Depeche Mode Albums Ranked from Least to First
Wildlife is one of those albums I'm not supposed to love, but I do. It's not my favorite Mott album, but it does contain my favorite song by the band, Mick Ralphs' Home Is Where I Want to Be, which is odd because I'm such a huge Ian Hunter fan, in fact I like his solo career even better than Mott the Hoople! But the song just makes me deliriously happy, what can I say, in spite of the bittersweet lyrics, which I very much relate to. I also think closing the album with a ten minute medley of classic 50s rock is a nervy and ridiculous move that somehow works. Would love to see a ranking of Ian's solo career, which is till going quite strong.
The The fan, Bunnymen at no1, House of Love on 88 list. Following. .... Spear of Destiny, Psychedelic Furs and Husker Du too. Should have waited until the end 😂
The t shirt alone tells me you appreciate great music.
1. The Hoople (1974) 2. Mott (1973) 3. Brain Capers (1971) 4. Mott The Hoople (1969) 5. Mad Shadows (1970) 6. All The Young Dudes (1972) 7. Wildlife (1971) Also, I released Fester's Lucky 13: 2024 Year-End Summary into the wild. Here's a curated list of albums I think you might like from my list. I left off the obvious one that I know you know, The Cure. Fastnbulbous Lucky 13 page linked in my profile for all the extensive genre lists and blurbs. 1. The Sea Kings - Fear is All Around 2. Rosalie Cunningham - To Shoot Another Day 3. The Buttertones - Face to Face With Fantasy 4. The Blinders - Beholder 5. The Other Sun - Daimon, Devil, Dawn 6. Neon Nightmare - Faded Dream 7. Deadletter - Hysterical Strength 8. Coughin’ Vicars - Curses & Prayers 9. And Also The Trees - Mother-of-Pearl Moon 10. Hamish Hawk - A Firmer Hand 11. Ist Ist - Light a Bigger Fire 12. Rosegarden Funeral Party - From the Ashes 13. Then Comes Silence - Trickery Bubbling under: Demon Head, Rope Sect, Dool, Chelsea Wolfe, The March Violets, Slate, Inca Babies.
@Fastnbulbous1969 I'm gonna get on checking out these. I do like the Rosalie Cunningham record. I have the new And Also the Trees... that is VERY good... I really love the cover and artwork also. I like your Mott ranking also. Mott and The Hoople are pretty interchangeable for me, depending on my mood. ATYD could easily fall behind Mad Shadows or Brain Capers too.
I would mostly agree with you on the ranking but would have to swap Mott for The Hoople. Love Roll away the stone, Alice, Through the looking glass.... well the whole album. I might of overplayed Mott but always thought I wish i was your mother was a weak closer especially when i found out that it had replaced Rose, which is one of my favourite B sides of theirs. Keep up the good work.
@keithbeer782 Thank you!!! For me, it's literally a hair separating The Hoople and Mott... if I do this again in a month... it could easily flip. 😆 I also agree that Rose is far superior to WIWYM.
Thank You for doing this ranking, it appears to be the only one on You Tube. I saw them in September in London and it was an almost spirtual experience. It was a night I will never forget. My ranking is different, but I love all his work. For me, from last to best: Burning Blue Soul, Hanky Panky, Mind Bomb, Ensoulment, Soul Mining, Naked Self, Infected, Dusk 🎉 His lyricism is unsurpassed in my opinion.
@davidbennetts3138 my pleasure! I looked it up and noticed here wasn't any as of a couple months ago. Thought the world needed it 😉. I saw him here in Philadelphia a couple months ago... it truly was awesome.
My Top 5 Rock/Metal albums from 1980!: 5. Journey - Departure 4. Judas Priest - British Steel 3. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell 2. Queen - The Game 1. AC/DC - Back in Black
My Top 5 Rock/Metal Albums of 1981!: 5. AC/DC - For Those About to Rock 4. Riot - Fire Down Under 3. Tygers of Pan Tang - Spellbound 2. Rush - Moving Pictures 1. Judas Priest - Point of Entry
@@WorseReviews I actually ready like Point of Entry... it took guts to do that record at the time!
In hindsight parts of Point of Entry sound like proto desert rock! Underrated album for sure. I was hoping since they played "Heading Out to the Highway" at last year's Power Trip fest, they'd do it in Austin last month but alas no.
You are cranking! I enjoyed the 1980 one, but didn't give my usual comments because I've had my head down working on my Fester's Lucky 13 Year-End Summary, coming in a couple days. Nice one on Riot! I didn't discover them until a few years after that album, but became a big fan. Same with Tygers of Pan Tang. I also had the Journey and Foreigner records, but never really liked 'em. The rest of the top 13 I was listening to at the time, age 11-12: 1. Rush - Moving Pictures 2. Iron Maiden - Killers 3. Electric Light Orchestra - Time 4. Black Sabbath - Mob Rules 5. Billy Squier - Don’t Say No 6. Def Leppard - High ‘N’ Dry 7. Riot - Fire Down Under 8. Van Halen - Fair Warning 9. Genesis - Abacab 10. Saga - Worlds Apart 11. Tygers Of Pan Tang - Spellbound 12. Saxon - Denim And Leather 13. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman Bubblin' under: Hanoi Rocks, Saracen, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Girlschool, Mõtley Crüe, Raven, Motörhead, AC/DC, Judas Priest (I really dig Point of Entry), Pat Benatar, Kix, Blackfoot, Y&T, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Blue Öyster Cult, Styx, Nazareth, The Michael Schenker Group, Cirith Ungol, Rose Tattoo, Loudness.
@Fastnbulbous1969 The early 80s was chock full of NWOBHM bands 🤘 many of which were hard to find back in the day! Brian had to dig to find those Riot records! I'll be looking out for your list. I also really liked Point of Entry... brave move at the time for them!
I am not much of a Van Halen guy, but for whatever reason I love Fair Warning.
@kevtruth I'm pretty sure Brian had that on his short list. I was lukewarm on VH even in my early teens. But I always believed WACF and FW were their best contrary to popular belief.
My Notification bell didn't ring last week. Top 10 of 1988 - # 10 Temple Of Low Men - Crowded House # 9 Straight Outta Compton - NWA # 8 Surfer Rosa - The Pixies # 7 Fishermans Blues - Waterboys # 6 If I Should .. - The Pogues # 5 I'm Your Man - Leonard Cohen # 4 Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth # 3 Starfish - The Church # 2 It Takes A Nation ... - Public Enemy & # 1 Spirit Of Eden - Talk Talk.
My favorite Journey song is on Departure - People & Places with Neal Schon on lead vocals & Greg & Steve assisting. Last album with Gregg.
Brian had Departure in the running for his list.

@glennaustin37 I'm only 2 videos in... but I'm loving this already. JDs These Days is great. Gonna check out the Japan track... Thanks for the heads up!
Yes, the other Cure ones are excellent, and the JD one very special. He is putting up some Clan of Xymox in the next week or so... 🖤
I have Mott and All The Young Dudes. Had no idea about The Hoople, Brain Capers and the others. Great vid, as always
Thank you!! If you like those 2... i think you'll also like The Hoople and Brain Capers. The other 3 are different but really good in their own way.
Only recently I discovered Spirit of Eden, an excellent album.
@olavirannisto3552 if you like Spirit of Eden you might also like their follow up Laughing Stock. Thank you for watching!!
I Agree with Heaven and Hell great album
Nice Cure Albums ranking. It's interesting to see everyone's list. Recently started my own channel, check out my ranking here: ua-cam.com/video/X-C26U8hFzw/v-deo.html
By '88 I had just about given up on guitar bands (until '89 anyway!), and as a consequence it was a fairly sparse year. Excepting compilations, I only bought 5 albums: 1 Mystery Hotel - Psyche 2 Front by Front - Front 242 3 Crash Head - Mark Shreeve 4 Hydrology - Recoil 5 Radio Heart - Radio Heart 🎹🖤🎹🖤🎹
@glennaustin37 awesome. I'm gonna have to look up the Radio Heart record... I only know the one they did with Gary Numan.
1988 was such a weird time in music.
Best music channel
Wow. Thank you!
Agree!!!
@glennaustin37 thank you guys so much. With any luck, I'll be able to grow the channel and do even more!
1988 is a lean year in quality for me, but i have 10 in my collection that I still dig 10. Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 9. Richard Thompson - Amnesia 8. The Smithereens - Green Thoughts 7. Crowded House - Temple Of Low Men 6. Graham Parker - The Mona Lisa's Sister 5. John Hiatt - Slow Turning 4. The Church - Starfish 3. REM - Green 2. Fishbone - Truth And Soul 1. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
@kevtruth you know what... I've never heard that Graham Parker record... not sure how that evaded me.i really like his earlier records... Gonna check that out.
Pretty solid list. I still listen a lot to Mona Lisa's sister and slow turning👍
1. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation 2. Pixies - Surfer Rosa 3. Eleventh Dream Day - Prairie School Freakout 4. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Tender Prey 5. Dinosaur Jr. - Bug 6. Talk Talk - Spirit Of Eden 7. The New Christs - Divine Rites 8. Fugazi - Fugazi EP 9. The Feelies - Only Life 10. The Pogues - If I Should Fall From The Grace Of God 11. The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane 12. Naked Raygun - Jettison 13. And Also The Trees - The Millpond Years For Against - December Death Of Samantha - Where The Women Wear The Glory And The Men Wear The Pants Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff EP My Bloody Valentine - Isn’t Anything Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll The Sun And The Moon - The Sun And The Moon Joy Division - Substance R.E.M. - Green Bored! - Bored! EP The Church - Starfish The Jazz Butcher - Fishcotheque The Mighty Lemon Drops - World Without End Ups And Downs - Underneath the Watchful Eye Throwing Muses - House Tornado Siouxsie & the Banshees - Peepshow The Wild Swans - Bringing Home The Ashes Passion Fodder - Love, Waltzes and Anarchy The House Of Love - The House Of Love My Bloody Valentine - You Made Me Realise EP Also some metal and hip hop - Maiden, Slayer, Public Enemy, Coroner, etc. Wow, another goth album I totally missed, Red Temple Spirits - Dancing to Restore an Eclipsed Moon! I also don't have that Balaam & the Angel album because it sounded like their debut was the one to have, then quality dropped. But I'll giveitalisten. Were you full-on goth at some point or just goth adjacent? At the age of 18-19, my reaction to disappointment was pretty severe, so I ranked that Killing Joke near the bottom (415) with the likes of L.A. Guns, Bangles and Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction, lol. Lots of your picks were just bubbling under my top 30. The ones that you may not have that would be up your alley are And Also the Trees, For Against, Ups And Downs, The Wild Swans, and Passion Fodder, who are a pretty new discovery, lead by an American ex-pat living in France, Theo Hakola. He previously had a post-punk band, Orchestre Rouge, and his five albums with Passion Fodder (second album, Fat Tuesday from 1986 is my fave) are definitely influenced by Nick Cave.
Ah, yes... I was pretty full on goth for a couple of years... more of a dirt bag leather jacket Goth (ala FALAA era Sisters) rather than the poet blouse goth. 😆 🤣 I do have that And Also the Trees record and probably could have included it but I really only liked half of it... but same could be said for my bottom 3 or so on this list... and SOAB... I forgot about The Sun and the Moon. Ugh. Should probably be included. Damn. The KJ record grew on me after playing their other records to death I decided to give it another shot about 10 years ago. It's better than I remembered for sure. The Balaam record is very polished... but I thought it suited them... it actually got more play on HBB than 120 minutes at the time.
Hello... i m french and fan of the cure from 40 years... my top 5 is.... 5............seveteen seconds...............4............pornography..........................3............wish........................................2...........the head on the door............1.............the top...............
@@DINOVAL33 😯😯 The Top at #1! Love it!
Hi Al! I'm pretty sure Marty's first solo album was In Reflection, which I totally love. Just dropped a video on The Church gig I went to, thought they were magnificent. What a show! Also, dropping my Starfish review in the next few days. But enough about me...😋 Thanks for another wonderful ranking, you've given me a whole lot of music to listen to...again! Gotta give Galaxies 500 a spin. Brilliant video, cheers! 🙏
Ugh... you are, in fact, correct. I thought they were both 88. Oh well... 😆. Very jealous about getting to see that tour! I will check out the footage and will be looking out for the Starfish video! Thank you for your support!
No Surfer Rosa? Would have been my number one for 1988. Others you didn't mention that probably make my top 25 somewhere are Lovely by The Primitives, 16 Lovers Lane by The Go-Betweens, Only Live by The Feelies, Every Dog Has His Day by Let's Active, and Green Thoughts by The Smithereens. Agree with you that 1988 wasn't the best year, but having to compete against all those great years in the mid 80s is a tough ask for 1988 and 1989.
Yeah... 88 had only four 5 star records... 87 had 9. Definitely the least stacked year of the decade... so far... I could be wrong... but I remember 89 being light also. We'll see... So... The Pixies... for some reason I have yet to connect with their music. I liked them a bit more when I was young... but as I've gotten older... I've lost the connection. Things can change... but Surfer Rosa was my favorite of their records and it got beat out by Balaam and the Angel 😆. I'll be listening to Doolittle for 89... I'll see where that goes. I know... its weird considering everything else I love. I'm actually a pretty big Smithereens fan... but I generally tend to LOVE 4-5 songs on each record and sift through the rest of the album. The Feelies and Go Betweens were both in contention also. Thank you for supporting the channel!
@@deadendstreetchannel With the Smithereens I agree with you on the sifting, although their first two albums I find to be great from start to finish. Also, a quick shout out to you for your Hanoi Rocks mentions in your other rankings videos. I never paid them much attention, but you convinced me to give them a shot and I picked up the "All Those Wasted Years" live CD. Thought that would be a good starting point and I'm enjoying it.
@t.o.408 very cool! Glad you're enjoying them!

Good vid, pretty good ranking which I agree with about 80%. I'm probably twice your age and I have followed the Cure for many decades with a personal old connection with Robert and the band going back to the mid 80's. There were more than one very drunken all nighters back in our 20's. Good job.
"The Top" 10 1. THE HEAD ON THE DOOR 2. THE WALK ep ( or Japanese Whispers... technically a comp, but a comp of what? Right, some of the best tracks of The Cure! "Upstairs Room," "The Walk," "Just One Kiss," "Lament," "The Dream"!) "The Walk" was a new LP, upon release in '83! 3. SEVENTEEN SECONDS / FAITH (because I just can't truly separate them, although I slightly prefer 0:17, they come off as a great double LP - Happily Ever After) 4. DISINTEGRATION 5. PORNOGRAPHY 6. BOYS DON'T CRY (which is the MUCH improved updated version of TIB on Elektra U.S.) 7. THE TOP 8. WISH 9. KISS ME, KISS ME, KISS ME 10. SONGS OF A LOST WORLD
Wish #7? #6 Kiss me? Sacrilege lol. Just kidding rankings are totally a personal thing.I have them both in my top 3. Im 59. In between days is in my top 10 of thiers. Push is fantastic as well. I recorded Boys don't cry and Seventeen seconds on cassette, probably still my most played Cure albums🎧. The last Cure album I bought was the excellent 2005 Faith deluxe 2cd reissue. Some later albums I had not heard before. Both 4:13 and The Cure S/T are better than I had expected. Don't really like the new one. I think it drags a bit (as does Bloodflowers) although I do like Warsong and Drone no drone (Reeves!). Overall great discograpy, singles, b-sides almost all very good. One of the best bands ever, probably in my top twenty.
@@ryam9495 thank you. Love seeing differing rankings!
Totally get where you're coming from on the Zeppelin ranking. When I play Zepp IV, I always skip both Rock and Roll and Black Dog. I skip Whole Lotta Love when I listen to Zepp II. Weirdly enough, I've never gotten sick of Stairway to Heaven, even though I've probably heard that one more than any of their songs.
Love the new album 💿 💋

Another great list. I probably share about half your list in my top 25. Some you didn't mention that would be on my list are... 54-40 - S/T (The Green Album) Let's Active - Big Plans for Everybody The Woodentops - Giant The Fall - Bend Sinister Crowded House - S/T PIL - Album The Call - Reconciled Camper Van Beethoven - S/T Game Theory - Big Shot Chronicles Guadalcanal Diary - Jamboree Hunters and Collectors - Human Frailty Rain Parade - Crashing Dream I commented in your 1985 video that it was my favorite year for releases, but after looking through 1986 I'm starting to rethink. I'll just take the easy way out and call it a first place tie for best year.
Husker Du Warehouse Songs and Stories might be #1 for me in 1987. Bought it during winter break from school and it might not have left my cassette player until spring break. Mould and Hart were to me what Lennon and McCartney were to my parents.
1985 is probably my all time favorite year for album releases. Your list is great, and other than Kate Bush (never been a fan) your entire top 10 is on my top 25 list. Tim is my favorite album of all time, so it gets my #1 spot. Others you didn't have that would be on my list are REM's Fables of the Reconstruction , Hoodoo Gurus Mars Needs Guitars, Tha Fall This Nations Saving Grace, and I would have both Husker Du albums in my top 25.
Man this is difficult, because the cure simply made no bad album ever... I still stick to The Top. Thanks for reminding me of all the beauty
