Don't feel bad. Many Chinese in Vancouver also don't speak English after living here for 40 yrs. And Chinese is a very difficult language to learn so it's acceptable to be ignorant. This kind of thing happens in Japan among western expats also because Japanese is too hard to learn also. So dont feel bad. Chinese should have used a phonetic writing system like most languages if they want learners to learn it. Hanzi is too hard for most of us. It's their fault for making it so damn hard to learn

Starting off it was just the whole introducing a much wider food choice and basically telling your partner I think you’ll like this from this culture and telling them Chinese food is not just chicken chow mien and egg fried rice 😫

I think it's maybe more accurate to call it a 'mixed-culture' or 'cross-cultural' relationship rather than a 'mixed-race' relationship, since it's more about cultural differences rather than race (I'm mixed race myself btw, SE Asian/Scandinavian, but look like a HKer, so my Cantonese got good very fast because everyone speaking to me in canto)
