Finding A Line | Running Whitewater on the South Harris and Magnetawan Rivers | Part 1
Переглядів 2,5 тис.3 роки тому
I had discovered rapids on exploratory trips previously on the south Magnetawan River and the south branch of the Harris River. At the time, I didn't have the opportunity to run them. So in November of 2020, my friend Ben and I headed out for 3 days to tackle these rapids when the river was running high. We also lucked out on unseasonably warm weather on our trip. It was the best combination of...
Sleeping Under a Canoe | A Solo Pilgrammage to End the Paddling Season | Part 2
Переглядів 2,2 тис.3 роки тому
The weather continues to be incredible as I continue my late season canoe trip. However, despite everything going perfectly so far, I run into a few roadblocks. My first attempt to get to the next lake fails, the rough portage to the lake isn't so straight forward, and last, when I get there the lake has a big surprise for me. It was almost the perfect canoe trip to end the season, but I should...

An unexpected stretch of warm weather was approaching southern Ontario and I decided to take the opportunity to head off on another canoe trip. While deciding on a place to go, a friend who is an outfitter suggested a favourite route with gorgeous lakes. Being a new location and a place I wasn't familiar with, I jumped at the opportunity. I also decided head out without a tent and to sleep unde...
Thanksgiving Family Canoe Trip Debacle | Part 2

In this episode, I convince Anita to head back to Harris Lake to make the most of remaining two days of our Thanksgiving family canoe trip. The time spent there was well worth it due to weather, fall colours, and fabulous Thanksgiving meal. The weather did turn and we still had to deal with some other challenges, but overall we were more than happy we did it. Certainly a Thanksgiving we won't f...

I've got about 5 pair of traditional that are in good working order. I live off the esat end of lake Ontario. Tug Hill region it's called. Also called Snow Country. We've had an easy winter so far , 16 feet. Why easy? after the first that started thanksgiving night we had 10 feet when it was all said and done. Then it all melted and nothing hardly for a couple weeks. Then it started again. After the thankgiving storm I went hunting with my 5 footers. Couple days ago used my modern tubbs. Why? To stomp a path for my dogs. I also use them for adirondack chaga hunting when theres not much snow because they'll span ankle breaking holes and they have crampons. Other than that there useless to me. I don't do trails. I just tried out a pair of 4 footers that I just restorered. They are army issue Snocraft issued for the korean war. Work great and kept me right on top. I have two more pair of these. One will be restored as they are also in exceptional shape and the other pair will probably be wall hangers. They could be restored but some rawhide is damaged. Also have several pairs of bearpaws for in between conditions like crusty or wet snow.

Thank you so much. I'm in my 70s now and my wild river paddling days are behind me. My paddling partner and I had intended to run this river in the late 1980's but life seemed to get in thr way and thwart our plans. While it was sad to see so much of the river tamed by dams, it was still a grest pleasure to follow your adventure and to get to see, though vicariously, that thre is still unspoiled beauty awaiting adventurous souls.

Just today came across this video which brought back some memories.. I did this river with a group of 12 Junior Rangers(6Canoes) on/about 1969, watching your video only confirmed my memory of its harsh river conditions.. I don't recall no Federal Park office back in those days...I was working for the old Department Lands and Forests in those days.. at 75yrs, I wouldn't dare try canoeing it today... I would have been 19yrs old in 1969. We all had Cedar Strip Canoes in those days and had to stop several times to patch the canoes from rock damage with spruce/pine gum pitch.

Hi David, My friend Jm and I watched your series on the White River before we se out on the Upper White in 2021 and the Lower White in 2022. Right now, I am working on the video of that trip and was hoping to detail some of the sources of our information.. Not sure how UA-cam does this, but would you be ok if i picked a single 10 second cut of your video to reference your series on the White River ? No worries if you would rather not. Thanks for the great information. It certainly was a fun river to paddle!
