so long as the ambient temp is 18 C or higher, then you can drain it all out. Give her a good rinse with distilled water and/or diesel (I prefer the diesel approach, just to avoid flash rust) and immediately fill it up with gas. From there, you should be golden. You'll still likely get some crud in the filter going forward, but it should be WAY less of it Best part is, you don't need to remove the auxiliary tank to do it! It was a huge quality of life improvement for mine, since I wasn't fighting constant rust
I tried that, I think mine is basically dried fuel, it dissolves with Seafoam. Let me see where I am at the end of this tank of fuel, once its empty again ill give it another go. Spray foam oven cleaner seem to get rid of it best
@@ThatOldHonda Oof, good luck, then! Seafoam is a solid choice, so hopefully that does the trick🤙 Spray oven cleaner, eh? I'll have to remember that one for the future
Great update, Glad those people helped you with gas. I am looking at doing fork seals and the clutch. Pricey. I am looking at Barnett clutch pieces. Going to measure everything first.
Yeh, I got the bits to do my V45 Clutch, plates but not steel plates, springs and gasket for the case nearly £100 for Honda Genuine parts - the V65 need 8 plates and they are £15 each so looking for after market ones, has to be done, the one in there is holding for now but wont last. I was so grateful for those people stopping, I had also forgotten my phone, well in truth I never take it, doesnt feel right riding an 80's bike and relying on modern tech, plus there is a freedom to be had not taking your phone, maybe thats why we appreciate people stopping to help, if I had my phone I would have just rang Mrs Honda and got her to bring me some fuel, but with no phone, halfway up a dangerous hill with no fuel and no idea where I was or where the nearest garage was , could have taken me all day to find fuel, but thanks to some kind hearted people I was on my way
.... I could be cheap and take the clutch out of the old engine.......that could work or be a waste of time
That is an odd seat install/lock. Nice bike though.
My V45 (UK spec) has similar, it works just scratches the frame, pretty unavoidable
Wow! I need to go out and pretend to run out of gas. Maybe I can meet some nice people!
It made my day, turned a crappy situation into something cool - plus it let me know that the sensor isnt working, so I have that to fix too now
_True love exits ONLY between a mAn and his machine_ 😇 Looking forward to fork dismantling in case u do a vid on it. My VT500 engine successfully is back in. Troubles with the pre chamber comp. came unexpected. Same as a hole in the frame on the right where the brake lever and centre stand meet. Some hellish Pro did an exellent welding job on both parts. Now only some hundred bits and pieces are left to find their place again. Cool you've had a generous helper coming when the fuel was out 🍀 I'll gonna try that trick too in order to a free 🍦delivery ;)
I will video the forks when I do them which should be soon. Great news on the VT500, they are such a fun bike to ride, they sound fantastic. Which one do you have VT500C or VT500E, mine is a C, love the look too, its an awesome bike, the one I am rising in ua-cam.com/video/dA-A8sLOQOE/v-deo.html
@@ThatOldHonda it is a 500c 1984 built. Yes man. The fork 🤩 Cu soon 👋
Only if you could get a new larger tank and bypass remove the reserve....never lined a tank before not sure if I will yet but still they need a real good clean with that carb rebuild. American imports for me and they run some dirty fuel and it does a lot of damage for a modern country.
Yeh, I dont want to change the look. There is one problem, the reserve tank has a pickup none removable, so cant line that one anyway, gonna run a tank full through see how it goes
I have one of these my dad chopped up and custom built. They are great bikes
Reminds me of being 17, feels like the 80's, fun bikes
@@ThatOldHonda yes it is a classic bike i had an FZR600 1992 but i unfortunately crashed it couple weeks ago so the choppers back on the road and its such a nice experience when riding solo i dont get from other bikes
I’m currently working on a trike version of this bike , it’s a joy when it starts and works :-)
Nice, I can imagine a trike V65, you would need to tie yourself to the seat :)
