Guided Meditation and Buddhist Dharma Talk with Jeanne van Gemert and Sharon Beckman Brindley
Cultivating a Heart Unshaken
“Everything can be included into our vast happiness; there is nothing in our experience that has to be treated as an enemy.” - Lama Tenpa Gyaltsen
Our Meditation instruction invites us to bring awareness to subjective experience, on purpose, in the present moment, with kind acceptance and equanimity. Nevertheless, we can approach the world, our practice, our work situation, our families - ourselves, even - with the best of intentions and with years of meditation practice and still find ourselves unraveling in rather difficult ways. You, in our IMCC community have generously offered your questions around these present-day challenging experiences. Sharon will offer responses to some of your questions in light of the guidance of the Eightfold Path.
Insight Meditation Community of Charlottesville (IMCC) is dedicated to the practice of mindfulness awareness, also know as Insight or Vipassana Meditation. IMCC provides a full program of weekly meditation, ongoing classes, daylong programs, and retreats.

Plumbing the Depths of Peace and Connection: Buddhist Dharma Talk with Pat Coffey

The Buddha may have been the greatest Psychologist of all time. In modern parlance, the G.O.A.T. He understood the workings and trappings of the mind. He understood how you suffer and developed a comprehensive path to alleviate it, or at the very least lessen it. He repeatedly said, “I teach one thing and one thing only, suffering and the end of suffering.” The practices and perspective that he...

Each of the jewels is a guidepost to help us learn to find refuge in our own...

“Joy is exactly what’s happening, minus our opinion of it.” with Laura DeVault

In our meditation practice, we’re taught to notice the thoughts as they arise, and notice them as they pass. We’re taught to let them go. We practice letting them go without grasping onto them or following the thought stream. By training the mind in this way, the mind becomes a tool for our use, rather than the wild, unruly director of our moods and experiences. In this talk, we’ll explore the ...
Yogic Tools for Serenity and Resilience During Turbulent Times with Matt Fritts

As the election looms and the global polycrisis unfolds, we may find ourselves teetering on the edge of overwhelm. The intensity and complexity of these unprecedented stressors may seem to exceed our ability to cope, and the resulting allostatic load (wear and tear on the body from chronic stress) can feel exhausting. But what if we could abide in the eye of the storm? The Buddhist and Hindu tr...

Many of us intend to ‘be here now’, to remember what’s true, to ‘remain undisturbed in the midst of all change, whether the days are good or bad.’ How can we see that personality is nothing other than a projection? How might we attune ourselves with stillness and not with what we are not? This talk looks at how we might see a way to live in harmony with ourselves and in our community. Insight M...

The Balance of Power and Love: Practicing Wise Speech During Polarized Times with Matt Fritts
Переглядів 332 місяці тому
The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. posited in his famous 1967 address that "one of the great problems of history is that the concepts of love and power have usually been contrasted as opposites, polar opposites, so that love is identified with a resignation of power, and power with a denial of love." In today's polarized and perilous sociopolitical environment, we may feel limited and eve...

I’ve been practicing for over 20 years and your talk today is one of the very best! Along the way, I’ve tried to explain Buddhism to others……now I’m excited to share this talk with them. You have made “finding peace within ourselves” easy to understand. You made it so personal and CLEAR. I just want to let you know how great this talk was today!

these glimpses bring so much insight to what I believe to be our true nature ...how did we move so far away from ourselves and all things good...I believe their is no happiness that surpasses peace of mind...it can only be found in LOVE...giving love and receiving love

Susan, thank you for sharing this personal moment in your life. We learn much from “each other”. It’s hard at times to “share” but important to pass on our lessons of life’s existence for the benefit of others. I share in the loss of you sibling. (Sally in Williamsburg)
