Applegate Update: July 23, 2024
Sorry it took a minute to get this edited and up but July and August have been insanely busy. I ended up just fishing the fly rod right off the bank since the fishing was so good. I only spent about 2 hours fishing but it was just what I needed. As I post this (September 4th) the water level is down another 10'-15' but the fishing is still good (I'll post that video asap so it's a bit more relevant).

Diamond Lake Update: June 13, 2024
Переглядів 3822 місяці тому
I've been pretty busy so this is just another "quick and dirty" (poorly edited) video upload. My friend/mentor, Rich, and I went up Diamond Lake and hit some beautiful glassy water in the morning. We spent a chunk of time slowly trolling wooly bugger/nymph combos around the north end of the lake (wrong end of the lake...my bad). Nevertheless, I could see some decent fish from the bow and eventu...
Lost Creek Update...Salmon flies! May 30, 2024

Haven't posted in quite a while. Just a "quick and dirty" editing job to get this out. Hit Lost Creek during the Salmon fly hatch and, as expected, the fish were stupid for anything with a hint of orange or yellow. We did get a number of somewhat unexpected Coho Salmon planters. Beautiful fish and delicious smoked!
Baja Fishing: August 8-13, 2023

Sorry about the long delay in putting out this video. Ongoing, long term family emergency. In any case, this video is relatively short for a reason. The fishing this year (for Baja standards) was just ho-hum. This was supposed to be one of the most epic dorado runs in decades. If you watch other Baja videos from summer/fall/winter of 2023 you will see numerous examples of how crazy good the dor...
Applegate Update Nov 3, 2023

I got one more trip before the rain rolled in. If you are in SW Oregon November is typically the last month of hot "Fall" lake fishing before the rain and cold become too much. Access and launching are complicated by the low water draw-downs in the reservoirs but if you can get on the water you should catch fish. You don't have to get there at first light. The bite usually starts sometime after...
Lost Creek October 2023

Well I haven't fished/posted in a while due to an (ongoing) family emergency. I squeezed this pontoon boat trip in to scout for a regular boat trip the following week. Both were fun but I only videoed this trip. Note: Lost Creek just upstream from the bridge (just prior to Red Rocks) is pretty hot right now. We got 23 last week even though it was raining off and on all day. Tight lines, friends!
Applegate Update May 2023

First trip to Applegate for 2023. The lake is filled up all the way to the tree line. Awesome! Tons of small planters with a smattering of larger fish. A few nice sized smallmouth bass motoring about as well. The trout were not super aggressive. Sort of a tentative, cold water, spring bite. Power nymph/worm combo worked but not as good as half a nightcrawler slowly sinking with just the weight ...

Arguably our best Baja trip ever. While we didn't catch our biggest fish ever or even catch the most fish ever, this was still, arguably, our best Baja fishing trip to date. Just consistent, rock solid, high quality fishing every day. It took me FOREVER to wade through all the footage and edit it down to under 50 minutes. If that's too long for you to tolerate here's some of the highlights: 5:0...
Crazy Catch and Release Bonanza at Applegate

I took my pastor, Jim Burnham (Calvary Crossroads Church-Grants Pass), up to Applegate Lake for a day of relaxation and catching. Although the water was very low we arrived in the middle of a hatch with trout sipping flies off the glassy surface for the first 200-300 yards of the lake. Utterly EPIC!
Late September Lost Creek
Переглядів 41Рік тому
My buddy Lee and his son, Dallas, joined me last week for some fun trout fishing at the top of Lost Creek. As usual we were fishing the cold/warm water transition. In the clear water just above the transition we were sight fishing schools of trout up to 16". I could kick myself for not bringing a fly rod! The pink Power Nymph with a 2" piece of nightcrawler was the ticket. Powerbait, whole infl...

Just a quick local update on Lost Creek Lake. The level has dropped below the fork at the upper end but it is still decently high. The vast majority of the fish were caught on the pink Power Nymph with a 1/32nd oz. jig head and an inch of nightcrawler.
Quick Applegate Update
Переглядів 422 роки тому
Just a quick video to update local viewers on Applegate Lake. You will have to work a bit harder than normal but the fish are there. We saw lots of healthy sized smallmouth bass around both bridges and the timber at the top of the lake. They were not nearly as aggressive as usual. The Carberry Creek Arm was stunningly quiet. Not a single fish from that side. Wind drifting the jig/nightcrawler c...

First time to Applegate this year. Water is high and clear (good underwater footage). Lots of planted fish in both creek arms. Awesome sight fishing from the pontoon boat for trout and even caught a really nice one fly fishing (14:20)! There are some quality smallmouth up there as well.

    If you had 2 lures to use for bass at that lake, what would they be?

    • @petejenista3108
      @petejenista3108 3 місяці тому

      My suggestions would be a pink Berkley Power Nymph on a 1/32 jighead. Second, would be a 2" motor oil curl tail on a 1/16 jighead. Note: I focus on numbers, not size, so I go through a bunch of little fish mixed in with occasional larger fish. I'm also no purist. I tip the aforementioned jigs with an inch or two of nightcrawler and a bit of Pro Cure Super Gel Crawfish scent. Hope that helps!

      Sorry Carl. My videos are mainly (but not exclusively) produced for the benefit of family, friends, and fishermen/women here in southwest Oregon who are already familiar with the area. I suppose a mention of the state now and then would be helpful. Thanks for the suggestion.

    • @petejenista3108

      3/4 oz keel weight. Appx. 10-15 feet deep. The bite is currently moving toward casting and jigging the crappie jig/worm combo. Should be hot up by the river headwaters and immediately downstream. Good luck!

    • @petejenista3108
      @petejenista3108 2 роки тому

      Lake should be 100% full. If you are willing to go all the way to the headwaters I would give either river arm a try in the swift water (spinners, jig/worm combo, fly fishing...if that's your thing). Then move to the "Y" where the two rivers meet. Jig/worm combo or Powerbait (not my thing but very effective) are good there. Another spot is right where the cold river water goes below the warmer lake water (usually marked by floating debris and possibly a color change). You can work your way back toward the Hwy 62 bridge casting jig/worm combos at structure or slow trolling a flasher/fly/worm combo. In the main body of the lake cast the jig/worm combos around any rocky structure or where little streams feed the lake. Lots of smallmouth (emphasis on the "small") and an occasional bonus trout. Slow trolling the flasher/fly/worm combo in the general area of the dam tower is a good bet, too. Hope you do well! I'm going next Tuesday.

    Hi Pete, Kathy and I just watched your video awesome! Those are some incredible trout. What kind of reel line and pole were you using?

    • @petejenista3108
      @petejenista3108 2 роки тому

      So, the rod and reel combo for the flasher and fly combination is a 7' slow action rod with a 2000 series reel filled with Berkeley Vanish 6# fluorocarbon. The smaller combo with the curly-tail jig is a 5' fast action rod with a 1000 series reel filled with 6# Berkeley Nanofil (dark green) topped with a 3' shock leader of 6# fluorocarbon. Hope that helps!

      Hey Pete. Nice set up. Those trout looked very plump. I think you should mount them! I'll be fly fishing in VA the middle of the month for two days. Stream fishing at a place called Escatabwa farms. Don't have trout the size they have in Oregon, but hope to land a few.

    Catch any crappie at this lake?

    • @petejenista3108
      @petejenista3108 3 роки тому

      Nope. Galesville Reservior and Willow Lake are your best southwestern Oregon crappie options. If you are willing to take a looooong drive and stay for a few days, Lake Owyhee out in the boonies of southeastern Oregon is FIRE for crappie. Friends who went there caught 1500 (not a typo) during a trip to this lake.

    Nice thought of you to throw the fish back you didn’t need but it’s likely they didn’t survive after the stress and being handled around the boat.

    • @petejenista3108
      @petejenista3108 3 роки тому

      So, I don't know if you noticed but all the fish were kept alive (and VERY active) in my aerated live well. If any of the fish had appeared weak or "stressed" I would have kept them and eaten them. I suppose, in hindsight, it would have been kinda' cool to show them being released but, alas, that will have to wait for another video. BTW, here's a link to a scientific study of the effect of catch and release fishing on the growth and survival of rainbow trout: digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1071&context=ncfwrustaff#:~:text=Survival%20rates%20of%20hooked%20and,trout%20hooked%20in%20the%20mouth.
