    Ever heard of a mordhau? Just grabbing the blade doesn’t show us anything. And any blunt sword can “cut” bamboo especially that close to the bottom.

    not enough evidence that the sword is blunt a bastard-sword wont cut even if u grab it firmly in the blade it wont go trough your hands and there alot of different kinds of bamboo for instance u have bamboo that u can snap with your hands and other bamboo that u have to cut with a saw another thing alot of inexperienced peeps think katana is like a fucking light saber compared to a europian medieval sword which is WRONG just try them both out and see for yourself you will probably notice that thrusting is the best with a medieval sword and cutting is fine with both a medieval sword has 2 sided blade while a katana only has 1 side or in other words u cant back slash with it

    its green bamboo, probably only a few days to a week old, soft as mush. try that same stunt with some older yellow bamboo. no way a blunt sword will cut it imo.

    What makes me laugh is the amount of insults in the comments, it doesn't matter if they're not shown to be experts, they're showing remarkable enthusiasm which, god damn it; we need to see more of in this day and age, as for the way they handle the swords, using Shinai like Foil or Sabre is very hard, It's especially hard to use a Bokken like a Sabre which is what I used to do before purchasing a Tai Chi Sword. As for them being stupid by not using protection, ask yourself this? In historical fencing, in particular in duels... did they wear protective masks and jackets then? No, they did not; the most they had were gloves and that was it.

    • @StormyWeatherUK

      This isn't a proper duel, are you saying that you can compare this to a real duel? That's a bit stupid in my opinion. It makes it sound as if you don't care if these Americans get hurt or not. Please don't compare "play" duels with wooden swords with real ones.

    In the offence/attack, the lunge or pass, the hand needs to be extended first, only then can the front leg move forward and the entire body is pushed forward with the back leg, meanig the back leg needs to be straighten out at the end of the move. As with most HEMA videos this shows bad footwork.

    • @Thesocraticbreed
      @Thesocraticbreed 9 років тому

      miroslav m In defense of my fellow ARMAteers, this was ack before ARMA's rapier program really started to take off. ARMA has gotten so much better since that video was posted. I personally have been training in the organization for about 7-8 years, and this video was posted 8 years ago. Its no doubt far better now. There is also now a knowledge which has become common, that the re is a difference between spada and rapier. Spada is like the rapier,but has a sharp edge thus able to cut efficiently. Rapier,on the other hand, is a stabbing weapon which has an edge,but won't cut very efficiently,but due to the common design, they're more stabbing weapons than anything... Which the interesting thing is that you see there is a highly different strategy to long sword and spada as well as rapier fighting. Spada and Rapier tends to have more stesso tempo voids as the stabbing and other techniques are done. Longsword starts from the cut and stab as well as binds and cuts as well as slices(cutting from the bind with a wind) and you see a ton more grappling in long sword combat. The reason why is because long swordcombat has more emphasis on cuts than stabs. Cuts bring the bodies and arms closer to each other so that when you bind, you see a lot more coming to grips in the truest sense for grappling. ARMA traditionally , along with most historical european martial arts and martial arts of renaissance europe organizations, train mostly in long sword...so, you would see where such would be lacking... But ARMA has actually become more sophisticated in rapier and spada fencing these days. I saw a video in ARMARIA where JC was instructing the rapier and did a really good job in form and all. I also looked at hte ranking system and saw that you now have "Free Scholar of Rapier" which requires things like knowledge of rapier tactics and renaissance history and concepts and all. So, ARMA is definitely getting there nowadays.

    Idk why everyone is talking about what they SHOULD have done and listing opening and what not. Being in a duel is not like watching a duel, this is true for all things from pingpong to wrestling and anything in between. And for the people saying their technique and footwork sucks, it doesn't suck and no one has perfect, text book technique/footwork especially in a real duel.

    Pretty sure that sword was actually sharpened. It's impossible to get a cut that clean without leaving tearing at the other side. Sure he rubbed his hand along the blade, but I've done the same with sharpened blades without cutting myself. It's not hard to avoid cutting yourself if you don't put any pressure on the actual edge.

    If his intention was to informs about katana misconceptions, he would explain that the great thing about the katana is not the fact it cuts bamboo (something unrelated to sharpness or curvature as is shown), but the technique developed behind the cutting (minimal effort and waste, quality of the cut, posture, readiness after the cut, compliance with etiquette, etc.) which is important for practitioners only. If his intention is what Eberle said then he did a crap job.

  • @jorper496
    @jorper496 11 років тому

    I don't think it's jealousy? I simply think that he was making a point that even a blunt broadsword can cut the bamboo, which again goes back to the physics of the weapons. Katana's and broadswords like I stated accomplished the same thing as a tool of war, but both did it differently. Katana's cutting power is a bit overstated IMO, but again the Katana acts differently in the cut. I think Christian Eberle's comment captures the intent of the video What is your background with a Katana btw?

  • @foroparapente

    Fighting ignorance with ignorance is....ignorant. Ignorance about katanas coming from an otaku teenager I can ignore and correct when I get a chance. Ignorance about katanas from Clements _in a katana video_ is completely unacceptable. But I suspect it's not ignorance, it's just an intentional usage of the intended audience's ignorance to gain personal advantage over the katana. It's jealousy.

  • @jorper496
    @jorper496 11 років тому

    Most people take Katana cuts at face value however saying how sharp and well they cut. That's what is being addressed here. It's not ignorance on his part so much as ignorance on the viewers part. Not doubt Katanas are very good weapons and are very sharp. But physically katanas and European swords do different things. Katanas slice with the curved blade, thus the sharp blade lets it just glide through. European swords while "blunter" are a simple use of a wedge + force.

    The objective of cutting bamboo with a katana is not to get the bamboo cut. So saying "cutting bamboo isn't impressive" is simply showing ignorance about tameshigiri. From you that's fine. From Clemens, and in a video...it's embarrassing.

  • @foroparapente
    @foroparapente 11 років тому

    But he simply know nothing about katanas, so he shouldn't be making videos about them, it makes him look stupid.

  • @foroparapente
    @foroparapente 11 років тому

    I hope you see the difference between a functional cutting of the bamboo in a harvest versus the art of cutting bamboo with balance, focus and skill. Evidently the wanker in the video doesn't know the difference.

  • @foroparapente
    @foroparapente 11 років тому

    If it were that I'd respect it. But he is attacking the fact people are impressed only because the katana cuts bamboo. This is sweeping aside the spirit of tameshigiri. It's as primitive as kicking a ball into a goal with bare feet and saying "see? Messi isn't that good". His grunt at the end, the running jump, his spitting the words katana and bamboo don't make a balanced effort, it's just butt hurt due to the reputation of the katana versus his toys.

    I just wanted to say something here real quick. Whilst I agree with many how hard it is to find appropriate rapier dueling, I must also say that the blades shown here are not rapiers. A rapier is long, slender, and tapers to its point for a more effective thrust. The swords shown here are more closely related to broadswords, which are designed more for slashing and hacking, as the fighters' moves showcase. I would recommend that you rename the video to accurately represent the fighters' weapons.

  • @makahuro

    do you know what blunt means? if that sword had been sharpened he would cut himself when touching the edges, that sword (in that shape) couldn't cut carrots without excessive force. but if he had sharpened it it would cut through that bamboo as if it was hot butter.

  • @makahuro
    @makahuro 11 років тому

    because so many people are acting like the katana's are the best and sharpest swords in the whole world. he is not trying to make them look bad, but rather state a point that prooving a katana is sharp by cutting bamboo is utter bullshit. and furthermore, you can get any sword or knife as sharp as a katana if you sharpen it well enough.
