I'm Michelle Visser, Simple Living Mentor, creator of the Simple Doesn't Mean Easy podcast, & author of Sweet Maple. I'm on a mission to help folks simplify life.
When we moved from the heart of suburbia to a 200-year-old farmhouse in a rural corner of New England, I realized that living a little more simply can be done in small steps, no matter where you live or what your story is.
After a ton of mistakes -- with kombucha making, maple syrup making, real food cooking, and homesteading -- I realized that most of the things I was learning to do--from baking with wild yeast, to making my own floral-infused syrups and sugars---any one can do, with the right encouragement.
While Simple Doesn't Mean Easy, it's always worth the effort.
SUBSCRIBE RIGHT NOW, join the #SoulyRestedTribe & let's do some simplifying. Together.

Just discovered your podcast / website / YT channel today, 6/4/24! I appreciate your down-to-earth, gentle approach, and pointing everything back to the Lord 💛 Kombucha sounds like a tasty, and maybe simple, way to improve our gut health daily. Looking forward to trying out some recipes! Thanks so much, Michelle, for the encouragement 😊 Grace & Peace, Nancy

@@MichelleVisser Hey Michelle, That's how I found out about you!! We bought a homestead a few months ago, so I've listened to a few of your podcasts on homesteading along with the kombucha ones today! I need to start journaling to keep a record. Such a wise suggestion 👍 Grateful the Lord crossed our paths! Thank you 🌻

I have never had this. I drink my ice tea afraid of fermentation. I look at fermentation an think mold scares the heck out of me.
This is a great conversation . Little bit of interruption .,but hey this is worth it .
so glad you enjoyed it
I have the same hand pasta machine as Ruthanne, and I got it from the Thrift store also. And yes the handle does come out easy. You just wipe it of and air dry.
good to know
Thankyou , very good educational and informative . Trying to use good fats .
oh good! i'm glad it was helpful and encouraging
Great conversation; thanks, ladies, for sharing your knowledge. I find that the grass fed beef has the yellow tallow. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
so glad you joined us :)
I've never tasted it before. I've never even heard of it until Lisa from Boones farm was making it. Her sister too from our oily house. So I got curious about what it was. 😊❤
Oh I hope you can taste it soon! But fair warning: purchased is NEVER as good as homemade
I love Peach ! I really want to make my own, but I am nervous to start!
I love Ginger Peach! But straight up peach is good too :) And I totally "get" you but seriously if you just know the right tips & tricks it's SO good and the most fun I have in my kitchen. :)
The orange hibiscus is wonderful. I purchased your starter kit pulse 3 different flavorings and love it. My 2nd fermentation finished today and it turned out great. Thank you
YAY!! This makes me so happy! (and that IS a good one! Second only to Cherry Almond, in my opinion :) )
I made sweet sun tea several weeks ago & I wanted to see if I could get a Scoby started so I've let it sit & guess what I now have? I A big beautiful Scoby❣️❣️❣️ It grew all on its own without a starter❣️❣️❣️
You just made sweet tea, let it rest and a Scoby formed by itself?
@@ymrelang yep It's been about 4 weeks now.
it's fun to see that happen, BUT I wouldn't try to use it to make kombucha. I'd only do that with an actual culture. Your tea captured natural yeast in the air but mold will probably take over before the yeast can make the liquid acidic enough for the mold not to be able to grow. I'm thinking it would be very hard for you to get a naturally occurring kombucha like this.
@@MichelleVisser Why would it be hard to do? How is a culture made? Wouldn't mold already have occurred? This was an experiment at the 2 nd week I almost tossed it. I decided to have a closer look & a taste. I'm glad I didn't toss it.
@@MCPeciliar while living in Florida I did it too; but, I used an organic kombucha drink I bought from the store to develop a Scoby. It worked and I made many gallons of kombucha through years. Then, I moved to Michigan and tried to do the same. Here is very cold! It’s harder to ferment. However, I do ferment vegetables, water and drinks. The acidity doesn’t allow harmful bacteria to thrive. KHAM bacteria or mold isn’t harmful (not pretty) and could be removed. I will try you method. Thanks for sharing.
If I'm using Farmhouse Teas flavor packs I love the rosemary citrus. If I'm using fresh, I really like lemon strawberry.
My favorite farmhouse teas flavor is the one that tastes a little like Dr. Pepper & mmmm I have to try lemon strawberry!
Great review! The company needs to tell people how to pronounce their product's name :)
so glad you found it helpful (and yes!)
What about a shagbark hickory?
i haven't met or ever chatted with someone who has done that. Have you?
@@MichelleVisser I have too many shagbarks on the property not to try. I know you can boil down the bark and that whole process but specifically tapping a shagbark I have no idea. Educating myself now for next year.
@@rhoadesfarms3900 i love it!! please keep me posted!!
Which berries you use
the video description explains... For a fresh milled baking flour that acts more like the store-bought flour, use: - ½ hard white wheat berries & - ½ soft white wheat berries

So easy! I've never tried carob, but will now. I wasn't aware of its benefits. Thank you!
I learned so many fascinating things when I interviewed both Azure experts. This one is about the carob: ua-cam.com/video/LJSbnn-aUAU/v-deo.html If you try carob (especially this mint carob!) I'd love to know what you think!
Yay! I finally got to making a small batch! Was waiting for the humidity to ease up &.for.my.freeze.dried.friuts to come. My oven requires me to toast for less than 13 min, so use caution there This is going to be such a blessing.to our family, thank you so much Michelle! Can't wait for my Mom & Sister to try too!
oh yay!!! So glad you're enjoying it. It's a game changer, for sure!!
Looks so great I want to try it! Thank you for sharing!
It's one of my go-tos, for sure. Hope you can make some to try!
All right...I'm convinced. I have heard so much about Azure Standard, but have just put off using them. It will be a bit of a drive, so I will check around to see if any others in the area use them and we could take turns or go together to pick up orders. The carob chips are the deal clincher. So looking forward to the Pantry Staples Summer Challenge...been needing a boost to restock and make from scratch pantry items. Thanks...and blessings, Marie
Yes, the mint carob chips are one of my favorite things I order from Azure... it was fascinating chatting with their CXO about them! You might really like that... ua-cam.com/video/LJSbnn-aUAU/v-deo.htmlsi=3qjDUC3abjg-IuFU
This is exactly what we do in our area. We have 8 folks that take turn heading to our pick up and bring it back to us about an hour away. I hope you love Azure as much as we do!
@@dirttodreams i love that!! (And Azure is the BEST!)
What about seed oils makes them bad? Is it the process they go through to ve on store shelves or the oil itself?
Thank you so so much for this!… but what are the measurements? I can’t seem to find them. This looks like perfect snack!
whoops!! I use 1:1:1 raisins, carob chips, pumpkin seeds
Also, I just added a printable recipe for this trail mix as a link in the video description :)
@@MichelleVisser thank you :)
If walnut family trees have natural pectin, could you make fruit preserves with it if you don't mind the flavor? Or is it not like the pectin from apple and citrus that thickens preserves? We have black walnut and pecan trees.

Just a decaf black. But I love a tea I can't get any more. It was 2 teas together. Cherry flavored and a vanilla flavored mixed together.
LOL, I may live in the south, but I hate sweet tea. The flavored tea I think was black tea, but I'm hot sure. The place closed down, and I'm not sure how to find those flavored tea in decaf, as I no longer can have caffeine after 12pm. 😔
