Kidical Mass is a great movement that brings riders of all ages together for group rides that are a fun way to show the validity and importance of riding bikes for transportation and leisure. Kidical Mass Toronto did a Halloween Ride on Oct. 26, that brought out dozens of riders with costumes and decorated bikes in collaboration with Pedaal - Coffee Bikes.

Beat the heat by checking out some of Toronto's newest bike lane additions. I visited some brand new lanes on Avenue Road, widened and protected lanes on University, and somewhat lacklustre protection on Bloor West under a rail bridge. Come watch me try not to get right-hooked!
How Many Bike Lane Blockers Are In The New Bloor West Lanes?

A bit over six months since my last ride in the area, I went down to Etobicoke to see the new extension of the Bloor bike lanes west to Islington and beyond. Nice to see some true connectivity, that makes a 21 km bike lane stretch from Scarborough in the east almost to Mississauga in the west.

On paper, Mississauga's Hurontario Road has a multi-use path (basically a glorified sidewalk) north from Port Credit, up and under the QEW highway to the Queensway. In reality, construction on a much-delayed LRT project has left the path an obstacle course of pylons, potholes, fencing and giant concrete poles.

Last Friday of the month means a Critical Mass group ride downtown, this time we headed east to the Port Lands area, to check out three new bridges, two of which just opened in January. A perfect night in this weirdly warm winter to check out some of the best new cycling infrastructure in the city. Vehicular intimidation on a Spring Ride East to Taylor Creek
Unfortunately, the Critical Mass rides tend to just reinforce the negative stereotypes that cagers have about people on bikes. They tend to create more animosity than they help. The logical response is "man I wish these people had their own lane so they wouldn't be blocking traffic", but the actual response is usually more like "This is why I hate bicycles and none of my tax dollars should go to encourage more people to ride". It sucks because we really DO need more bike lanes.
if i lived in toronto you bet i'd be in there cycling with them
having traveled, lived in other cities, I noticed here in Toronto that there is a great lack of civility, of common sense with a large part of selfishness and individualism, as much among pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, I see all kinds, example of cars that honk at cyclists, or a cyclist who shouts at a motorist because the trees on the corner of the street hide the arrival of the cyclist, to pedestrians who press on the pedestrian light and jump in front of me in the street, fortunately I had anticipated and I have many like that, yet I only go back and forth to renovation sites and some outings. I also noticed a lot of complainers and with few ideas, I just watched a report on the cyclist in Paris, Amsterdam and Copenhagen and Tokyo = they have an automated underground parking, it's great. after watching this report, there is indeed a great lack of civility, common sense and kindness in Toronto, the road is shared, yes it is true that there are motorists who use their cars to go very close, we must not forget that here, we have a slightly colder winter than the cities mentioned above, perfect that does not exist, but harmony could on the other hand and it will not happen tomorrow the day before that will happen here in Toronto with all this social pressure = tax, cost of living always higher. the cost of the bike paths here is pure theft, for paint, cement blocks and stakes, The cost of adding two kilometers of bike lanes to Parkside Drive in Toronto is estimated to be $7.5 million. The project is expected to start as early as 2026, 136 km for 27 million$, Toronto is tighter than cities mentionned above. thank you for sharing.
Ugh, so many stupid people in the comments. Can you actually think for yourself And be mindfull?
I have the exact same quadlock mount for my bike. Its the best in its class!
Its a bike, do you really need a lane...
yep
STARTING TO LOOK LIKE YOU WON,T BE RE ELECTED EITHER MR.FORD!
Pay to add bike lanes than pay to remove 1-3yrs later. Then let me guess pay to put them back in?
LIE-berals and their Woke allies KEEP ASKING US what kind of city we want to live in......... and WE KEEP TELLING THEM WE DONT LIKE YOUR 15 MINUTE CITY URBAN DESIGN SCAM AND WE DONT LIKE YOUR WAR ON CARS................................. and in related news WE KEEP TELLING STUPID LIE-berals that if they want us to ride public transit THEN THEY BETTER GET A MOVE ON and evict all the dirty, smelly homeless types hanging out there and deal EFFECTIVELY with the assorted criminals and mentally ill transit users that intimidate ordinary riders - AND GREATLY EXPAND THE TRANSIT SYSTEM AS WELL so that it is faster and more efficient!!!!!!!!!!!!! SADLY, stupid LIE-berals REJECT ALL OUR PREFERENCES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unbelievable that these kinds of decisions are made by our so called leaders! I hope you can save your bike lanes.

Try following the HWY traffic Act . Police should hold bikers to the Law
I thought those lefties were all mad about climate change.
The irony is that destroying bike infrastructure will actually make the congestion experienced by cars worse.
Viel Glück und viel Erfolg.....

Full support from Edmonton!
Ironicaly, no bike lanes were used in this video.
That's not ironic firstly, it's a protest meant to show drivers what it's like when many cyclists take to the roads. Secondly, lots of people rode in the lane if they chose too. Best of luck!
@TheBikeLife It is ironic, because you're protesting the removal of bike lanes. If you can't see the irony in that, I can't help you. I've given you the information, eventually you will accept it. Secondly, people might have used the bike lanes off camera, but in the vid , you can clearly see the bike lanes are not being used; they're completely empty. Bless you.
Ford needs to wake up and start working for the people ...staying healthy, and reducing ones carbon footprint should not be punished!!!! HARDLY!!
❤First they take away your safety to bike, next they will take your EVERYTHING ❤
❤What a shame to push Canada backwards to Stone Age. ❤
Entitled chuckleheads...
LIE-berals and their Woke and Socialist allies keep trying to talk about "what kind of city we want to live in".......................................... and the fact that Ford got RE-ELECTED with the biggest majority ever awarded to an Ontario premier fairly SCREAMS: WE DONT WANT TO LIVE IN A LIE-beral 15 minute city!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ontario LIE-beral leader Stephen Del Duca offered transit riders who were marooned on buses in heavy traffic a few pennies off their fare.............................. while Ford offered to build highway 413 to divert truck traffic away from central Toronto and Ford also pushed ahead with building a MAJOR NEW SUBWAY LINE - and LIE-berals were SCORNED AND FORD WON IN A LANDSLIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LIE-berals DO NOT want to admit that their 15 minute city urban design SCAM IS DESPISED BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
While it's important to recognize that cyclists have the right to use the roads, we also need to acknowledge the complexities of a bustling city like Toronto. With millions of people relying on various services, including the transportation system, we must all share the space responsibly. For instance, cyclists, like all road users, should respect traffic lights and stop signs to ensure safety for everyone. I remember growing up, my mom always reminded me to be cautious when crossing the street because there are always bigger factors at play than we realize. It’s important for everyone-whether walking, cycling, or driving-to stay aware and be considerate of each other. Safety is a shared responsibility. While vehicle safety technologies are evolving to help protect pedestrians and cyclists, we should all be conscious of the potential risks, whether it's the weather, health, or mechanical issues. As a driver myself, I’ve had close calls with cyclists, but I try not to focus on the negative. In fact, I've noticed that some bike lanes are underused, and it’s great when cyclists take advantage of quieter streets when possible. I understand the importance of bike lanes, especially in busy areas, but we also need to keep in mind the broader picture. For example, in an emergency, if a bike lane blocks access for emergency services, it could delay critical help. It’s a tough balance, but I believe we can find a way to make both cyclists and drivers feel safe. We all love this city, and it's important to stay open-minded. Toronto is a dynamic place, and we all have a role in making it work smoothly. Doug Ford, as a leader, is focused on the wellbeing of Ontarians, and together, we can create a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone. Let's stay alert, stay positive, and enjoy life-it’s short, so let’s make the most of it!
No apology needed, you just don't understand how cars and trucks can coexist with bike lanes, sidewalks and other public transit in cities. Most freight of goods comes in via Trucks and some trains to depots on the outskirts of the city. Those are served by large vehicles like trucks on dedicated highways. From there food is brought by various sized trucks, some big some smaller to local distrbution warehouses or supermarkets. None of that is prevented or restricted by bike lanes.
@TheBikeLife there is more than just what you mentioned, there is a lot of services, people appointment etc, with the cost of life people are not driving just for pleasure, depending where they live is faster in vehicle, I recommend to city councillors to advertise, something like ( Toronto is a busy city if you don't need to drive in the rush hours we will appreciate,) Thank you have a great day!
@TheBikeLife have you seen the 401 it's 40 thousand truck per day, I recommend to pay for them to pass on the 407 for who doesn't need to stop in the city, in the rush hour.....they take a lot of space & I prefer use the city+ city is nicer.....
@@TheBikeLife your text is This text has a sentiment score of -100.0. This means that the overall sentiment or tone of this text is very negative / serious.
if we had better bike infrastructure there would be less cars and the people who actually did need to drive wouldn't have to deal with as much traffic. Affordable and reliable public transit would also help with the road maintenance and car traffic as well.
Bike lines do not cause congestion. Cars do.
Critical Mass is a UA-cam "like" I'm on a mf'in bike
I’m utterly in sympathy with Critical Mass, but unfortunately, they appear to have fallen directly into Ford’s trap. The bike lane issue, as well as the ludicrous “tunnel under the 401”, are just “dead cats”, to use Boris Johnston’s term for a red herring - and not to divert attention from the mess he’s making of this province. He doesn’t care about that. They’re silly projects meant to distract from the extremely damaging and corrupt nature of the rest of Bill 212 that includes despotic provisions for expropriating land from Ontario homeowners for highway 413 that is being smashed right through the Greenbelt, and more importantly it makes the building of this disastrous highway, that will come at an enormous cost to the taxpayer, much easier. Paper trails are coming out revealing that all of Ford’s corrupt developer buddies have bought much of the land the highway will use and the province is buying the land from them at exorbitant prices. So, exactly the same kind of blatant corruption that is now being investigated for when he tried the very same thing with housing developments in the Greenbelt. If his lips move, Ford is lying. Sadly, there is zero doubt that he will be successful with the 413 and that will spell the end of the Greenbelt since development will undoubtedly spring up all along the length of this useless, expensive and unwanted highway. But then, that’s the point, isn’t it? The removal of bike lanes is in fact a non-issue as far as Ford is concerned. But it is doing exactly what he had hoped - distracting attention from Ford’s real megaprojects that need addressing; and which need to be opposed. Ford doesn’t give a flying leap for Torontonians since they don’t vote blue anyway.
Did nobody think of this when Ford cut school funding, OHIP and other programs? Ontario re-elected him, you deserve the misery. And why is an MPP worried about city issues?
I would say many people thought about it, but not enough. Unfortunately Ford has solid support in rural and suburban areas that make up most votes in Ontario, but voter disengagement and low turnout is a major problem. The reason he cares about Toronto issues is for one he's from here (well Etobicoke) but he also has a hate on for the city that rejected him soundly for mayor after his brother turned the position into an international punchline.
but you don't vote 😂
Will this work? Suburban people won't vote differently if you ask me. The biggest problem is that a provincial governor controls the internal affairs of cities.
How is it we Canadians are dumb enough to vote these conservative Gov't into power? Look at Alberta and Saskatchewan as well? How dumb are we?
Full support from USA, our neighbor to the north which is actually 12 miles away from Ontario. #SafeStreets
Dutchie here. Protests on bikes are something I didn't know I needed in life. Go Toronto!

Power to the people.
well done guys, keep the faith
I don’t use bike lanes. I don’t mind them as a driver or as a cyclist and support their adoption and use for those who would rather use them. I find them dangerous and not suitable for my riding and I feel safer in the traffic than skirting it with slow bikers, pedestrians and a variety of parked cars and drivers who don’t know how to drive while near the lanes.
Fair enough. A lot of cyclists feel similarly, generally those who consider themselves roadies or high-speed, long-distance riders with a lot of miles on the road and a lot of confidence. I would hasten to add that some of the saddest deaths of cyclists in recent years have been roadbike riders, who often choose busier streets because of longer straightaways, climbs or lack of lights. But you're right that everyone should have the option to use a bike lane because it is demonstrably the safest way for the majority of cyclists
Full support from Berlin
Yes! Keep it up!
"Progressive" and "conservative" don't belong in the same sentence. They are literally opposites.
i wish you would separate from them and they would stop being subs and separate from you.
Oil greed is destroying humanity
Great initiative. I really hope those bike lanes will survive and the law repealed. Ford needs to go! Greetings from Alberta, where many of us are worried about the precedent.
No bike lane, no problem. Just ride the center vroom vroom i'm a car now!😅
but sadly it is a problem for many or even most cyclists. Greater chance of injury and more reasons not to bike in the first place.
Positive, vigorous cycling every day, every weather, and especially Canadian weather,.content I am here for.
Ford Nation once (and not long ago) supported the construction of cycling lanes adjacent to sidewalks so cyclists would be as far as practical from passing cars. Supported explicite in Toronto. It's sad to see Ontario fumble with good momentum.
