Xcom 2 does not have an alternate timeline; it is the actual continuation of the first game. In Xcom 1 you never really won, they make that clear in the second one. In the first game, during the Exalt assault on your base, you were captured, and the rest of the first game, including the ending, are actually "simulations" that the aliens themselves made you live.

I don't consider it dark or profound. Humans are shitty and more dark than any other lifeform. In fact what the aliens are doing is the same as we've been doing to animals and each other for millennia- exploiting lesser lifeforms. In that sense there is nothing sacred about being human. Her motivations are purely that of intellect- splice genes = advantage = better chance of saving earth.

I actually like to think that tge reason the lich flips out upon us aiming the gun at him is less indicitave of him being about to die but more him being fully aware that doing so would cause a conplete time crash

I hate to point this out to you, but every one of the XCOM troopers weren't forced into anything. All of them knew what they were going into. In fact, the psionic trooper thar interacts with the Ethereal device is called "The Volunteer". The seeming lack of "choice" from the soldiers is just a game mechanic. But in lore, I see each and every XCOM troopers as explicitly volunteering for each procedure they undertake (i.e.: MEC trooper, augmentations, becoming psionic, and The Volunteer).

You can argue that the Dr. Valhen vs. Dr. Shen dynamic is at the direction of the Commander, but Valhen’s reactions tend to be a barely contained desire to unleash scientific hell upon the aliens while Shen thinks the price is extreme, maybe not paid now, but eventually. When it comes to survival of humanity, too far isn’t far enough.

As someone who has been playing for 3 weeks and Vauban is literally my second frame, my greatest achievement was doing a survival mission and coming out with 14750% fire accuracy because apparently the flechette orb counts as a hit but I'm not shooting so it bumps up accuracy.

hey! i'd totally recommend checking out EXIT the gungeon! its set after enter, and is canon, and also adds tons more lore, like who the high priest used to be and where the killithids and mine flayer come from!
