Katie Reviews "The Beach Boys" by The Beach Boys and other news!

Some exciting news and a few thoughts about The Beach Boys by The Beach Books published this year. One small error I wish to point out. When I say "It wasn't necessary to put more emphasis on showing how much Landy's involvement kept Brian away from the Beach Boys.." I meant to say it was! Sorry for the confusion.

Tbh it's been weighing heavy on my mind, and I've been assuring myself with two things: that Brian is being cared for by his daughters Carnie and Wendy, and also that since his cognitive abilities have already been up and down for decades maybe it won't quite as much of a horrible jarring experience for him as it is for other dementia patients. It's strange to me how I've really only been into the Beach Boys for the past several months now and yet I feel this palpable ache at the thought of Brian no longer being in the world. I think I've grown some kind of soul connection to him, and I hope that when he does go the media will focus more on celebrating his life than all the tragedy.

VH1s Endless Harmony is the definitive documentary of the Beach Boys! It came out in 1998 and went all the way to 1998! Disney plus got to Pet Sounds, then skimmed over the rest on about 10 minutes! I went back to Endless Harmony and when they talked about Pet Sounds, it was less than half over! If this is part 1 of a Disney plus series, then it could be the best. They did a great job on the 61-66 era. But as a whole, I hate it!

This video just magically appeared on my timeline, and I saw the thumbnail and thought, "Whoa, that's Katie Webb! Been a long time! Wonder who stole that picture from her FB timeline!" But....nope, it was actually Katie. :) My wife and I had our Brian moment backstage, totally accidentally. It was short, but Brian smiled, shook our hands, and listened to what we had to say. (My wife to this day still freaks out. "HE SAID MY NAME!!!") It was all of about ten seconds or so, but man, what a thrill.. And yeah -- we too noticed his extremely blue eyes.

Narrators can totally trash anything so long as it is well planned out in advance! I agree that leaving out Dennis and Carl’s deaths is an unfair oversight. Not anything being added on Landy is a tragic mistake! Or maybe very deliberately done! To devalue others and hold them up in public is a devastating move to make! Lawsuits are made from this! Perhaps all of the Wilson Family and other families are not pleased with this documentary either! Given time, you don’t know what could happen. Or they will just turn the cheek and wait for the next blow. You make so many good points! Thanks for posting!

well done, Katie. Your thinking matches mine pretty well. Here's my review of Smile AI as found on Dae Lims channel: Well, 8 months have gone by and it is time for a more fulsome response. I could write a 10,000 word article on Dae Lims SMILE re-creation (and perhaps I will), but I'll try to be concise. I am one of the Smile "O.G.s"--that is, I was a Smile freak nearly 50 years ago. I consider myself one of the top 500 or so "experts" in the world (as are many of the people who have commented below). I made my first Smile mix tape in 1976. At the time I had never heard a Smile mix tape; I didn't even know it was a "thing"; I just wanted to make a coherent musical statement using the music that I loved. I had limited resources to work with--Smiley Smile, the "completed" versions of Surf's Up, Cabinessence, Cool, Cool Water and Our Prayer, as well as a couple of bootlegs. Fortunately today we have a wealth of source material. All of my mix tapes started with Our Prayer, then moved through Gee and Heroes & Villains. They always ended with Surf's Up. It turns out that many people had the same idea. I have always been astonished by the beauty and wonder of this music, and attracted by the "what if" aspect. None of us knows what Smile would've sounded like in a "final" version. Hell, Brian himself didn't know what he was going to do with it, so anyone who claims they "know" what a final version would have entailed is an idiot or a liar. Thus, any intelligent attempt to piece it together is valid. Much has been made of Dae Lims sequencing. It is not how I imagined it. An effort must be made to empty your mind of preconceived notions and receive the music as if it were brand new. In my view, this version of Smile, had it appeared in 1967, would be cited as the greatest album ever made! Yes, better than Pet Sounds and Pepper. I have listened all the way through dozens of times, and cannot finish it without tears in my eyes. In these 38 minutes, Dae Lims gives us a unique look at "what could have been". This project--conceived by Brian (with Van Dyke Parks) and recorded by Brian and The Beach Boys--with finishing touches by Dae Lims--stands as a monumental work of art. A longtime friend heard it and said he didn't care for it. "WTF?" was my response. He said, "it's not in the official order". I don't know if the "official" order he was referring to was the Beach Boys release of a few years ago or the 2004 Brian Wilson version. Again, there IS no official order, and BRIAN HIMSELF didn't know how he was going to finish it. An effort must be made to approach this honestly as if you were hearing it for the first time in 1967. This will not stop the "what would SMILE have been like" parlor game. Would Brian have included Good Vibrations? Would he have recorded additional instrumentation or vocals (almost certainly)? Would he have made a double album? The possibilities are endless and there will never be a definitive answer. There are so many nice touches that I can't list them without going off on a thousand tangents. The point is, Dae LIms has an uncommon degree of skill and taste. His A.I. voices are spot-on. He has a producer's knack for imagining what "should" be there. There are occasions where you can hear Dae singing, but generally the added voices are extremely realistic representations of Brian, Mike, Carl, Al and Dennis. my original review at the time of release 9 months ago: Good Lord this is gorgeous. Too many highlights to list, but I'll mention a couple, using examples from Surf's Up: the swelling chorus of voices at 36:42 and unexpected key change; the Brian falsetto @36:52; the Mike bass voice 37:05; the lonely tenor sax signature at 37:14; the growing discordant undercurrent at about 37:54 which gives way to the ending (which I won't give away--"follow the bouncing ball"). I am familiar with Rembrandt, Mozart, Martin Luther and the other greats of modern art and philosophy, but for me, this is the high water mark of Western Civilization. Do yourself a favor: pour a glass of wine, find a comfy chair, slip on some headphones, close your eyes and spend the next 38 minutes in a beautiful world. You won't want to come back! Don't cheat and forward to the end. Listen to it completely and be stunned

Brian Wilson to me is the ultimate representation of something/someone pure and beautiful being beaten down by bad circumstances and our terrible world. The idea of him being taken from this world, seemingly without having ever fully conquered or overcome all the terrible things that happened to him, is depressing on an existential level to me. The only piece of hope I have that could give me some solace is the hope that Brian at least knows how much good he has done for the world, and that there are those of us who do actually appreciate him and what he put out into the world... Maybe, just maybe, that might somehow make it all worth it for him...

Your description of Brian and his view of other people and the way people like him communicate is so on point. It bugs me so much how very few people actually understand even remotely how a person with that kind of high level of attention of what's happening around you behaves and how that shows in social situations. Brian has a huge built in bs-radar on top of that for being in the business his entire life. Of course aging and problems that come with it affect too, but I trust the family and close friends of Brian in the matter, that he's actually doing quite fine conserning the situation of his life. The filmmakers for this documentary were just lousy interviewers. Brian's been giving 1 word answers to questions since the 60's if he doesn't care for the situation.

I love when the Pennsylvania accent creeps in. Anyway on back on topic but I’m glad you agree with a little bit with me. Let’s not forget he’s used a lot of his own vocals there too. And I’m always saying how emotional I get about Brian’s stuff…and I gotta say…when I heard the end of surfs up it just broke me in half. What Dae did is so intuitive. Just the same way no one has been able to recreate what Brian does after decades…I think Dae is a rare gem in the AI community…no one will be able to recreate what he does. Not just with smile, but with Let’s Put Our Hearts together, Sandy, Don’t forget the sun etc….its art.

I think the 2000s have been great in the Beach Boys world! Brian toured Pet Sounds and Smile, Al made a good solo album, Dennis Pacific Ocean Blue came out on cd, along with Bambu and other previously unreleased material. Brian has made several good solo albums, especially That Lucky Old Sun! A Smile box set came out in 2011! The surviving members reunited in 2012 and mad a decent album to close out their recording career as a band! All the 50th session releases we have gotten so far up to Holland. Honestly, I think this began with the Endless Harmony documentary in 1998, and Brian's solo career. He performed songs live that I never thought I would hear in concert! Disney plus went back to the 80s and 90s mindset. Disney ruined Star Wars, now they screwed over the Beach Boys! I was hopeful that Disney could bring more popularity to post Pet Sounds Beach Boys. That is what pisses me off the most! Maybe a part 2 will come out, and all will be forgiven.

Great video as always Katherine, I agree on your thoughts. I found the documentary dissapointing even if I didnt expect much, honestly. Like, my god, it spent too much time on the Mike is "a genius too", also, it covered like 6 minutes of Charles Manson and ZERO MINUTES on Eugene Landy and his mental health struggles over his life, but whatever, its just a way to catch on new fans, I guess? It looks made by a person who obviously isnt a fan of the Beach Boys, and it delivered something that their real audience of course wouldnt like.

I was just 9 in the autumn of '63 when I got into my older brother's records, found "Be True to Your School" and after listening to it, flipped it over and didn't expect my life to change by listening to the B-side; but that's exactly what happened. The words and the music of "In My Room" affected me like few songs ever have. This man's courage to bare his soul so publicly will, I am certain, continue to be a refuge for generations to come! We love you deeply, Brian...💙

Thank you for watching and sharing your story! "In my room" is one of my mother's favorites as well. I also love the German version (as my mom's side came immigrated from Germany in 1920).

as others have said, a touching story. it certainly isn't my place to seek out stories that show her in a bad light especially now. it'd be nice to meet people like you at my local library.

Really loved your story Katherine. I got to know Melinda and Brian and spent some very memorable times with her up at the sound board often with Van Dyke Parks. I nicer person you could never meet. She was as you describe with everyone. She was Brian's saviour for sure and I can only hope that he holds on as best he can now that she has sadly passed. Savor that memory!! It's very special!!! Bob Love, L.A.
