You might be right. We didn’t really get to hunt them much and ended up giving them to some kids. We just didn’t have enough time to fool with pups and I know people that train during the day and the night. Like you said everyone does it a little different and I’m ok with that. I’ll give you my opinion…if you’re just wanting to get in to raccoon hunting or if you’ve never been at all I’d find someone local that does coon hunt and try to tag along. Most coon hunters won’t have a problem with that. As far as getting your own dog there are a couple different options…if money is no object and you have a few thousand dollars to throw around find you a dog that already knows what it’s doing meaning you can turn that dog loose and it can go tree a raccoon by itself. If you don’t have that kind of money I’d search for an older experienced dog…a decent experienced dog will teach you more than you’ll ever teach it. Folks will get rid of them cheaper just due to their age. But if you’re just getting started into coon hunting I would not recommend starting with an 8 week old puppy. Pups are the cheapest route and the most tempting but they are by far the most demanding and frustrating. I’m sure a large amount of new coon hunters have quit because they went with the cheapest route and didn’t have the time, dedication, experience, or patience to train a pup. This dog has provided a ton of memories for us and set a high standard for the rest of the dogs we hunt.

This particular event was held at the Jackson county coon club around Ripley WV. I believe the state hunt is just held once per year. You can go like the West Virginia Coonhunters association on Facebook and they share a ton of events on there.
