    Very interested in knowing how often regulation uniform items were worn out, discarded or replaced out of necessity by soldiers on campaign. Appreciate your in depth views.

      I don't have any knowledge but there were a few interesting remarks of relevance in that book by Vaughan. One was the passage that I read out that mentioned the baggage coming up after the column had reached Peking, which implies that the soldiers wore and carried the bare essentials. This would have saved on wear and tear. Another passage mentioned a cart that followed behind the column collecting discarded items. One can only surmise that this 'collection' included taking equipment and possibly uniforms from the dead. I'm sure that 'make do and mend' featured heavily and also that there was always a local population able to provide services. I recall reading how Chinese civilians always dyed Russian soldiers white tunics khaki as soon as they arrived at the front in the Russo-Japanese War. No doubt they also provided laundry and tailoring services thereafter and that similar arrangements were made by all armies on campaign whatever the theatre.

    I've been working on a Mahdist War project on-and-off, and when looking at references there was an issue of contemporary publications taking black-and-white drawings/illustrations of soldiers in Sudan and incorrectly coloring them the classic red uniform, rather than the late-war khaki uniform (or camel corps' blue uniform portrayed as red), etc. It added a layer of confusion when I was first starting out.

    • @RalphAstley
      @RalphAstley 4 дні тому

      There must have been lots of scope for errors to creep in and more thoughts have occurred to me since making this video: 1. No matter how 'on the spot' and immediate a sketch it will always have been reworked somewhat after the event. Vaughan's subjects clearly posed for the artist but when were they coloured in? 2. Many of the incidents sketched by Cadogan could not possibly have been completed as the incident took place, so he must have worked up the sketches later. I'm guessing though that he coloured them around the same time, but then he would have been limited to his palette of water colours so how accurate was his depiction of the greatcoats for instance? 3. Many sketches that we see nowadays were published in newspapers and journals of the time. These were nearly always embellished versions of cruder sketches made by the original artist. The embellishments often involved artistic license so topography was exaggerated and colours invented. The original sketches would sometimes have been submitted by a correspondent or journalist, but many officers must have made a little side cash by offering their eye-witness sketches to the press. 4. Other sketches were pure imagination - for instants prints of key events in the Boxer Rebellion appeared in Japan before the events had even taken place. This was akin to the later enthusiasm to achieve a 'scoop'. Therefore it is wise to be cautious even of these primary sources.

      Thank you - likewise I admire your channel. I recently rewatched the wonderful Boxer Rebellion campaign you ran. I recognised some of the Legation buildings as being from Old Glory. Many years ago they used to do the same buildings in 28mm but I doubt they sold many as they were very expensive and took up a lot of tablespace. I had that issue in mind when talking about the footprint of the British Legation.

    Thanks for showing those sketches from Cadogan's Crimea. I have just bought a copy. Those Greeks you saw are the Greek Legion. They weren't all Greeks, many were Served, Bulgaars, etc, but they wore Greek traditional dress. Was reading up about them the other day.

      @@RalphAstley So my wife is Greek, so when I read sources I always pause when I find references to Greeks. I was turned on to it by a reference to Greeks in the Siege of Sevastopol, and then did some further digging. There is actually a Wikipedia page for the "Greek Volunteer Legion" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_Volunteer_Legion There is a history of the Legion written by Aristeidis Chrysovergis which I will see if I can get my mitts on. Unlikely to have been translated, but I can likely do that myself since my wife is a professional translator... So I will have help :) I have some Steve Barber Greeks in appropriate attire that I will paint up and use as a Battalion of Greeks. Poles also served the Czar, though not in a legion as such. The Fletcher & Ishchenko Alma book has many interesting references to a specific Polish officer who provides an interesting perspective.

    Interesting presentation ranging from Source Material to scale of game across a few different conflicts. As a quick question apologies if you've already covered this, but what Wargame rules do you use for your Crimean games and Jacobite battles, I think its just the '45 you cover?

    • @RalphAstley
      @RalphAstley 5 днів тому

      The ponderous rate at which I paint figures means that I have still to play a game in either period but Black Powder always suffices for me. In the case of the Crimean War I base the figures for Age of Valour. As for the Jacobite Rebellion I have recently purchased a set of rules specific to 1745. As I am about to reveal another completed Government regiment I will save mention of that for an upcoming video.

    I watched this video for the first time today, and hearing you talk about the disappearing D4 code, is what gives me worries about ranges being sold on, per my recent video. I just checked the Redoubt page, and that lovely vignette figure still isn't listed on it. This video is 4 years old, and it appears that the code was never added to the catalogue. An absolute shame really. But highlights the worries that I think we share about ranges changing hands.

    • @RalphAstley
      @RalphAstley 10 днів тому

      Andy Grubb of Grubby Tanks who purchased Redoubt (but has kept the website separate from his other ranges) has announced his retirement which means that the range will either be sold on again or disappear forever. He is a lovely chap and by coincidence I have purchased some more figures (for the Boxer Rebellion this time) and it has to be said that he never got to grips with cataloguing the ranges and synchronising them with the moulds. He provides an excellent service and rectifies mistakes immediately but there were a number of discrepancies in my order and codes did not correspond to photographs and contents of packs did not correspond to written descriptions. So, for instance, I ended up with five buglers and a single casualty figure when I expected the reverse. It must have been very bewildering when he first purchased the range and tried to sort it out but it will be even worse for whoever takes over in the near future. Great shame as I am very fond of Redoubt and have Anglo-Zulu wars, French Foreign Legion, Trojan Wars and now Boxer Rebellion. It's inevitable as none of us are getting younger and we all want to retire some day and these older ranges do not compare well to more modern releases and therefore are difficult to pass on to a new proprietor It's probably why Caliver Books take so many on - where ranges go to die as I have remarked many times on previous occasions.

    • @ZenMiniPainting
      @ZenMiniPainting 10 днів тому

      @@RalphAstley absolutely no doubt Andy is top chap. The club I attend in Canada buys loads from him, the Grubby Tanks branded stuff. But I am really concerned about the preservation of these classic figures. Redoubt figures are classics, and it would be a crying shame to have them disappear, or diminished heavily. Always enjoy dipping back into the Ralph Astley back catalogue, never disappointed!

    Thank you for sharing those. Those old magazines are especially interesting to anyone with an interest in military history and I would be rereading them to remind myself of forgotten history. You are lucky you lived in the UK when those were published! I had to quit subscriptions for guitar and car magazines many years ago as the US mail would "lose" magazines or the CDs that used to come in the mailing bags of the guitar magazines. I read the lore; and army lists for old Warhammer books, so I collect them. I like the old ones better! Then I can pick and choose which rule sets I want. I saw a UA-cam video about retirement that said, "if you read four books a year and live another five years you will read only 20 more books". After watching that I decided to read something every day and I do a lot of rereading!

    Bro, a question: how can I mark objectives that are airplanes? because when I press the "Tab" key to mark them, it only marks ground targets but never planes. Can you help me pls? :( 🙏

    • @RalphAstley
      @RalphAstley 10 місяців тому

      I think that happens because individual planes are not targets/objectives. The way to view other planes is to first go into chase view with your own aircraft (CTRL + F4) then press the TAB key for next aircraft (friendlies as well as enemy) or SHIFT + TAB for previous aircraft. If you press I this will toggle an indicator pointing you towards the nearest enemy aircraft. If you press CTRL + SHIFT + L this will toggle labels on aircraft but personally I don't like seeing too much script on the screen. Also SHIFT + T brings up the tactical display so that you can identify various features (pressing T cycles through Ground, Ship, Vehicle and Air). I hope these are the correct commands for your own system - if not if you press F2 you will get a quick reference of keyboard commands and can look up each command there.

    Thoroughly enjoyed this video and the thoughts therein. I read "Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World" by Jack Weatherford last year (2021) and it really cast a lot of light on a slice of really important history I never knew much about. From being merely a horde of "horse people", the book really highlighted some of the ingenuity that the Mongols showed, not merely in warfare, but also in finance and governance. Really quite remarkable.

      @@RalphAstley while I enjoy the more rambly delivery of many of your videos, I think there is a time and place for a more formal documentary style, and I think this video really highlights that. For this video, I think a sprawling ramble might not have been as deep and knowledge-laden. Might just be a case of subject determining form.

    Sorry Ralph for pulling you back to the past--deep into your archives! I was wondering if you might recall the manufacturer of the escort lancers you used for the mutineer cavalry in this video. I can't seem to find them listed by the usual companies. Any assistance you can give is greatly appreciated. Thank you for the countless hours of entertainment and enlightenment!

    That was absolutely superb, Ralph. I really enjoyed watching it (split across two sessions, just so I could keep the second half to look forward to a day or two later). 😊 You certainly took A LOT on, deciding to play such an engagement Solo, with that many ships in total & a Ruleset as complex as Seekrieg 5 - with all of its inherent calculations & log keeping - while also having to film, present & edit the whole thing! HATS OFF to you, though, 🧢🫲😦 because you made a superb job of it, & I found it really compelling to watch - made all the more enjoyable an experience, because of your beautifully painted models, the use of Litko’s excellent fire & splash markers & the all important soundtrack - that adds HUGELY to the immersion... Short of hiring a couple of film studio technicians to stand just out of shot & toss bucket loads of water in front of the camera… 🎥💦🌊🪣 it’s hard to imagine what ELSE you could have added, to make that “FILMED IN ASTLEYVISION!” Production more realistic! 😂 I can fully understand why you like those rules so much & you may well have sold me on them (I’ve already checked them out online & bookmarked the “Seawarstore” website). I’d almost certainly end up having to play them Solo, though, because I don’t belong to a club & I can’t imagine any of my Family or friends having either the required interest in the theme or the patience to learn the rules, much less carry out the amount of bookkeeping required during the game. But that’s okay… Solo endeavours can be relaxed & painstaking & one can pace them as quickly or as slowly as one prefers, taking intermittent breaks whenever one wishes & also returning to the action whenever one wishes, without having to curtail things suddenly, prematurely & disappointingly, because of other people’s commitments, priorities or understandable time constraints….. There’s a lot more that I could write, but I know that you won’t reply because of your decision to protest the Ukraine War by not commenting on your Channel for now, (if I understand that explanation correctly?). I imagine that you made an announcement on your Channel a while back, explaining what you planned to do & giving your reasons for it but, since I never saw or heard what you had to say, I confess that I’m at a loss to understand what you’re doing & how exactly you arrived at such a decision… Either way, it’s your Channel & I just finished watching this excellently conducted & presented Naval encounter & couldn’t leave this video without taking the trouble to thank you for all the trouble you went to for your viewers & to compliment you on what an excellent job you made of it. Cheers, Ralph & Take Care. ~ LOUIS

      As computers and laptops are no longer supplied with CD drives you will find the data on any discs you purchase for Seekrieg V are on memory sticks. I came to realise that UA-cam and other social media help normalise irrational and extreme beliefs such as covid deniers and those who believe Trump won the last election. When the Russian invasion took place I was outraged and could see that Putin took some strength from the complacency and befuddlement of Western democracies. Another channel appealed for UA-cam users to speak out against the invasion, but hardly anyone did, and my own protests were countered by comments (including some from people I regularly exchanged with) that justified Putin's actions or played down the enormity of them. Until Ukraine achieves peace on its own terms I have decided not to have any correspondence on my channel, but I cannot back date this to all my previous videos and must disable comments on an individual basis. This means rather than replying to comments such as this I disable comments, which then conceals all previous comments which I would rather keep. Therefore thank you for your kind remarks but please refrain from commenting on my back catalogue of videos as this will result in the deletion of comments that preceded your own.

    Long time no speak, Ralph (not since “Mary’s myriad mishaps” in “Congo”). 😂 Hope you’ve been keeping well in the meantime… These experimental animations are amazing & have a lot of potential… What a lot of facets you have to your creative talents. 😊👍 Have you considered using this technique for your NAVAL Wargaming Battle Reports, as they would presumably be the easiest to animate & hence not be too time consuming for you? Plus, they would enable key fleet/squadron manoeuvres to be illustrated perfectly, as well as enabling all Naval enthusiasts to enjoy the most stirring ingredient of many historic Naval counters: The sight of so many muzzle flashes, the accompanying roar of the guns (& the whining/whistle of shells…), not to mention the appearance of numerous straddling water splashes, to emphasise those frustrating “near misses.” Kind Regards ~ LOUIS C.

      Hi Louis. Good to speak to you though in theory this channel has 'gone quiet' as a way of protesting Russia's invasion of the Ukraine. Still, their recent collapse is cause for optimism so we can allow ourselves a small relaxation, but I won't continue our conversation further. Yes, I have tried some animation of naval games. Before I purchased this animation software I did try something in my game of Santiago de Cuba but it was very basic. Because their isn't much 'bend' in a ship it's not as effective as animating people and creatures.
