ZX Retro Gaming including 8 and 16 bit
United Kingdom
Приєднався 6 тра 2016
Retro gaming focussed around 8 and 16 bit computers. Especially interested in Sinclair then the battle between the Atari ST and Amiga. The ZX81 my first electronic love.

Channel topics include:
- Tinkering with Sinclair ZX81 games, getting them to run on other platforms.
- Now the Spectrum Next Issue 2 has arrived will be messing with that.
- I played some 16 bit games on the A500 Mini while waiting for the Next and will continue.
- Winter forays into Z80 coding when the weather is grotty and frigid.
- Rewriting the unreleased ZX81 game Caverns for the Spectrum Next as a long term project with a view to porting it back to the ZX81 at some point.
- The odd gameplay video, though I’m a pretty average gamer - games that catch my eye.
- Maybe occasionally looking at some more modern games too.
With many of the videos I am sharing my learning experiments with retro. Hope you enjoy.

A challenging side-scrolling shooter in the ZX81. Marvellous!
ye, its a fun game for sure
Nice video, good work.
Thanks Ben
Nice game! Is it written in assembly or basic?

Wow, this brings back some memories. Remember using CP/M extensively back in the 1980s especially on the Amstrad PCW. For the time it was a good OS. Might be worth taking a look at Locomotive BASIC that came with the PCW (and possibly the Spectrum +3).
@@paddycoleman1472 cheers Paddy. Glad you found it interesting
MBASIC80 (or 85) - by Microsoft, is the most likely version you need, that was the most commonly distributed and used for games BITD. And, yes, between KS1 and KS2 the legal status of the CP/M distro files were clarified, which meant we got permissions to include them direct on the SD card, anyone with KS1 who upgrades to the KS2 images will also get the files - but the result is the same as if you followed MikeC's video you referenced, just a lot less manual work for the pre-setup KS2 images. -Dx
There was a game called "Merchant of Venus" by Crystal software which I rarely see mentioned but I was fascinated by. I think Crystal had gotten the idea from "Elite" on the BBC micro and tried a similar idea set on a single planet. The player would have to pilot his "lander" over the landscape to various trading posts and mining instalations to conduct business. This was easier said than done as it was VERY hard to land at destination without A crashing or B landing so hard that your ship was effectively wrecked. The graphics weren't hi res but they were lovingly crafted and if it wasn't for the difficulty curve in piloting the ship, it would be a pretty compelling game...
@@Rendell001 interesting. I haven’t heard of it but will see if I can find it
@@ZXRetroGaming I noticed an emulator site with a large collection of games you can play via the browser and Merchant of Venus was on there. Had a bash but it’s the “Lunar Lander” segment that drives me scatty! Will dig out the link a little later!
@@Rendell001 I found the game. Yes as you said the lander seems quite difficult to control. I kept crashing 😀
@@ZXRetroGaming the cassette inlay gives important hint about the ships - each one has different total cargo and the more laden the ship, the worse it handles! The thing that fascinated me as a kid was that on rare occasions when I could get to another trade post, each one was different and I wanted to see them all. I particularly liked the “oil rig” out in one of the plains.
Bbc basic? Spectra? Ulax? Vdac2?
Would like to have a look at the bbc. What are the others ?
@@ZXRetroGaming no they're all for zx there's a 16kb rom that has bbc basic the spectra gives you 32kb video ram and 18kb per screen I think though I get very little technical info ulax is more colours onscreen I think vdac2 is for atm turbo 2+
@ZXRetroGaming if u wanna look at bbc see if you can get a nula that doubles video ram!

Better to try MBASIC.
thanks for the tip
For a ZX81, that's impressive.
@@markwithers8341 yeah, its a fun game to play
I think less than 1% of the Amiga games were barely playable... I wonder if anyone tried those games before publishing it.
I've still got a huge number to play, so I'll reserve judgement
cool stuff, but you sound like you're a bit sad :( i suppose im just used to people being hyper energetic in these youtube videos. anyway good games all around. personally i dont have a single retro system (even though i respect them a lot) so there's just me and my trusty modern gaming pc. i enjoy a lot of VR games to be honest. but excluding those, i would love to get back into apex legends. incredibly fun game, if you like player vs player combat.
Lol, thanks for the comment. Not hyper energetic for sure, much more low key. I’ve not done much with VR so far, but one day I’ll get going with it.
wow when you were talking abt the next i thought it was some retro system, rather than something released in 2017! looks awesome ill check it out a little
it's what the ZX Spectrum might have become if they'd continued developing it
Very cool!!
good work.
My grandpa and I would have freaked, if we had seen this in the early ninety's, in the US.
A very nice vid showcasing many of the top games but as someone else has pointed out, please review SABOTAGE and also Kevin Tom's FOOTBALL MANAGER next time around. I realise these might not be from your actual recollection(s) but they are both very very worthwhile and playable titles for the most wonderful 1980s Sinclair monochrome creation.. ever! :-)
Noted. Glad you enjoyed the video
i always liked "Maze Death Race" and "Tai" very much.
Tai looks very good, will have to track it down
I'm afraid the audio is terrible, I can barely understand you listening on Smartphone. But anyways, congrats for the content :)

instead of compressing individual bytes, mutate the abstraction to count associated information. ua-cam.com/video/eJIp_mgVLwE/v-deo.html A sliding zipper/unzipper reads in linear form, so the joint probability is the frequency of a byte to the next.
Nice video. Do you have links to the resources used?
The decompressor was on uniabis GitHub, the compressor I think was from lz4 on GitHub. Will check in the morning.
I downloaded the compressor from here : sourceforge.net/projects/lz4.mirror/
@@ZXRetroGaming Thanks. I have the same problem you had where I need to decompress in lines, not all at once. My current routines decompress one character at a time. My decompress is slow, but efforts a lot more control. If L4Z compression is better, might be worth a try. But I have a lot of short strings that probably won't compress well with this method.
@@SafePit yeah I've looked at the decompress routine to see if I could get it to skip newline characters so it doesn't break the display but don't think I can get it to do that
Cool
That cloud triangle level is evil!
lol
Nice - as Boriel Basic has been designed for classic ZX Spectrums it has no inbuilt ability to target the next apart from the --zx-arch switch which enables some faster multiplications. There is a suite of tools that use Boriel called NextBuiild which enables you to control the Next's HW with keywords and produce NEX files.
Hi Emook. Yes I thought I'd look at that in a future video. I have heard good things on Facebook
Load some of my lowres games and see why the emulator needs an update. Loderunner, 8bitwars, K-man, Dropzone, Lunapark81, snake, Hidden picture etc...
Ah! Hello Dr Beep 😀, do they look bad?
@@ZXRetroGaming , you will see text on screen that is no text. I use hidden data on the screen with opcodes that will be a space on a real ZX81. This is an easy fix that is not on the current Next emulator.
Cool. I'm working on a little project with Boriel and NextBuild and I'm just reaching the point where I could do with some debugging, I haven't delved into the CSpect 'break' stuff yet but this has given me a taste. Thank you! Keep up the great work, these are really interesting videos!
Cheers Rob
Wow, never saw that 3D defender before. Flight Simulator brings back memories, it made me want to be a pilot!
Yeah 3d defender was a great game but not easy. I did like Flight Simulator at the time. Nice photography website btw
Nice. But why no sound?
My monitor has no sound, and didn’t hook up capture card for this vid
Thanks for posting!
Hey..Thanks for showing our game (TX-1696). This is only the demo, the full version is coming this year 2024.
Thanks for the info. It’s a great game. I keep getting a bit further with it.
Also if you use a joypad or keyboard you'll be able to do weapon select which will help a lot
@@MegaRockdemon yeah I hadn’t figured out how to do that at the time 👍🏼
TOP ! Thank u !👏👏👏👏
Bearing in mind it was a ZX81 with a plug in wobbly RAM Pack (caused more crashes than i can rememeber), and the year this was created, (It was 3D lets not forget!!!) 3D Monster Maze is IMO the very definition of a classic game. I used to sh1t myself back in the day as the T-rex got closer... When games where games..

Hi! Some how-to about? Were I can find the emulator and the game?

Games for spectrum next should be transormed for modern design solutions
What does that sentence even mean?
@@simonbutler-bq8yb Many modern zx games are made the same way they were 30 years ago in terms of design. Need to apply modern design ideas to modern zx games
