44871 accelerates The Stratford Flyer past Chettisham | 07/09/2024
As is the norm these days, LMS Black Five 44871 was the rostered loco for the steam hauled section of the latest Railway Touring Company trip, The Stratford Flyer from Norwich to Stratford-Upon-Avon.
The weather forecast for cloud and mist was, unfortunately, correct and, predictably, the Sun appeared not even 2 minutes after the train had passed. Here, the loco is seen accelerating the train away from the pathing stop at Ely West Junction and past Chettisham, making a lovely, crisp beat.

During a holiday in North Wales, I made my first visit to the Llangollen Railway on a beautifully sunny day. The line is on an uphill gradient from Llangollen to Corwen with the departure from Berwyn requiring a standing start on the gradient as well as on a curve. I used to stand at Kings Cross 61/2 Immingham had some Brits that they used on the Immingham trains ,they were a bit run down but once they got under way their barking exhaust reverberated when in Gasworks tunnel ,memorable ,also seeing them through New Southgate on the down and up Grimsby and Immingham trains .Happy days,

Up until late 1964, I used to travel to my Grandmothers from Baguley to Cadishead on the CLC line from Stockport to Liverpool. A particular delight was the Partington to Cadishead and reverse section, whereby the usually Stanier 2-6-4 tank loco pulled the 5 suburban coaches from a standing start up over the Manchester Ship Canal viaduct. Window lowered a tad via the leather strap, it was a sound etched in my memory, suitably jogged by this wonderful posting. Thank you.
