A deep dive into Japanese underground music with Brandon Oleksy
Переглядів 762 роки тому
Thankfully, even when it comes to the music industry some things never fully change. One such thing is the mysterious, alluring nature of modern Japanese music, especially the alternative variety that is not often found on the pop charts. Its history is varied, complex, and doesn't resemble the stories of any other music scene. This is the reason why Alt77 has asked the help of Brandon Oleksy t...
An interview with Peter Bebergal, author of Season of the Witch: How the Occult Saved Rock and Roll
Переглядів 2963 роки тому
Yearly, there are thousands upon thousands of books pertaining to try and uncover the essence of rock n' roll music. Most fail, usually settling for funny anecdotes rather than suggestions about where rock's soul lies. Out of all the books written about the subject, few are as well researched, as readable, or as funny as Peter Bebergal's Season of the Witch: How the Occult saved Rock and Roll. ...

I collect covers and this is one of my favorites
Ano-logic side of your brain! "We have no songs and don't rehearse" Loose!
THELONIOUS MONSTER'S album, Stormy Westher is excellent.
THELONIOUS MONSTER'S album, Stormy Westher is excellent.
Jack Endino is a known jenkem addict and he raises weasels for nefarious purposes.
Saw him live a week ago in st aug. This man is my hero.
There's nothing in the video about Kurt's singing technique
Lol sorry josh klingNOTFLER have fun dying broke and unloved LMFAO get money brokie
Bob Forrest a life saver 🙏🏽
wonderful!
Jack Endino is a cool producer. He was lucky to record Nirvanas first album. He liked the band so much he asked if he could make a copy for himself .
Thanks a lot for giving the interview a listen. Take care!
Right on Peter. Performance is a casting of spells.
Bad ass cover!!!!!
I fucking love this dude
Jason!! What up brotha? Great fucking cover
This is one of my favorite covers though.
This is awesome
While he was doing it he was performing black Magik sending a curse to all his bandmates. Alister Crowley taught to have often and frequent homosexual ritual sex with young children. Boys mainly . You want to worship someone who was and probably still is worshiping Alister Crowley.
If music comes from depression n mother nature have u been to Seattle?
52:05 Van Conner on bass?
Jacks such a romantic when it comes to recording great interview man
John will always be remembered as "the kid" 😁❤
The Gun Club’s song called Fire Spirit seems to have planted the seeds for The Pixies. I’d be shocked if Black Francis wasn’t influenced by that album
Wow, as someone who went to both Replacements and Thelonius Monster shows back in that era, I’d never heard this story. That’s legendary stuff
Nice to see Bob. Back in the day, I’d go see Thelonius play at McCabes and Anthony was usually in the audience. Another time, I saw Thelonius at Whisky a Go Go and Flea played trumpet there. Great shows, great memories.
Compelling interview. Thank you for that. If you don't mind me asking, why "Alt77"? Where does the name come from?
Really glad you enjoyed it. Well, it was supposed to reference the term "alternative" and 1977. Frankly, it was a bet with a friend who suggested it would be very difficult to find a very short name. :) Thanks again!
Thanks!
Why does he feel the need to comment
Great story :-)
Great interview!
Thank you kindly!
I remember thinking at the time that it was the best christmas gift i couldve ever gotten at the time. I saw that post and it felt like i was on drugs i was so happy. I love Josh as well, i really do, but john is the guy for this band. Always has been. Ill tell you though. Go check out some solo josh Klinghoffer stuff and some stuff hes done with eddie vedder. That stuff is really really good. In fact, i think he fits with eddie way better than he did with Anthony.
Frusciante is the Mick Taylor to the peppers. He makes the band better.
That’s funny, No, Not at Christmas! , meanwhile so many of us were like, Best Christmas Gift Ever!
I wish RHCP would've handled the situation the way Bob described (Josh moving to keyboard, 2nd guitar and backing vocals) unfortunately I don't think John is emotionally mature enough for that. Josh I believe would've been. I feel they took on some less than desirable karma there which they should really think about balancing.
Thelonious Monster is terrible.😂. Thank you John for joining the peppers.
Dude absolutely not. Clearly you're not REALLY listening. Theyre fuckin brilliant! Check out "Try" "Anymore" " Swan Song" "Blood is thicker than water" "See That my Grave is Kept Clean" Youre trippin. Frusciante wouldnt think Bob was a "god" when he first heard them, if they werent good.
@@xavierrhcp13 yeah I take that back, I went back and really gave them a listen. They are good
@@markrosenquist8259 yeah Thelonius was one of the most underrated bands I’ve ever seen.
@@andrewferguson8032 seriously dude, Bob fucked it up. 😂 this is from his own admission. Most of the band were way over deep with their issues.
@@xavierrhcp13 so true. I became a fan of Thelonius in the 80s so I was used to Bob being a little overweight. Then one day in the early 90s, I saw Bob on State Street in Santa Barbara and he was super skinny in a really bad way. He looked so destroyed from all the drugs and I honestly was surprised he lived through that. Bob and Paul Westerberg are 2 guys who pissed away talent we could only dream of. They were their own worst enemies, but they defined my younger years and gave me some of the best memories
STRUMMER!!! Right on Bob!!! Looking forward to seeing YOU up on stage in the near future too. thank you for all the love you're putting out in the world brother!! 👍🤙✌😎
Every album they’ve made with John is a masterpiece. RHCP are easily in that category of stratospheric bands like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Metallica.
I agreed. But he was not in Californication (i believed) and is a good album. Just sayin. Cheers
@@raverave4667 John was absolutely in Californication, was his first album after rejoining the band following his dark period of addiction. However, he was not involved in One Hot Minute preceding this (Dave Navarro took his place).
@@raverave4667 John was the driving force behind Californication
I don't know why I thought that. So wrong. My bad 😔
@@raverave4667 he has left and came back more than once, it’s tough to keep track don’t sweat it
I bet john leaves the band again
Next midlife crisis and he will be out. Wonder who will replace him then. Josh will not for sure
You speak about one of the famous band on the world… they will find
@50:20 "I grew up pretty wealthy or whatever". Famous last words for EVERY Hollywood D-bag lefty...Yea, you don't say, so STFU about poor ppl, mothafucka you don't know me!
This guy did a great job of cutting Bob's political agenda speech at every turn and relating it to music. Props to you my man. Bob Forest does not represent most of America. In fact, He's polar oppositte to most of America in his Hollywood mansions from corporate money. You can say something similiar for most of RHCP but their music is undeniable.
Oh boy, I was w/Bob until he mentioned, "white privelage" FFS, something about CA. The government, who happen to be the rich white idiots) think this is a skin or Trump problem as opposed to a fucking culture and class issue, w/government, cops (criminals) sprinkled in...Quit calling me a problem bc i am "white" whatever that means (I'm not) I am also homeless can I use your record collection for pillows at your 3rd house? Ignorance.
Oh man...Josh as rhythm guitar and John and him with synths...damn. The peppers could grow new roots and throw new fruits.
God no
It would have been incredible. Listen to Omission with Josh doing backup vocals for JFs solo its pure magic
Yawn. He smiled blunts and owed alimony from his divorce. Ego tripping Fryshante. Can’t let another kid have a chance.... ego... drugs.... frustratee
Another kid got a decade with the biggest rock band on earth. Youre high.
@@NoticerOfficial Actually, IM NOT. I know who IS though... hint hint
Bob is The O.G.
Love Bob. I admire his honesty, integrity & unabashed talent. He's a musical genius & Bicycle Thief is the brilliant trifecta of Bob, John & Josh
Need the money after that divorce.
EXACTLY. And his..... EGO. #drugs
Looks Awesome, there should be a Big Star #1 record signed by my friend Alex Chilton, who I got T. Monster to open for Alex Chilton at Charlies Obsession thru Brendan Mullan. I would cry at night I was worried, but a week or two of making him coffee in the morning and picking out movies he might like while I was at work, then call and see what he wanted for supper, until his real special people called ad we were on an Aeroplane to the channel Islands, with guys named Flea, Anthony a real genuine guy named Bill S. And a kid with one leg! it was fun, I Had to pay my own way, but they gave it back after the trip. Sadly i saw less and less of the Bobster until I ran to the Royal Viking Hotel feeling pretty down, Bob visited me for the 1st time ever with Samantha, was I still a Fanboy and Bob could show his girl what a good guy he was. Anyways, that was his last visit, and he pawned me off to other kids! He once said I was duel diagnosis. And after I got some time and got involved with The Jesuit Catholics through Leonard Cohen introducing me t and starvation from o the Catlic Mystics, John of The Cross, The Carmelites, which ever, I think my problems were mostly female induced. I so wish I could hug- him & then tell him a Catholic Priest discovered The Big Bang Theory and the Expanding in all ,directions, even Einstein was made to look like a chump and yet he nominated -Father Georges Lemaître S.J. for the Noble Prize! The theory itself was originally formalized by Belgian Jesuit Catholic Priest, Fr. Georges Lemaître, physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and professor of physics Father Georges Lemaître from observations and theoretical considerations. Much of the theoretical work in cosmology involves extensions and refinements to the basic Big Bang model. Scientism is dumbng down everything! You can not quantify certain typrs of knowledge it is ridiculous, like travel, its like basing Love on purely symmetrical features and thermion molecules'! We do not know our own history, do not even know why we are conscious or where its located,! More people have been murdered by Marxist ideologies then in 2,000 years of Christianity! OVER The last 100 years, an estimated 300 to 600 million people gone daddy gone!. They got Derrida and changed the name from Marxism, as it hasn't worked but reeked havoc! If a Utopia ever did come about we would willfully destroy it for kicks anyways!
I wish they would have kept Josh the way Bob told Anthony. The musical chemistry between him and John is undeniable, it could have worked so well
@Andrew Peterson at least offer him that, I think. Also Josh has said he's not a guitarist (that it's not his main instrument) so I doubt he would feel bad about it, and Bob knows all of them very well, especially Josh so if he suggested it he must have known that could have worked. But idk, they're all good people, I imagine they managed it the best way they could
total agreement
@Andrew Peterson Would be interesting to read that! Do you have a source?
That feels a bit unfair to Josh who already didn't have much say during his tenure with the band to begin with. Since his departure he's already released three Pluralone albums (and counting) and is now touring with Pearl Jam and seems quite content. Plus, there's also Dot Hacker. A live guest appearance would be cool though.
@@hermunkulus that's true. He still loves the band and liked being part of it
surely the 60k dollar a month alimony payments from his recent divorce combined with absolutely no one buying his solo records had nothing to do with it
I bought all of his solo records and they are quite good.
Good for you. Johns too stoned and Ego’d out.
Settled for a lump sum of 1.6 million 7 or eight years ago-he can afford it.
The band with Josh on keyboards will be a very interesting thing...
Maybe someday...
It already happened in 06
Well, this idea of Josh going over to the keyboards and second guitar would be perfect, but then, how do you explain that the lead guitarist of your band is going to be demoted?
I think it would've been cool if they kept him to play Lead on the material he wrote with them and John and Josh have written together before so that would've been interesting to see happen with the other Peppers, but regardless, I'm pretty stoked about the new album!
@@danarnold5192 yeah I would of loved for that to happen
