    Yes, I used clear nail polish to bring the colour back to some shells and stones many years ago and I couldn't believe what a difference it made to the look of them. Nice to know we can access dedicated products for that purpose now ☺

    Do you just tie a knot with the leather cord?

    • @creatingatclassiccottage
      @creatingatclassiccottage 3 місяці тому

      You can tie a knot in the leather if you like long necklaces; or you can add a clasp by adding a leather cord end with glue or use a fold over connector with a ring. Then attach jump rings and the clasp.

    Why did he not clamp a length of timber to the table top to ensure a straight cut with a guide edge?

    • @creatingatclassiccottage
      @creatingatclassiccottage 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching. Because it was safer to saw this large, heavy piece on the concrete, and because there was nowhere to place a clamp securely, he opted to cut it as shown in the video.

      Thank you! Any brand of chalky finish paint would probably work for this technique. If painting on metal or glass, look for a bonding primer made for this application; then apply the primer prior to painting. Acrylic craft paint may also work, but you would definitely need the bonding primer if using acrylic paint.

      @@creatingatclassiccottage thanx for reply dear☺️, kindly tell me, can i use gesso for base and regular acrylic paints

    • @creatingatclassiccottage
      @creatingatclassiccottage 6 місяців тому

      I haven’t tried painting metal with acrylic paints. I think it would work.If you use gesso for the base, I recommend lightly sanding the piece with 220 grit sandpaper then thoroughly cleaning and rinsing prior to painting. Also, if you use gesso I would recommend 2 coats.

    Great tips. Here is another tip that others might find useful regarding working with gatorhide: practice / test on a scrap piece. Preferably multiple times before moving to your final piece. Gatorhide has zero forgiveness and can very, very easily ruin a finish if you don't know exactly what you're doing with it. We love Dixie belle but have found Fusion Tough Coat to be a superior product in terms of ease of application and workability.

I had one giving to me 4 chairs with that and I wanted to make some smaller stans and kr tables island that fit into my little kitchen that can be used for shelved or table. I didn't want to cut it up if it was worth something or rare. There is some kind of writing stamped in black underneath kind kf big but I can't read it.

      Hi! I'm not sure about the age of this table, my guess would be 1930s to 1960s. This table was not in great shape when I got it. The top had deep scratches on one side and it was really wobbly, so cutting it up and repurposing was an easy decision. My personal rule of thumb for repurposing furniture is if it is a family heirloom or if it has been appraised at a really high price by a professional, then I don't paint/repurpose. I do paint/repurpose if it's going to sit in my basement or in a corner unused as it is. I would rather enjoy a piece than have it sit. Hope this helps!

    If the gatorhide yellows what can you do to fix it

    • @creatingatclassiccottage
      @creatingatclassiccottage 2 роки тому

      In my experience, I have only had Gator Hide yellow on light colored paint when the tannins (oils) from the wood comes to the surface or when the piece wasn’t cleaned well. To prevent the tannins from bleeding through, use a stain blocking primer (I like Dixie Belle BOSS) after cleaning thoroughly (I use Dixie Belle White Lightning cleaner). Tip - always rinse with clear water after cleaning. If your Gator Hide has yellowed, scuff sand, apply a stain blocking primer, then repaint and seal again with Gator Hide.

      @@creatingatclassiccottageThank you. I did clean very well I also did 3coats of dixie bell paint let dry overnight before applying the gatorhide. This was to be a Christmas gift but I'm not sure I can get it finished in time starting over. The only thing I didn't do was prime so I'll try that. Thanks again

    • @creatingatclassiccottage
      @creatingatclassiccottage 2 роки тому

      You’re welcome. The primer should make a difference. If you use Dixie Belle BOSS to prime, be sure to follow the dry time instructions on the jar as it needs to dry overnight for best results. Also, keep in mind that full cure time is 30 days after applying the last product. Gentle use is fine before the 30 days, but heavy use is best after it’s fully cured. I hope this helps. Have a wonderful Christmas!
