How did you made the repair on glasses and the plastics?
From AliExpress I bought 'Speedometer Trim Ring Instrument Cover Burst Gauge Bezel Kits For Harley Touring Tour Electra Street Glide 96-13 Motorcycle CNC', they are just a small bit larger than the original Ducati instrument rings and cost €13.42 and some perspex-disc-4mm from www.perspexsheet.uk/, (www.perspexsheet.uk/perspex-shapes/?product-type=Shape&shape=circle) I got mine cut a little on the small side at 84mm but a size of 92mm or so would have made fitting easier as I had to centre mine carefully. They only cost about a £1 each plus postage. and then just used some silicon sealant. Moine is a 2001 model which the speedo and Tacho both could be removed form the instruments lights part.
@@pat2bornot2b thanks!!! Will have a look. Cheers
It's honestly all the same Same burner, same motherboard 😂
Yes I've come to the same conclusion that most if not all these heaters are very much the same, but the NordKapp is twice the price of the "normal Chineses"heaters, see part 2 for using one bought on Amazon for about half the price.
Hello and greetings from Germany. And thank you for your detailed report. I have built an Aqua GSM 5kw from Nordkapp in the car. Unfortunately, the interior fan is not controlled, this should be done from 60 degrees. I am currently also with the Nordkapp support in the email traffic. Very unprofessional questions and tips are asked. I am currently waiting for an answer. The guarantee also seems to be just a cheap advertising promise. The burner works well but the electronics seem to be bad. At the delivery even the cable colors are swapped, red is minus and blue +😅
I think the only reason I got a response was that I had used Klarna to pay and they stopped the payment when I notified them of a problem. I have to say I was very surprised when they asked me to open up the unit, as that may effect any guarantee, I did open it to check but that was not the issue.
I paid with Paypal and have given a deadline of 7 working days today until I turn on the buyer protection.
Your right I think nothing would happen if you don't have some kind of protection such as PayPal. And if it's faulty they have to pay for the return postage as well.
I also connected your video with my thread in a forum where I wrote an experience report.
Thank you
Can your bloated battery be replaced under the battery warranty? I installed a FirePower lithium battery in Jan. 2020 in my 2007 Triumph Speed Triple. I made no other adjustments to the bike. It’s now five years old and it tends to hold a charge of about 13 volts. I’ve never charged it or put it on a tender. I’m very curious as to why they haven’t replaced lead acid batteries all together. Tho I’m not super educated on the technology. I can’t get over how much lighter they are compared to the lead acid.
Hi, no only 2 year warranty so it was out of warranty. They are lighter and up to the battery swelling I was happy but this has put me off using them as this as I say was my experience.
The Reason for this is that Councils have and still don't abide to the EU directives on road Management and road signage, TII and NTA Found over 300 breaches in Virginia N6 alone, this came about when a Bypass was planned so the Council took over the RMP through the town it has been taken back by TII because the bypass was cancelled. The government has to react to the poor compliance by Councils due to EU Commission 2021/1958 , and the Road Signage and Road Regulations 2023 and Road Traffic Act 2024. There is Loads More on this disgraceful Negligence by those who Manage the roads in Ireland has cost hundreds or possibly thousands of lost lives on the roads over the last nearly 30 years or so. the speed limit changes have nothing to do with road safety but to try and gloss over road management negligence.
Totally agree, there are so many issue not being addressed but this will bring in revenue and not reduce road deaths.
Did you have to bore out the spark plug hole and rethread it ? If so how much did you have to increase the hole in size ?
Yes I have another video which was drilling out the hole with an M14x1.25, that included with the inserts from AliExpress. If you got the JMP Spark Plug Thread Repair Kit from XLMoto the tap with that kit (despite the price €49.99) was just rubbish and you need to buy a M15x1.25 to fit those inserts. The Spark plug was a M12 which is the most used on motorcycles while some very old Honda, Suzuki etc. have M10 spark plugs. Hope this is of some help.
@ ….. Thank you. I’m hoping that I will not have to bore the plug hole out. My 1978 XL350 spark plug is (I think) best changed without the gas tank on. The fellow I bought it from said he replaced it and I will bet he didn’t remove the tank. Coming out the plug felt not right and sure enough his new plug had some affected threads as did the hole threads themselves. I’m going to try clean them gently and pray for the best. Thanks for the information on threading, the plug is much smaller than the ones in my Bonneville. Wouldn’t it be nice if some backyard mechanics worked slow and safe ?
I bought mine in 2022 and love it. Bought a new 2015 abs and TCS Tracer after piling up my 1000 multistrada. Niken occasionally surprises me when back wheel lets go, it is telling you not to push it anymore.
Yes great machine and yes the pressure on the back tyre due to so much grip on the front can let go sometimes. What tyre do you have on the rear, I've now a Bridgestone T32. I did have a Bridgestone S22 on but it didn't last at all.
@pat2bornot2b I had rear slippage with OEM A41 and Road 4. Just fitted is Metz Sportec 02 but not ridden on it yet.
Interested to see how you get on with the Metz Sportec
I will own a Niken……..eventually.
Hopefully as they are a super motorcycle
Great, thank you! I am hesitating about SH 23 or SH 36 for my Honda Rebel 500 and your review has helped me a lot.
Thank you
Great, I'll use it on my R1100s
Yes come up great and you only use a very small amount
Great review! Really enjoyed it 😊
Thank you, the Monster S4 is just one of those motorcycle that excites.
great video, exactly what i needed to know
Thank you :)
Thanks! Too many different opinions and experiences... I guess I'll stay with the old tech for the sake of safety. It's easier to shoot out the window a cellphone than a mounted motorcycle battery.
Have gone back to an old tech battery I happier and feel safer, as I know what to expect. Thank you for the comment.
Great stuff, I have the same bike I think, XJ650 1991. It looks to be in the same state as your one seized, a mate gave it to me been left out for 5 years in all weathers, God help me, still I will have a go. I have only serviced single cylinders in the passed so I am glad to have found your vids. Thanks for sharing pal.
Thank you and best of luck with your rebuild. You could be luck and a small amount of oil in each cylinder and turn over by hand. If you have an endoscope (inspection camera) you might be able to see the condition of the cylinders. You'll most likely need to rebuild that carbs with new jets.
Nice one thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching :)
That clutch recreation sound was spot on! 😅
Yes what a sound but you have to love the rattle :)
Nice rebuild well explained. Have recently purchased an '83 XJ650 done 140,000km and not ridden since 2015 according to WOF records. After some days reorganising and replacing some parts I have started it and sounded okay but wont run after a few revs. We have good spark on all but centre cylinders don't appear to be firing as opposed to the outers as the plugs remain clean. The centre cyls are 90psi and outer at 110 and 120psi. Assume it might be valves not seating - your thoughts?
Thank you for the question, my first reaction would be to look at the carbs.Have you replace the jets as the one in the video that jets crumbled when I set to replace them?
Id also check all valve clearances All four must have good near recomend ed gaps Second , run the engine for at leadt 20 mins - under load if possible Then re do the compression test with throttle pegged full open Should be above 130 to 140 psi if the engine is ok ??
@@johnrenehan7406 Thanks for reply. I have he XJ650 startong instantly and idling woohoo. I can get the reves yp but then spluttering and assume the advance retard is not actuating. There is a tube coming off #1 carb inlet connected to the fuel petcock which may be the advance vacuum tube but can't see where to connect otherwise.
I like my M 900 ie❤
Hi I has a carburettor M900, great bike and before that the M600 which was my first Ducati and completely changed my mind about Italian motorcycles.
Thanks for the thoughtful Commentary
Thank you, much appreciated.😁
I love my Niken, I consider it my all weather bike, i certainly feel less on edge when riding in damp conditions. I do find the rear end a little twitchy though, for such a large tyre it appears to break traction on the standard tyres long before I would normally expect on a two wheel motorcycle. Like you I have fitted mudguards, although I feel they look a little ugly, they prevent your boys getting noticeably soaked in the rain. Can I ask what hand guards you have fitted?
The hand guards are Acerbis, you'll need to make sure to get the correct fitting for the Niken, Acerbis Mount. K. 0017634 Dual Road Und X-Tarmac. They do block a lot of the view of the mirrors. Tyre wise on the back I fitted Bridgestone T32 GT and they are a lot better than the OME Bridgestone. I had an S22 but the Niken just ate that tyre in no time.
@@pat2bornot2b I'll look into them. Thank you
Thanks for all the videos provided. I have an issue where my fuel pump can be hear buzzing even after the start and it seems to slowly drain my battery over time. The motorcycle is charging the battery perfectly well and it runs well with no performance issues but the continuous buzzing concerns me. Before replacing the fuel pump, should I check anything else?
It could be the fuel filter needs replacement, but could also a sign the fuel pump is going bad.
@@pat2bornot2b You sir are a gentleman and a scholar!
It could also be a loose connection or a split tube in the petrol tank as what it sound like is that the fuel system is not fully pressurising.
@@pat2bornot2b I'll check for both this week. With the help of your video I think I'll manage
@@pat2bornot2b Changed the fuel filter - it was 20 years old original part. Works fine now, thanks for the tips!
General trend Motorcycles is down 100% correct. Manufacturers will not make " Sensible " bikes . Too expensive . Too big . Too Heavy . Loaded with crap and usless rubbish . Slipper clutches. Ride modes. Forward radar . No use 180/ 200 hp. 6 Speed gear boxes. Suprised nobody has thought of a button that jerks you off on the move. Young people are not interested at all. Old generation like me dying off.
Your right, I'm no fan of all the extra electronics added to bikes, just more stuff to go wrong and difficult to fix. We are the last generation to really enjoy motorcycles with all the speed cameras and shit coming down the line.
@@pat2bornot2b 5 Years ago out in rural Lincolnshire Sun . afternoon on 1200vfr got caught speeding by "HELICOPTER" . Never saw or herd it. Fortunatly did not get a driving ban 55 years clean licence. Bikes were good fun but now do a bit of damage thousand pound to repair. Unfortunatly bikes are coming towards the end like us. Started 1962 200cc James Captain. Manufacturers just will not see the there folly and make repairable sensible bikes. Still marshall at Cadwell for Classic / Vintage club racing.
Was looking to buy an Indian scout 60,ridiculous price brand new.
The Indian scout starts at Starting at £ 13,395 MSRP in the uk that's 15,992 Euro* in Ireland Starting at €17,495 difference €1.503 and I'm sure every small extra pushes the difference up more.
Cost here is a rip off, look at the new Triumph speed 400 as one example, it costs 5500 Euros on the continent and 6800 in Ireland. The IBT adds to the hassle and cost now too. I passed my A test in July 2024 and absolutely love biking and I regret not doing it years ago ! Insurance is also a rip off and the 50cc market has been wiped out by the sale of those horrible battery kids scooters that everyone seem to be on today, no license, no training, no insurance, riding on footpaths, kids not supposed to be on them under 16 yet I see them all the time and sometimes 2 kids on one scooter. Anyway, motorbikes and petrol scooters are far more practical and we should be encouraging more people out of their ugly heavy SUVs but Irish people are addicted to their cars spending 40-50 K seems to be heading toward the average, cheap credit PCP and cars are a status Symbol in Ireland, can't have a car older than the neighbour and no way they could have a motorbike in the yard, the neighbours would think they'd gone bankrupt !
Yes VRT is a big issue, so much for free trade in the EU. IBT although a very good idea adds to the cost of getting into motorcycling. Insurance for young people is a much bigger barrier. Would have been much better, as you say, to promote small motorcycles as means of transport rather than the electric scooter, what a mess! We have the Greens to blame for this. When I was young (16), motorcycling was for the young now it's all the grey haired like myself, the freedom it gave. If you ever see old films of Dublin it's full of people on small motorcycles getting around.
@@pat2bornot2b Yeah I will look up some old film of Dublin but Cars are a status symbol for Irish people now, they wouldn't dare let the neighbours see a motorcycle in the driveway for fear of being seen as poor !
Thank you so much for this video. I'll have to postpone this job for spring since it involves changing oil, coolant, gaskets etc so might as well do a proper service with it. Good thing I check this out before blindly going in.
Thank you for commenting. Yes I expected just 2 bolts like most bikes but no, not Ducati. Ducati used gasket sealant on the engine casing but I prefer to use the gaskets I bought on eBay..
@@pat2bornot2b I'll go the same route likely, thank you for the tips!
Fond memories of owning an S4 with that wonderful engine that thinks it’s a 2 stroke once the revs hit 7500! As someone who like his front wheel firmly planted on the road, it certainly kept my attention 😅
Great to hear, I sold my original 2001 after 7 years and regretted it, so bought another. I added the performance ECU on to this one and it makes it even better, and yes you have to pay attention as it can get a little wild :)
It was a pleasure speaking with you last Sunday at the Discovery Centre. It made me smile when I later stumbled upon your video review of the S4. Great stuff.
Good to meet you Sam and funny that you came across my videos. Any questions just ask.
Nice review, thanks! I would like to own one but am a bit hesitant because I wonder how it will hold up in winter. I ride year round and worry about how the front end linkages will fare in winter time?
Well I've had mine a few years and no issue and it's the bike I use most when the weather is bad as that is when it really excels. The front mechanism is protected very well by the plastics. I'm also very careful when cleaning the bike not to use a power hose on that section. After over 4 years of ownership the front has been no problems. The only issue can be balancing the front wheels as some tyre places don't have the equipment to do it, where I get mine done they do trucks and tractors so have a lot of different size inserts to fit the balancing machine.
Are the headlights any good?. I ride alot in the dark. Thanks
They are OK that's the best I can say. I'm not over impressed but that seems to be the case with a lot of motorcycles and in particular modern Yamahas. A lot of people fit extra spot lights on them, I've not done that as I don't do enough night riding.
Thanks for the info.
Hello- quick question- I have one of these laser 'pro duros' and like you, would prefer it quieter. Does the baffle effect performance in any noticeable way on the kle500?
Noticed no difference in performance, it's still loud but not like it was before fitting when it was extremely loud.
5:15 Every product page I've seen says the SH23's comes with a third lock fitting.
The SH36 did bit not the SH23 - unless things have changed since I bought mine..
My Moto Guzzi Griso sounds the same with the dry clutch. Italian bikes. Great, at times irritating, fun. But you know you have a motorbike.
Had a long term loan of a Griso, it was the first Guzzi I had every ridden, then after testing a Norge I went and bought one, rate it as, one of the best bike I ever owned, and regret selling it. I've a Laverda 500 as well and call it the bike that keeps giving, as there's always something to do. I know what you mean about knowing you have a motorcycle. Back in 1994 I had a Honda VFR although it did everything it was bland and that was the catalyst into Italian bike and my first was a Ducati Monster 600 and I was so happy it felt like a real motorcycle.
@@pat2bornot2b Yeah, hundred percent. I've owned Jap, Brit, and Italian bikes over the years. I loved my old Japanese bikes for what they were, but the Italian and Brit bikes just have so much character they put a smile on yer dial every time. The exhaust note, the shake. Love it.
Literally laughed out loud when you shook nuts in the can!😄
Thank you for your comment and good you got a laugh out of it, but that is what they sound like 😂🤣
I had a 1982 XJ650RJC Seca. The C in the designation identifies it as the ultra-rare Canada-only version. This is the one even most Yamaha experts have never heard about. One apparent difference between my bikes and yours is that mine had Yamaha's YICS system. The first summer, my future wife and I packed our stuff and put ourselves and the bike on a plane bound for England. From there we rode on yto the continent and ultimately Italy. We were in our very early twenties and it was an unforgettable adventure. I ended up keeping that bike for 11 years during the earliest of which it was my only transportation. It even saw some snow storms. We all have that one bike we regret selling, mine is the 650 Seca.
Yes I've not heard of the XJ650RJC, and that a great story and adventure. This XJ is not mine I restored it for a friend and it's been living here ever since as he does not have a good place to store it so it is 'living in my garage' until he gets sorted, when ever that will be. We as motorcyclist alway have bike we regret selling, some for sentimental reasons others because we needed the money at the time or in my case often just stupidity. Thank you for the comment, and what bike if any do you have at the moment.
@@pat2bornot2b I have a 1976 Honda CB400F which was my first bike in 1979 and which I managed to never sell, a 1976 Kawasaki KH100, a 1976 MotoBi 125 2C which was gifted to me by an uncle in Italy and lives at my cousin's home in the old country, and a 2017 Moto Guzzi California. On the lift in the garage is a 1979 Honda CX500C which belongs to my daughter and which I'm slowly recommissioning.
That's a great collection, here I've a 2001 Ducati monster s4, that is a replacement for my original S4 a bike I stupidly sold, a 1978 Laverda 500 that I rebuilt from rusty bits, a 2005 Suzuki en 125 that I bought for my daughter but I now use a run around and a 2018 Yamaha Niken that got me back on motorcycles after an accident that almost ended my biking. One of the bikes I regret selling was a 2006 Moto Guzzi Norge 1200, a super bike and wished I had kept. I had a lot of bikes since I first started on a Honda CB125 in 1974. I owned a good many Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi before so a long list. Enjoy the restoration of the CX500 and riding the Guzzi, which I'm jealous of as I love a Moto Guzzi California Vintage.
Really helpful, clear concise review, thank you for the practical width warning.
Glad it was helpful! And thank you for your comment
Brilliant video well done pat and finn 👏👌
Glad you enjoyed it
Great review! Good to know about the SH23 and the passenger grab handle problem. My V-Storm also has grab handles so I need to make sure they can come off before purchasing the SH23. Thanks!
Thank you for the comment and best of luck with the grab rails on your V-Storm. There may be enough clearance but not on a Yamaha Niken
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it.
Great job! I've got a second series Alpino with the balancer shaft. I'd be lying if I said it eliminates vibration, but it's a fun bike to ride, with good handling, great looks and an engine that likes to rev.
The first generation vibrations are mostly felt at the foot rests, yes it always puts a smile on my face when I ride it. You really need to rev it to get a move on, but that's part of the fun. Thank you for the comment and happy riding
I did the same job to the same type of brake calipers yesterday. I've found that the performance of these brakes drops off after a while, so I pull the calipers off once a year and give it all a good clean and re-grease where needed. I don't remove the pistons, but pump them out a bit for cleaning, to make sure I've got everything. The pistons, replaced a few years ago, are stainless steel. I've had the bike for 18 years so the design of these brakes looks totally normal to me!
Good to hear. As i seem to get different bikes to fix new things always come up. And yes these replacement pistons are stainless steel. Thank you for the comment
Seems the later ones with the different weight distribution and upgraded rear suspension are the ones to go for.
Yes, but the price difference between picking up a first generation second hand or almost new is very large. Yes the new Niken would be better, but both suffer from high depreciation so you would need to weigh this up before buying. You could upgrade the first gen Niken rear shock with ohlins suspension. But I agree the second gen Niken is an improvement on the original but I could not justify the cost of changing the bike so I'll be sticking with the model I have and after 4 years of ownership it still impresses me.
Thanks for the video. I always like to read what owners make of bikes and it seems the only people who don't like the Niken haven't ridden it. Looks like a clever piece of kit.
Yes it some motorcycle, I too before I got it didn't understand really what it was, in fact I had walked past it in a showroom without giving the bike much thought . It was only have a wash out on my Ducati and subsequent 9 fractured ribs, torn ligaments in my shoulder and a punctured lung did I look at the Niken.
Thanks just finishing and took for test ride So I did it a little different I suspended the handlebars from the rafter in my shed and just unplugged the headlight Removed the headlight assembly but not completely just move to side , Obviously removed tire and tubes but your video was very informative thanks Ps I really like your handlebars that will be my winter project for my barn find
Thank you for commenting. Yes there are different ways of doing this and I did try to keep the wheel on but turned out more work rather than the shortcut I was trying to do. Glad it was of help and happy riding.
Upgrading my 82 xj650 barn find and this is one of the better videos I have seen and I have watched as many as I could find thanks for sharing it
Glad it helped, if you have any questions I'll try and answer
Enjoyed your video, good to get a fellow owners experience. I think your review is spot on, ive had the GT version since 2021. The add ons you've done look great, ive added mud flaps, they're a 100% must. The original luggage is poor and leaks or sweats with liners. Haven't fitted hand guards though my tracer Gt did have them and certainly noticed warmer drier hands. Do you have a link to them please, likewise the screen add on. I really think my pillion would appreciate that! The only negatives I can add are. 1. Insurance might be expensive as fewer companies will offer cover and I believe all stipulate overnight garaging. It is a very heavy beastie, scarves through corners beautifully but very tight slow hairpins need extra caution, you certainly feel every kilo of it trying to tip you. Im 3/4 the way through my Pcp now and 30km+ covered. Some serious thinking and negotiating on how I get the best deal to keep it after!

Fantastic & very informative video could you please advise where you obtained the SH23 end rubbers from Mr Numo
Hi thank you for the comment. The rubbers (really more a plastic part) come with the SH23.
Chama for S4. I got one in the garage❤
This is my second S4 I bought the first a Senna when they first came out on 2001.had it for 7 years foolish sold it and always said I'd get another with I did in 2020.
Brother thanks for posting this. I’ve been looking for a better and safer way to get pistons back in the cylinder from the bottom and you nailed it. Great job I ordered a set of the ring compressors today.
Thank you and great you found the video useful
Hi, thanks for the video. I have the same set but only one compression tool. Is this enough to fix the job also on a 4-cilinder ? Like to hear, Greetz Alexander
Hi. Like you i have been riding many years. Not as strong or agile, but want to keep riding. I’m 60 5’ 7”. How difficult was the lowering kit. Like your video.
Well, I'm 66 and just under 5'8" (part of getting old you get a little shorter). I did a deal when I bought my Niken to have the lower kit fitted so I didn't fit it myself. It is still a tall bike and I'm very happy to have it fitted. If you have any other questions just ask. Thank you for the comment and liking the video.
Would it be possible to leave out the pannier end pieces entirely so then u can mount both panniers whenever u want without having to unscrew anything? Whats the purpose of them anyway?
No, as the end section on the SH23 is part of the pannier locking position mechanism. It's not on the SH36, more a position stop, but the SH23 end part is longer and so you can't fit the SH36 on if in place as the gap then to fit is too small..
