Nearly all singers nowadays need to be wired with a headset microphone in front of their mouths, with a team of sound technicians in a booth to manage their performances. Martha and her generation had primitive recording technology, if any, and could rely only on their talent.

That's a voice developed before electric amplification existed, and singers needed to project strongly enough to be heard throughout an entire theater - or even in a tent, or outdoors.

This footage is incredible. do you happen to know who has the rights to this? I am working on a documentary and would love to use this in my film.

She was something else...she did a lot in her life time! Amazing she was an officer in the Military and is layed to rest at a Military Fort. A very accomplished women from the " the Greatest Generation" which I remember well...

I like dry humor and do not often laugh out loud - but this! I can’t stop. Martha is just so wonderful, bawdy with a boa and being thrown around. Whether she kept singing through all of that or later dubbed herself, her cornet voice was just the best.

When she belts out that first "MAMA!!!", I crack up. Love Martha in just about everything I've seen her in. Love her as Mel's mother, Carrie Sharples, in Alice, Boss Witch in Pufnstuf, and her apperances on Carol Burnett and other variety shows.

Colonel Maggie was a great supporter of the troops and a trained nurse. She not only entertained but worked in surgery when needed. She was adopted by the Green Berets and laid to rest at FT. Bragg military cemetery.
