Disc brakes are…better!
My first thought on going back to disc brakes after years on rim brakes after buying my new Colnago V4RS Disc Brake SUPERBIKE!
This is totally subjective and just my thoughts but let me know what you think as well!

ANTIQUE S-WORKS SL6 6.6KG RIM BRAKE BIKE

A look through my now "Antique" S-Works SL6 6.6kg rim brake bike, with spec run down and weights included.
Less unboxing and more review something a chick would do. Oh look how pretty the boxes.
Great Video!!! I am on the berge of getting the V4RS frame set and I am between size 455 and 484. I am 174cm tall and 82 cm inseam, but I have a shorter torso therefore I am inclined for 455 as it provides a shorter reach. Could you tell me what is the length of the seat post and what is the minimum insert? My saddle height needs to be 74cm so I would like to know if the seat post is long enough on a 455 seattube length to reach my 74cm (saddles I use are roughly 3-3.5 tall) so therefore I would need the seatpost out 25.5 cm aprox. Many thanks in advance!
@@R8HG I’m 170cm and personally I’d always go smaller and add reach rather than the other way. I’m not with the bike right now but I would suggest a bike fit to clarify exactly what you need and the order the right size - it might cost a few hundred pounds but better that than a few thousands euros on the wrong frame.
Thanks a lot for the prompt feedback!
I have the same bike. Thinking of getting the same handlebars, whats your "review" of it a year later? thanks
Very good - I wish I'd got the 36cm instead of 38cm but that's on me. Had no issues, no complaints, very pleased
@@JH_Cycles cheers! i'm building the bike as we speak. your video kinda inspired me to get this color and also the tire color. looks amazing.
@@carrolla6121 Thanks so much, glad you like it and hope you love yours even more!
There is nothing better than cozying up next to the fireplace with a new Colnago.
what about the reach? some ppl say it's shorter than other/common bars (less than 75mm)
@@razorree seems ok to me but I don’t have a lot of bars to compare to
I would love to get this handlebar but I feel like it will be easier to win the lottery. There are always showing out of stock. Did you purchase it directly from their website?
@@germandiazblanco7852 I did - I messaged them on Instagram and they let me know when it was coming back into stock - they were really helpful
Ditto - I have emailed them several times over several months & still waiting - my concern now will be the quality of the bars if/when back in stock
@@gmen1305 For sure they've become a victim of their success - I recently requested a 36cm wide bar to test - still waiting to hear back. If you can get them, they are good! I'd recommend messaging on instagram and getting the inside scoop on when they might become available again - worked for me first time round
I know this is a couple months old, but I just ordered some. They are back in stock if you're still looking.
I still love my S Works SL5 tarmac rim brake weighing in at under 6.8 kg . I bought a new bike to replace it with disc brakes and just don’t like it as much , it’s also much heavier but supposedly more aerodynamic but I’m faster on my old S Works .
May i know what is your height for 420 size?
I’m 5’7 or 170cm
@@JH_Cycles thanks 🙏🏽
Love the traditional length Berk Lupina & the exposed cables (think ‘sprezzatura’ in fashion). 👍
Hi, I'm considering buying some of these did you buy direct from their website? Are you based in the uK?
Yeh I’m in the uk and ordered direct from their website 👍
@@JH_Cycles hey dude many thanks,
a REAL lightweight race bike
You seems to have similar body size as me (170 cm, 81 cm inseam I presume?). What is the size of this again? And how do you feel about it now?
@@sloikalamos feels great and it’s a 410
Hi there I just wanted to know how the handlebars were holding up and do you recommend them?
All good - comparing long term to other integrated bars I’ve had from canyon, roval and other Chinese brands these are just as good. Rock solid.
hi if I have 110 center center on giant attack what size should I take exs?
Are these the same as the AliExpress elite wheels?
Sorry no idea - I don’t use AliExpress but obviously always ensure they’re legit!
can you fit colnagos proprietary top cap with the multitool into this handlebar?
Good question! From memory I think technically you could but the shape wasn’t a very good match so it didn’t look the best
A converted colnago into a cyclocross! Totally hideous, are you reliving your youth!
Is the TPU included in the box?
No, they were purchased at the same time with the wheels
Thank you very much! So, using the website system, we have to add 10/15 mm at least😅
So do they measure shorter or longer then typical integrated bars
The Tan side-walled GP5000 25mm is 35g lighter per tire than the cream version. Easy 70 grams of weight 😅
Does anyone know wether Camapa EPS-Cabels fit through?
Sorry - no idea…been about 10 years since I had campy groupsets
What is the saddle you are using? Can you share the link?
It’s a Berk Lupina - stock varies depending on country but I got mine from Sigma Sports UK
Curious, as I’ve been waiting since the 31st of December.. how long did they take to arrive? Thanks 😊
Around 4 weeks but sounds like you’ve encountered Chinese new year when you ordered maybe 🎉
You have to measure from the bottom for stem length
Hey thanks for the video!! I'm thinking buying one of these 2nd hand. Have you ever had problems with bb creaking using 30 mm spindle?
I'd recommend it - probably the best bike I've had. I had a c-bear BB in there and it was silky smooth with no creaks. Before that I had the standard sram bb and then some wheels manufacturing shim/inserts and that was less than ideal - bit noisy and not great.
@@JH_Cycles thanks a lot for the feedback. The one I'm considering comes with the s works carbon crank which is this is less likely to creak since you have no adapters
Good luck - I'm sure you'll love it@@Zozas_The_Cyclist
Hambini bracket on mine, perfect.
Personally ride Campagnolo Record BUT that throw is normal (Anti vibration thing) prevent misshifts -I do the mechanical jobs on all my friends bikes and I've noticed that on Durace, Ultegra and 105 . Obviously your gloves are too thick having to program your shifters that way.(But to each his own)- Try Castelli Spectacolo or Perfetto or even Fox mtb winter gloves thay are warm but still thin enough to feel stuff!!! ;)
Absolutely Horrid!!!! Ride the bike come rain, sun, snow, hail, sleat, wind... Just get the right clothes!! (Castelli, Assos, Gore..) and do the TLC on the bike as soon as you get back... happy rides!
Hi! Great video! A size 42? How tall are you? Thanks!
Hey, I'm 5"7 - about 170cm tall. The sizing is weird but it is what it is!
@@JH_Cycles Thanks! Is that a Wahoo Bolt you have and do you know if EXS has a short computer mount so it does not stick out too far?
Yes it is - I;d say it sticks out a bit further than is ideal BUT it;s well made and fits the bard well@@BrandonAquino-mu5fl not sure if other gamins or wahoo models are bigger hence it has to be a generic size to fit all
Can you confirm if the 65mm valves are long enough? I am in the same questioning now as you were : are 65mm long enoughnor willmI need the 85mm valves....
Yes! 65mm were just fine for me
@@JH_Cycles Thx for quick respond! From todays perspective (after a few months) would you go again for both: Elite Drive 50D wheels and TPU Tubes?
Definitely - not had any issues at all - has been a good setup for me@@snowking2357
Is the V4Rs steerer 1 1/4” (oversize) or 1 1/8”? Did you have to use the shim for the EXS bars?
I prefer rim brakes. The bike is more beautiful
I hear you!
I love rim brakes
That frame is beautiful 👌
I think so too!
Where did you buy that?
I got from my local store in Edinburgh called Edinburgh Bike Fitting - great shop and great value
@@JH_Cycles thanks 🙏
How much is that?
Are you trying to get me divorced?
@@JH_Cycles nah. I just want to know.😅
This is a great video, thank you! Funnily enough I bought a second hand sl6 frameset from someone who also used Lordgunn in the last minute, and im looking at building a very similar set up to yours... Including Favero pedals, glad to hear you like them.
Glad I could help! Good luck
nEis job :-) i live in Germany and are curious on buying the same handlebar... How much did you pay in total ie. including taxes? How much was the tax.
I just paid the retail price, all the taxes were included to the UK
great build, i was wondering the size 52 is the same as the sl8? also just want to know your height and inseam? im also comsidering building a sl6 but not sure (im 5'9 with 30" inseam) thank you! more bikes stuff!
I’m 5’7 - I’d say you’re almost certainly not a 52 but if you’re going to spend that kind of money on a bike then deffo get a bike fit first to check sizing!
@@JH_Cycles bro thank you so much for the this info! i appreciate it! also maybe a performance review of this bike :)
@@erickcustomersupport3677 the bike has gone! Moved on to the Colnago - have you watched the videos yet?
Promo'SM 😝
Ello! Do you happen to have the diameter for the bar end plugs? Looking to weight weenie them.
Hi, I’m away at the moment but they’re standard - used the same pair of carbon plugs on my last 3 builds
@@JH_Cycles Thanks! Which ones are you using, just so i can reference to the ones I've got?
An eBay special - no brand and weigh about 4g - carbon for the win! @@empyreanw0w0w
Why all the bike upgrade eventually end up with black on black frame? It is like driving a lambo with stealth matt black paint. Do you guys do it to conceal the cost of the bike? For me i like flashy color. If im going to spend so much on a bike, i want the whole town to turn their head when i ride pass.
Well…as you say, for you you’d like it loud. For me…I don’t.
Hi JH Cycles, my front brake hose comes out of the top of my fork, do you remember if there is a hole that goes from the round section that clamps onto the fork through to the handlebar hoods? (I couldnt tell in the video.) Thanks
I think that you could get that to work, there are holes on the underside of the bars - send some pics to EXS on their insta and ask - they’re super helpful
My only concern is how noodley they are going to be
I'd drop them a message on Instagram - that's how I connected them and they're super helpful and respond quickly - I'm sure they can advise better
For me a groupset can really win it all, in the Crankset, and the Sram's cranks are just a thing of beauty.
Is it any good for a Rim Brale bike? or the cable outings are way to internal integration focused?
Yes I think this would work OK but would of course depend on the cable routing - where there’s a will there is always a way
Yeah there are holes under the bars so it seems it will be ok with di2/etap atleast where you only have the brake cables to worry about. Brakecable+shiftcable would probably be a tight fit.
It's the incorrect use of the word 'better' in titles like yours that is provoking arguments. Disc is never 'better' than rim brakes. Disc brakes have more stopping power, which is something completely different. It's a kin to telling all cyclists that cars are 'better', then going on to banning the use of bicycles; you can see how that's not going to go down well with cyclists. Rim brakes and disc brakes are suitable for different cyclists. Why can't people just let them co-exist and stop the move to ban all rim brakes? Rim brakes for alloy rims and disc brakes for carbon rims? Let people choose?
Who WANTS less stopping power? Totally get buying or keeping a rim brake bike to save money but that doesn't mean they aren't less good🙃 I have a 2006 Subaru Forester. It would be ridiculous for me to not concede that newer ones are better...partially because it has 4 disc brakes instead of 2😂
@@veganpotterthevegan Anyone who can already brake well enough for their riding style will happily give up any additional stopping power because they know they won't use it. more stopping power does not mean better when you already have adequate stopping power. Mini pumps versus track pumps. Lighter cycle helmets versus full crash helmets. People would gladly give up any performance that they would not use if it means gaining advantages in other areas that they would actually use. Disc brakes are not a universal replacement for rim brakes because they are inferior in some ways that might be important to the rider. Stop making it out that disc brakes are a universal replacement for rim brakes. Carbon rims = disc brakes, alloy rims = rim brakes; how difficult is that to understand? Most importantly it's about letting people choose what they want.
@@longdang2681 that's ridiculous. You never know when something in front of you may result in you needing more braking ability, even if you already have the best/disc brakes.
@@veganpotterthevegan Of course you can judge the stopping power you need, if you are carrying cargo you would naturally ride more slowly(safely). Emergency braking is dangerous. Instead of having more stopping power when emergency braking; the solution is to not put yourself in a dangerous situation that requires emergency braking. Disc brakes is not an excuse for having poor road safety. It's also a moot point because the key point is that you let the rider choose which braking system they want. People are against the purposeful reduction in choice for consumers(purely for the intention of upselling consumers to less desirable options). How would you like it if all bicycles were banned because cars are 'better' ? Let carbon rims riders use disc brakes, and let alloy rim riders use rims brakes. Let people choose the best choice for what they want the bike to do?
Look amazing. what size is that, 49?
Size 420
Quite the journey, so many bikes!
There were so many more planned (but not enough money!)
You made a bit of a mis-statement about the Canyon. You said "Ultegra mechanical disc brakes," I think you meant "Ultegra mechanical groupset with (hydraulic) disc brakes." Over the last 15 years, I've had all types of road disc brakes -- all mechanical (BB-7), mechanical/hydraulic (TRP, Juin), and hydraulic (SRAM). They've all been pretty good. I've never had a problem with the pads "sticking," though I have had issues with squeal with the BB-7s. I have spent the vast majority of my 50 years on road bikes riding with rim brakes, though, and I can't even count the number of times that I've encountered the lack of braking when the rims got wet, either from riding in the rain or even just riding through a puddle. Don't get me started on when I replaced my aluminum wheels with carbon ones on my primary road bike. Even though I bought a $50 pair of Swiss stop carbon pads, I really felt unsafe if there was even a hint of moisture in the air. So yeah, disc is a bit better on aluminum rim wheels, and if you have carbon wheels, disc is the much safer way to go.
