Viral Symphony: real-time duet with SARS-CoV-2
Our collaborative interests as musicians, biologists, and programmers come together to ask a simple question: What does the coronavirus sound like inside a host? To answer this question, we wanted to capture the essence of SARS-COV-2, with its illustrious crown, having its first moments with a potential host cell. All it takes is one spike of a SARS-COV-2 crown to make its move onto the host cell’s glycoprotein receptor. We decided to focus on the binding of a human receptor protein and the SAR-COV-2 spike protein and how they would sound thematically in a piece of music. To achieve this, we used bioinformatic algorithms to translate the codon sequences of the spike protein and human receptor into designated pitches. We made the spike protein of SARS-COV-2 into an electronic playback sequence and accompanied it with a piano and string quartet to signify the human receptor’s biochemical interaction with the invader. Our intent was to exemplify the tension of humans existing in an ancient microbe reality. We may be able to escape the sounds of COVID-19, but we cannot escape the unimaginable reach of death and humanity.
