Don’t do either !!! Implants are still far far behind where they should be
I'm a 5'3", small-boned female with osteopenia - 3 "no-no's" for hip resurfacing. Every hip ortho on the planet turned me down, with the exception of Dr. DeSmet in Belgium and Dr. Gross in SC. I'm really active; I do yoga, pilates and workouts that depend on flexibility and I knew I didn't want a replacement. Dr. Gross didn't even bat an eye at my case. He said, "Come on down; I know I can help you." I had my hip resurfaced with him in 2016 and I had a pretty perfect outcome. I think he said he used the smallest hip cup size he has on me. He also has a recovery program for low-bone density so that petite females can have this procedure. If this is you, he's the only one in the States to trust. I was back to yoga and pilates in 9 months (I probably could've gone back faster, but I was conservative during recovery just to be safe), I continue to be pain-free, and my hip feels about 98% like a normal hip. Dr. Gross is the best.
this guy gave me my life back. i just turned 39 and have no restrictions what so ever, been 6 years since the surgery. Minor soreness with excess activity but most days i forget my implant is there
I cannot do this exercise past my middle finger
i have had double hip resurfacing but experience severe nerve pain through lower back, scar sites then legs when trying to do some steady state running. anyone else had this?
I'm the anomaly, age-wise. I'm almost 75, and have always been very active up until this past winter. I like to hike, mountain bike, do inline street-skating, and up until last year was roller skating at skateboard parks. I also used to ski in the most distant past. I'm still skating and biking some, but mostly on the flats and still am extremely painful and can hardly walk the day after exercise. I've been putting off hip replacement because I figured I'd have to give up skating altogether because of the fall risk, even though I wear protective gear and hip pads. According to the doctors I have very mild osteopenia. This resurfacing procedure looks promising. Are there any Medicare supplemental insurance companies that cover this procedure? I'm considering dropping my Kaiser insurance and getting something else before getting hip surgery.
Can you please make a video using a dowel or rod to strengthen the back for better posture? Can this exercise be modified for a prone position?
💯🥳
Dr. Gross did my hip resurfacing April 2023, I could not have asked for a better doctor or procedure. I am back to playing ice hockey only 6 months after the surgery and going strong @ 53. No limitations at all. Highly recommend the surgery and Dr. Gross.
Metals are TOXIC in hip replacements. Do your research folks!!!
Being disabled is also toxic. Lack of exercise, injuring other body parts doing daily things because your hip just won't bend anymore so you have to bend at other places in odd ways, no fun in life, eating anti inflammatories like it's candy in a vain attempt to sleep at night, the list goes on. Pick your poison.
This guy is a butcher , operated on me in August of 2022 .Was left with a mess and have had 5 more operations to correct what he had done to me and am expecting at least 2 more. Dr.James seems to have to operate on most patients at least 2 to 5 times. Was told before surgery that my surgery was a common one he had done many times , said I would more than likely take 30 to 90 days to heal up. I am now in to 22 months of pain and bleeding . 3 more doctors trying to fix what he had done to me . Right after his first surgery I wake up and he comes in my room saying he would have to operate again .Do yourself a favor and try anyone but this guy for your surgery . Also have been unable to work losing all my savings and retirement . I would never of thought he was going to ruin my life.
This brings hope to my life
Is there online ot section how much dollar
I am so happy to see this alternative for total hip replacement. I am person with Hemophilia-A (46 Years Old) and my orthopedic surgeon sys both hips arthritic therefore, he recommend me to go for a total hip replacement. I would love to do this resurfacing surgery. Am I eligible candidate for this surgery.?
I saw a foot surgeon. He said I have hallux rigidus. I have no pain in the big toe. I have one are in my foot that hurts. I can point right in that area. I have pain from the top of my foot down to the bottom of my foot. It’s in the 2nd metatarsal and I have a catching in there.
I need help Dr Gross please!
my surgeon told me that the technology for hip resurfacing isn’t advanced enough to get a permanent bind of the new material to the femural head. if there was a way to make that surfacing bind better, he’d recommend it all day long but he said the resurfacing just doesn’t last long enough. has that issue been solved? 62 yr old, bone on bone with no cartilage, strong healthy bones and very active athlete; big wave surfer, dirt bike rider.
I read a lot of papers and I learned that the femur head size is very important for the success of resurfacing. The larger the better. Larger than 55mm is excellent
I'm so glad I found this page! I'm in North Myrtle Beach, age 59 and both hips need resurfacing. I'm in good shape otherwise. Active, fit, weightlifter. Just had my hips MRI'd...
Which muscles are worked in this exercise
Are you doing ceramic on ceramic, or ceramic on poly, or just metal on metal
Had both of my hips resurfaced in 2005, still going strong!! Thank you Dr. Gross
Is Hip Resurfacing possible for people with avascular necrosis? Are there any experts in this field in Southern California you can refer?
I have the same question.left hip with avn
I also have the same question, could someone please answer this?
Are you comfortable with performance of hip resurfacing on active women?
Is the MoM something to be concerned about?
Thank you for your video. I had my hip resurfaced in Norway in 2009, 14 years ago. I had to withstand cosmic pains until then. I consciously choose BHR over the Total Replacement, because its costruction is more natural, stable and bone saving. I have almost normal range of motion. But they have stoped to operate BHR about 12 years ago. They say, the main reason is the metal ions produced by friction of metal to metal prostetic. They are afraid of causing canser... I am afraid it will not come back...
So nobody is currently offering resurfacing in here in Norway?
@@maristamn Nei, så vidt jeg vet, sluttet de med denne protesen 1 år etter jeg fikk min protese. Du kan kontakte Kysthospitalet i Bergen, for det var de som opererte den i Norge.
Resurfaced by Dr. Gross in 2021. He is correct. It was a miracle! I couldn't be more pleased.
Dear sir I'm a patient of ankylosing spondylitis and I want to hip surfacing in your hospital please guide me please
Dr Gross has done 4 orthopaedic surgeries for me. I trust him with my life. He is an expert when it comes to hip resurfacing. He does research constantly and is a leader when it comes to making things work. Had my 2nd hip resurfacing done 7 wks ago and I'm delighted to say I'm getting my life back again. Looking forward to getting out and DOING things again!!!
thankyou for the video, that was very informative. I am a 43yo male who is into judo and brazilian jiu jitsu. I'm booked in for a hip resurfacing next month due to fairly advanced hip arthritis. I chose the procedure exactly because I'm hoping it will allow me to return to my sports once i'm recovered.
When you say swimming (in the first part of the recovery stage), are you talking about floating around, or are you talking aggressive lap swimming (flip turns, butterfly/breast stroke kicks, kicking drills)?
Wait...tell why you can't do a gait analysis on running again??
Can I ask how does sport impact on the wear of the resurfacing please? Do they therefore last longer than a full replacement and what is the size of the ball?
🎉 P R O M O S M
This is very good information, and certainly happy to hear age is not a limiting factor. I'm a male (average size/wight), now 68, in good shape, and 10 years ago I(at 58) had a hip resurfacing procedure on my right leg, done at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in NYC (a top notch facility). I now have a problem with my left hip, which is no surprise to me given my original diagnosis. I have had zero complications, until recently I'm very active in different sports. In a recent follow up test to check for ions in my blood stream, the results showed no problems at all, and that's after 10 years of use of the (BHR) resurfacing components. However, after consulting another doctor at HSS for my left leg he told me he would not do a resurfacing procedure on me, only because I was now 68. I found that so strange because my right leg was a told success (no negative reactions, the resurfacing components currently in place appear to be in good condition (from an X ray, meaning no obvious malfunctions/wear & tear). Hearing Doctor Gross's opinion, given his level of expertise, it sounds like I need another opinion, hoping I can in fact have another hip resurfacing procedure on my left leg, expecting similar results. Thank you Doctor Gross for this excellent video.
How are we dealing with metal debris which used to plague older metal on metal prosthesis?
The videos on hip replacement indicate that the high-density cross-linked polyethylene acetabular cup liner with a ceramic ball moving within it wears very little compared to older procedures using metal-to-metal contact. This video says there will be metal-to-metal wear with hip resurfacing implants. Other videos mention that very old procedures used metal-to-metal movement and caused severe complications, namely metallosis.
I had both hips resurfaced '05 and '06.. age 41 and 42 'ish... starting to get some pain in one hip... nervous.. I am a former pro world rated MMA and Muay Thai fighter and teacher/coach.. I still coach and train regularly... I would like to continue... Perhaps a revision is needed?... and what type of implant would be used?..

Had a resurfacing 17 years ago. Noticed my CR and CO blood levels have been rising over time. Can a Resurfacing be revised with ceramic components?
What did you find out? This is my exact concern with resurfacing vs replacement.
@@8180634 Sought two opinions. The surgeon that performed the BHR and another that rebuilt my shoulder. Both said the same thing. The femur head would likely be degraded after so long so a total hip replacement would be the best option.
Can a metal on metal Birmingham resurfacing implant be replaced with a better material instead of metal on metal? I have a 17 year old BHR and noticed that my CO and CR numbers are starting to increase in my blood work.
Sorry to hear about your elevated numbers. The problem with metalossis, it’s irreversible unless the causative material (your prosthetic hip) is removed. I’m a surgeon and I too require a hip replacement due to FAI & subsequent arthritis. I’d prefer resurfacing but realize metalossis is a significant concern. Good luck
They have a new implant called Polymotion coming out soon. It’s metal on polyethylene. Might be a game changer.
I read an article that they experimented a drug that could lower the CO and CR levels. I don't know if it works for everyone. Better do a research and talk to some doctors.
Do you have a listing of orthos in the Washington, DC area, who do this type of hip resurfacing that you can share? Thank you.
It’d probably be worthwhile to travel and have Dr. Gross perform it if possible. This is a complicated procedure and he’s got excellent results.
Does resurfacing use cross-linked polyethilene plastics? Dr.Yun says research shows cross linked type lasts 5x longer than regular ones.
Where is Dr Yun operating?
Really nice information, thorough, kind, informative and genuinely caring. Thanks for all of your caring, information, education and support Dr. Tom Gross!!! 🙂😎
