He's said that on several occasions. His playing on that song was an homage to Roy and it's there for all to hear.

yeah music is not a competition. It's hard for me to see Roy as mainly blues - I saw many times, he did it all. The most amazing players in terms of chordal mastery are Ted Greene, who wrote chord Chemistry, Lenny Breau, Geroge Van Epps
I'll check Anderson who I haven't heard, but I would include Cornell Dupree among greatest tele masters- he's doesn't play flashy but is the tastiest of them all, phrasing is always superb
Danny Gatton started out following in Roy's footsteps,and eventually got determined to top him,but Roy was his biggest influence. I used to see them both in DC clubs-both local,and know people who were friends with both
@renman103 I agree Roy is an amazing player but if you would like to hear the two all time greatest players of the Telecaster, then listen to everything on UA-cam by Scotty Anderson and the unbelievable Danny Gatton. It doesn't get any better than these two Telemasters.
James Burton! Not as many notes as those other guys. But it's not what you play, it's how you play it. Burton is one the finest Tele Masters ever, and one of the most copied of all time. His "chicken pickin'" and use of the pick and finger technique influenced many a player. Listen to his solo on Ricky Nelson's "Fools Rush In." The man knew his way around the fretboard. Or his classic solo on "Travelin' Man." Less is more; feel and tone are everything.
