    It's kinda wild - I picked up a Dell PowerEdge R610 (with 6x 750gb HDDs) for $45 , two Dell PowerEdge R720 (with 8x 900gb HDDs each) for $35 (total), and a Dell PowerVault TL2000 with 24 tapes for $25. I basically got 3x enterprise servers with enterprise backup for $105 total at government auction. You got a good haul too - but if you opt for blade servers you can often find them for far cheaper (granted, noise is going to be an issue, as is likely power draw down the line if you keep them on high loads 24/7). what is DevSecOps? at first glance i would assume it stands for - Developer Security Operations? i feel these acronyms are becoming meaningless nowadays, they seem way to broad it feels like just about everything falls under them. Moreover, i watched your video(watched 60% skimmed 40) and read your description, and i still couldn't find how you would define it(i believe this is an issue). if DevSecOps does indeed have to do with security i'm confused. this video had almost nothing to do with security but you continued to use the word DevSecOps. i clicked on this video in hopes to learn about security operations when operating a server at home, but left with nothing. i like you, your style and, quality of content. You're also unbelievably well spoken, congrats, i genuinely strive to speak as clearly as you do. but the title(and your use of the word) feels unfair and misleading. "DevSecOps homelab" but your primary focus was about *your* homelab and not the security associated with it. i think you branding your self so heavily with the term "DevSecOps" might be a mistake.

    • @rallisf1
      @rallisf1 2 місяці тому

      It is about securing DevOps, meaning containerized applications, deployment pipelines and workflows etc. You usually perform all this stuff on the cloud but a homelab is good for training.

    • @damienjburks
      @damienjburks 2 місяці тому

      Hey! Thank you so much for watching and feedback - greatly appreciated 😄 So, the intent behind this video is to show how I built my home lab for building DevSecOps pipelines using Jenkins. The tooling that I have installed will be leveraged (in which I’ll show in future videos) for securing deploying my apps into my environment as well as in the cloud. The link to the write up shows you how I configured it to help me build. Could it be more secure? Absolutely. This is just the way I have done it. Now, the term DevSecOps is really about securing the deployment of applications into an environment. This video aligns with that methodology from a technical level, because I am showing you and have documented how to install them and build a DevSecOps pipeline, which you can check out that info here: www.devsecblueprint.com/projects/devsecops-home-lab/create-and-configure-pipeline/create-repository-pipeline#step-7-create-jenkinsfile-for-cicd-pipeline

    • @damienjburks

    I want to work in Cloud one day. Should I get the trifecta? Meaning getting A+, Net+, and Security+? I already have A+ but I plan on skipping Net+ and going for SEC+. I also want to get a few AWS certifications. I also plan on doing a few projects in devops and cloud. Is this a good roadmap?

    • @tmreaves1

      Do Cloud+

    • @damienjburks
      @damienjburks 2 місяці тому

      Pick a CSP to start with, and get their certifications. Read the Net+ to understand the networking concepts, and get the Sec+. So, get a few AWS certs, get the Sec+, and read the Net+ to understand networking concepts.

    Great vid, I've heard many other suggest getting the Comptia A+, Network + & Security + for beginners. But it makes more sense to get certs tailored to the desired job rather than just getting a general IT certs. After getting these certs, are there any lab sites you could recommend or how to build projects to show employers.

    • @damienjburks
      @damienjburks 3 місяці тому

      Ah yes. Most people recommend the CompTIA trifecta simply because you learn the fundamentals of IT. I think this is a great strategy if you’re transitioning into tech with no prior background. BUT, it may not be realistic for those who don’t have the time (and money) to invest into it. For starters, I am currently building out a website that folks can reference for building a devsecops pipeline. I have something that you can start with if you have: www.devsecblueprint.com/projects/devsecops-home-lab/ You can also check out the prerequisites section which route you to various other resources with starter projects (especially in the cloud)

    Is it possible to register cloudformation hooks programatically? Like if i wanted to have a hook send info to a lambda i would want to create it all in the one clousformation stack for ci/cd deployment

    Good work Damien! I came across your video after I published my video "SonarQube how to: managment web UI and incremental analysis" - taking a slightly different angle of the same topic (SAST with SonarCube). Difference is 2-fold * in target project platform - WebGoat is Java web application implementing tutorial on OWASP vulnerabilities and incluses sample vulnerable code * demo done in VirtualBox VM (also available at sourceforge) so it could be easily reproducible on the machine not configured for development at the expense of download size (12Gb) user can just start VirtualBox VM (from VM Manager or by double-click on Ubuntu_24.04_SonarCubeinDockerMavenClean.vbox) and will see running session with SonarCube processes up, SonarCube WebUI opened in browser and terminal running docker attached to the SonarCube process = tailing it’s log, opened text file with selected command-line sippet ready to cut&paste to terminal for starting maven analysis. I’m not particularly surprised at just a couple dozen views in a week for my video - I’m not promoting my channel and don’t have significant content in it… but I see you published 13 videos and several short ones in the last few months and just 423 views in 3 months…?!! :( I’ll try to help with promoting a good cause of secure coding with like and subscribe. Good luck! 🤞

    I got mine a year ago and nothing has changed, I am obviously doing something wrong lol. Are the entry level certs for AWS or Azure worth anything? Ironically, I want to move to Dallas in December but having no luck finding anything.

    • @damienjburks
      @damienjburks 3 місяці тому

      With this cert, you gotta put some time in labbing and putting together your portfolio. Combining it with an AWS or Azure cert would set you up for Cloud Security. Learn out loud and build up that portfolio! You’ll get a gig in no time ☺️

      I did not get the A+. I completely skipped it honestly. I wouldn’t recommend getting it. I think it’s a total waste; especially if you’re already in a help desk position. That’s all it really teaches.

    I think the problem I come across is there is so many CompTIA certifications. I thought about get CompTIA+ but also thought about linux and security.. it also kinda sucks they only last 3 years

    • @damienjburks
      @damienjburks 3 місяці тому

      Oh yeah I hear ya. The certs only last for so long. Despite the fact that they have so many, the only two I’ve ever recommended were Security+ and Linux+. Those two are foundational certs, everything else is more specialty (with the exception of Cloud+… which isn’t really worth getting)

    • @damienjburks
      @damienjburks 3 місяці тому

      There are still entry level positions out there, there just far fetched due to the recession that we are in. The biggest problem with the industry is that their expectations of “entry-level” has increased over the past few years…. And it’s problematic for those who want to transition. Entry level employees should have a CISSP 🙃
