Church Tree coast redwood, one of the largest hollow trunk bases. Note: water moves up through sapwood. Interpret my comments in the video that loss of internal heartwood removes a moist internal seal, exposing sapwood or xylem inner surface to damage and drying. And no wood in the middle, means loss of any roots beneath, that many solid trees have to some degree. For more about coast redwoods,...

There are only approximately 80,000 giant sequoias left in their nato range habitat native, in the United Kingdom we have approximately 400,000 giant sequoias planted here. I plan to make that 400,002 Giants Sequoias quite soon. I see it as a backup population for the native population up in the hills of California.
That would be a nice addition for the UK. There should be a couple million planted in the USA outside the native range, but I don't think anyone is completing a full inventory. I passed about 250 of them the other day between home and a residence I was pruning at about 25 minutes from here. I think the UK climate is similar to parts of Oregon here.
How do you know its diameter, surely, you can only measure its circumference?
DBH diameter equals diameter averaged. So the circumference divided by 3.14 is how that's calculated. DBH is the standard common for many tree registries and urban inventory lists.
They say Keith Richards was in kindergarten when that thing was planted
What a gorgeous tree.
I was surprised to find one in France at one of the château in the louré valley.
In the mid 1800’s it was a huge status symbol to have them on your Country Estate… England has Hundreds that are 150+ years old… they need the misty-fog in the morning for the top of the trees to soak up the water… that’s how they grow so tall…
Phenomenal! How do you think these would go in a subtropical climate? I live near Brisbane, Australia, and I have 3 (so far) Coast Redwoods going great, but they are much more suited to my climate than the Giants. We get around 36in of rain annually, the majority of which is in summer, with highs around 80-90F in summer and lows hovering around freezing in winter, with usually only a handful of hard frosts. I have a few acres and I'm creating a forest near a creek, to trap moisture and keep summer temps down in that area. I have English and Pin Oaks, Swamp Cypress, Maple, and a few Coast Redwoods so far. I really want to add some Giant Redwoods but I feel our summers are too warm and humid (think far SE USA). There are some growing only 20 minutes away from me, but they are 1,500ft higher up than where I am with cooler temps and higher rain year round!
I can't find the answer for that question but if there's an arboretum in Brisbane good chance they could answer that question for you. Especially if they have one growing in the collection.
Theres one in central Georgia, but it’s not nearly as big. I think it’s only about a 100yrs old also.
Pre Ice Age it's possible that was in it's native range. They were all over North America.
Good point ...
beautiful! my redwood seeds are in the mail, going to plant them here in Croatia
wow
They have not updated their website or any of these videos in a few years. I wonder if any new discoveries have been made since its 2024 and they are talking about 2020 at the latest. I am so curious if they truly found a giant with more wood volume than general sherman. Hailstorm is listed as the largest coast redwood, but it's only the 4th largest tree being exceeded by General sherman, general grant, and president tree still.
You are mistaken, probably reading an anonymous site with no contact information and riddled with various fake information. Hailstorm is a champion hemlock, not a redwood. So you are off track about species, let alone size, etc.. That's what can happen when people read and believe online content from complete unknowns who can't be verified or fact checked. Also, the redwood cluster you seem to be referring to is not a redwood, but 3 redwoods. Several people have photographed it and the back side in particular shows all 3 trunks clearly visible. So even by any other name, it's not even the 10th biggest single biggest coast redwood. If clusters are to be included, then the double titan in the Grove of Titans is greatly wider diameter and probably bigger.
That carbon was a surprise at the end!
came here from Twelve Trees by Daniel Lewis
Plant more in your area so they can spread and increase their range!
Soil compaction and its detrimental effects is not in dispute.
That's why I don't dispute, but teach 1000s of viewers so they don't get mislead by people who dispute that any walking around trees is detrimental.
Is there any photos of the largest redwood ever found ?
There's a photo of one of the two largest ever measured and recorded in a Blue Lake Museum down in California. It wasn't exceedingly wide, but still plenty wide with little taper and a lot of height.
43 ft high is surprising. I have lost depth perception, and it is so dark in there, I would have guessed 25 to 30.
I had a laser rangefinder with me so I kept aiming it into various directions of the darkness above and kept track of the highest reading.
I want one ! How old is this tree?
My guess is about 300 years.
@@TallTreesClub Impressive !!!
what a wonderful tree, thanks for sharing
I’m planting 3 of them next month on my land. It’s great that you remeasure the tree each year and have found that it is still growing at a rate of one foot a year👍
Me too. Im in Europe, but this video is inspiring
@@universeslap I watched several videos of very large ones growing in different Places in Europe and a couple videos of people that planted them within the last 10 years. Anyways it showed me that it can be done so I’ve just been waiting for spring lol
the pointed top means it's still kgrowing!
It's been growing about 1 foot per year the past few years. I didn't measure it last summer or autumn but hope to before the month of May to record last years growth increment also.
If I had the land with that tree I would make the best treehouse ever, like a mini elvish Tower.
Does this tree produce seedlings? We've got some sequoias on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis, but they don't produce seedlings here.
I looked for seedlings but haven't seen any yet. But we plan to keep looking every few years. There's not herbicide use, so if anything does germinate and grow, it should continue.
Spectacular! Thanks!
There is one in the New Forest in southern England that was planted during the reign of Queen Victoria.
Film it please.
Yes I’d love to see it
Friggin huge for a planted tree!! Great if Mario!
Parts of Southern Oregon are indeed native range for Sequoiadendron and the range is currently moving north through Oregon!
nice music to go with the beauty of the tree
Thank you. Apparently this tree has grown quite a bit since the time we found it around 2011. Michael Taylor sent a note earlier this year that he had remeasured it and it rose to 273.3 feet. There's now an extra growing season, so it's probably 274 feet tall. It was averaging 1/2 foot per year.
Thank you for protecting this precious tree! I would love 💗 to see it in person and if I ever had the opportunity, I would know exactly how to not harm the plants around it and also get a great photograph 😊!!! Thanks for your video!
Nice! I am growing some i Europa too !
I'm really pissed. Why has it taken so long to find your vids? The first and only time I have ever seen the Redwoods was 20 years ago. Since that day I have been completely fascinated with them. I would take time at least 5 or 6 times a year to search the internet for info with no avail. Thank you so much for the time and knowledge you share about these magnificent beings. I only hope that I can one day witness their beauty again.
Great! WHY DON"T YOU JUST GO AHEAD AND LET A BIGFOOT GO TOO? You're absolutely crazy!
Thank you for posting this
look at those cones! very healthy tree
What’s the song name
Not sure. Something in UA-cams soundtrack collection for using with videos.
These trees are absolutely amazing! However I see ZERO reason to downplay Giant Sequoia. First off, the largest Giant Sequoia are no longer standing (Father of the Forest and Mother of the Forest were bigger than General Sherman). Secondly, Sierra Redwood reach 3200+ years in age. That is IMPRESSIVE. And Sierra Redwood have reached 316 feet in height so while not the tallest, it's nothing to sneeze at!
To call facts "down playing" means hiding new facts and discoveries would satisfy you more. That's not how I work. My website and social media posts are aimed at furthering education. Also, coast redwoods have been ring-counted over 3000 years and historically were bigger than the other trees you mentioned. So the latter part of your reply is sort of like chasing a shadow. Your first sentence makes sense.
ua-cam.com/video/Av7wU5zbIAo/v-deo.html
Did you see the video I made making the genus distinction between the coast redwoods and mountain redwoods? I thought I did a good job :)
I don't think I've seen your video, but as a Certified Arborist and redwood expert I know differences between the two genus and species. The coast redwoods are the widest and tallest growing of the two, and the Sequoiadendron are comparable for size with variation in foliage, cone, habitat. etc..
This tree is completely enormous. This video inspires me a lot, both the sequoia and sequoiadendron are phenomenal trees and I hope to see many from both species thrive. It's funny how they are so often mixed up even though they are different genus. I'm guessing because they are both gigantic!!! Did you know there are written journals of eucalyptus Australia (Victoria, NSW and Tasmania) that had several eucalyptus species with ancient old growth that was said to rival that of both the coast redwood and giant sequoia??! Sometimes, they would chop them down just to record measurements (if it was impossible to take the timber with them).... So sad and destructive. I've seen some of the old growth eucalyptus, some only 400-700 years old, and they are close in size to the coast redwood. Add on another few thousand years and I could certainly see how they could be as big. Where they grow, it's so wet, moist, nutrient rich and protected, it feels very similar to the Coast redwood habitat in Northern Cali and Oregon. Even if the eucalyptus didn't grow quite as big, the mind can't help but wonder about the many ancient groves that would be standing today if things went a little differently. I'm an Aussie that lives in Canada, so I have been lucky enough to see lots of old growth and it has been one of the most impactful things on my life. I encourage anyone who hasn't to do it. It will change your perspective on many things.
I have a few of them in pots but have yet to see one like that, wish I could.
very nice specimen indeed.
Beautiful tree.
I'm not sure I understand the point of being derogatory toward giant sequoias by calling them sino's, or whatever. They both share the same lineage and are linked through the subfamily sequoioideae. Sure, technically giant sequoias lineage is the genus sequoiadendron whereas coast redwoods are linked to genus sequoia, but if you zoom out just one more click you're talking about two plants that aren't that far apart. Giant sequoias are bigger, get over it. They're both awesome species, celebrate them.
It's not derogatory but a fact. Sequoiadendron as a "Sequoia" is a Sequoia in name only. And apart from just 2 or 3 individual trees, the largest of each species are virtually identical for size volume. Meanwhile, as an arborist and expert on redwoods, the rest you wrote is common knowledge. But if you find something original you care to share, record it on video and share the link sometime.
Very informative video thanks, Mario. I planted 2 sempervirens in Istanbul in 1997. They are now 45 ft tall.
They should do fine for many more years. We're in a drier southern Oregon 2 hours from the redwood coast, and our inland town gets about 20 inches of yearly rain. Coast redwoods do okay here. From what I searched online, you get about 6 inches more rain per year and your summer highs are less than around here. Cheers, Mario Vaden
There were old growth stumps in my backyard that I put a hotub on. Absolutely massive. Sad they all got logged.
Waooo
Wonderful, plant a few more
Maybe it was a seed that blew further north
Wish that would happen more often !!
@@TallTreesClub haha no doubt great vid as always Sir Mario
Isn’t southern Oregon in their range tho?
no the Sierra Nevada's where the Sequoias are, while the northern part of the sierra nevada range does border the cacade range like near Lassen Volcano, in eastern central California where sequoias are, are like about 350 miles to the south of oregon in eastern california, I think sequoia used to be all over nevada and out to colorado but their range has been shrinking for thousands of years
Yes it is their native range
And their range is expanding more north into Oregon! You can look it up and read about it!
