Green Giant growth: 19-20 feet in 5 years. Complete visual block out at 22 feet.
This is the last of the videos documenting 5 years of growth of these green giants. Five years ago they were small and spindly. Now they are big and beautiful. Planted 5 feet apart they have done exactly what they were planted for, to create privacy in what was previously a completely wide open yard.
Here is the video of these 5 years ago when they were planted. They were sold as 4-5 feet. I guess the industry standard is to size them from the "body" of the plant. The top of the runners were closer to 9 feet.
Here is video taken September 2018. All you need to see is the first 30 seconds. Simply amazing.

This is a yearly update. I have 3 other videos (links below) showing the size of these giants on Sept 30, 2018, 2019, and 2020. They were about 9 feet on the first video. They are now 19 feet 6 inches. That would be an average of 3 feet and 6 inches per year for the past 3 years of growth. Honestly I thought they would be higher than that. This is oregon and oregon couldn't be better for the growth of these green giants. Almost all of the growth happens in the winter when it rains, and oregon rain is basically a drizzel. In the winter it can rain 20 days of the month and only get 6-7 inches of rain. I have sons who live in texas and you guys get 3-5 inches in a couple of hours. So in winter the ground here is constantly wet. So yea, Oregon is all but perfect for the growth of these.

    • @gerryreeve3576
      @gerryreeve3576 Місяць тому

      I can't say they do much for the reduction of road noise. They will block out the visual of the road but not so much on the noise. Noise is a problem. I have another property where I built a cinder block wall to block out noise. You can't get rid of noise you basically just redirect it. Some prefer the strategy of fighting noise with a pleasant noise, like a fountain (very large fountain if needed). One strategy here is you don't need a large fountain to fight loud noise. Some use a smaller (inadequate size for fighting loud road noise) and then just install speakers, that look like rocks, and pipe in a waterfall noise at whatever volume you need. It works. But it is still loud.

    • @gerryreeve3576
      @gerryreeve3576 6 місяців тому

      I planted them 6-7 feet from the fence (if I remember correctly), If you want to be extra cautious 7-8 feet should be fine with no problem with hitting the fence. These giants are about 8-9 feet in diameter right now (at ground level) and are approaching maturity. You need to remember most fences are 6 feet high and the diameter of these at 6 feet off the ground is much less than at the base. I you plant them 6 feet from the fence that would mean that at 6 feet off the ground the diameter would have to be 12 feet. I think that is highly unlikely from the giants I have seen and I have seen a bunch.

      There is a link above to a video of when they were first planted. That will show you the dramatic growth over a 5 year period. But to answer the question directly when they were first planted the very top "runners' were about 9 feet. They were sold to us as 4-5 feet green giants. Evidently it is industry practice to sell them as measured from the ground to the "body" of the plant not to its tallest branch. Essentially they are measuring the height to the chest not the head.

      Of I did it again I would plant them at least 7 feet from the fence. WE should've done that here. If the yard is small then planting closer to the fence to save feet in the yard may make some sense. From what I have read these can be 15 feet in diameter at the base when fully mature. I have taken a look at how they are hitting the fence now and it is not bad. Just needs some occasional trimming as it hits the fence. There is not much overhang to the other side of the fence. The fence is 6 feet high and at 6 feet the green giants are not as wide as at the ground.

In fact the nurseryman we bought them from even sad he refused to sell any in the spring or summer because the lack of rain would end up in a great number not surviving. So we planted them in the first of October and let nature water them. Then watered them in July -October for the first year. But after that . . . . .stand back and watch them grow.
