Also check to see if your "numbers" have a hidden (not really hidden just hard to see) blank space...that will really mess things up...the type( ) will not work, you will get a #value error and the multiply by 1 or add 0 also wont work. I still would expect the format cells thing to work. F Microsuck, that format cells should detect the blank and still convert the text to a number. Idiots.

absolutely should not have to multiply by 1. MS has the format cells THAT DOES NOT WORK AS ADVERTISED.

Why in the F would Microsuck not allow a user to reformat cells from text to numbers while giving the appearance that it does exactly that but then DOESTN! INFURIATING.

Thank you for the excellent explanation. However, it does not fix my problem. Finally, I noticed that the comma "," was the problem maker in my case (it was currency in Indian system lakhs & thousands instead of standard 1000 separator). I replaced the "," with blanks using find and replace which solved my problem. Once again thanks for ISTEXT and TYPE functions.

The paste-multiply was the only solution for my issue and never would have thought of it! :) I was in some weird infinite loop trying to figure out why things weren't matching between two large sets of data. Excel is the best! Thank you for your service in making so many people better as a result!

How do you convert series of numbers into date? For example I have 1231206 and want to convert it to 12/06/23? So there is the 1 extra in front of yymmdd...is there a simple formula to convert that into a date? Thanks

How do you use SUMIf function based on filtered data, for example i am looking for a negative and positive values in same column but it will give me grand total, but i want a total of both negative and positive values based of a certain date. could you help ?
