Chąąsht’ezhii - Wild Carrot/Celery
Chąąsht’ezhii grows abundantly on the Navajo Nation, or it used to, anyway. It looks like a carrot but tastes like celery. Its harvest time is in early spring. When the leaves just begin to grow, it is tastiest and sweetest. The bigger the leaves get, the wild carrot tastes bitter. Either way, it is a common childhood snack for many of us. Here's a modern touch of it. Enjoy.

I saw a sale on beets today and thought I'd make dinner with it. I love beets. When I was a younger, at Many Farms Elementary School, my friends would not eat their beets for lunch. They always scooped their servings onto my lunch tray. Sweet memories.

Neeshjízhii is steam corn stew and a comfort food for us with lamb, mutton or goat. In this recipe I added pinto beans, one of my mom’s favorites. The second recipe is blue corn fry bread. Happy New Year. 😊

Naayízíłchí’í náádahasdlíí’. I love pumpkin season just as much as white corn season! We never used canned pumpkin when I was little; I didn’t even know they existed until I was older (we didn’t have everything at Many Farms Trading Post, you know 😊). We always used pumpkin from the cornfield to prepare lots of goodies. The best memory, however, was sitting at the table with Grandma and my sist...

Bááh łikaní bii’ aztłé’ígíí ayóo nihił daalkan. 🥧 Here’s a two-in-one narrative about how I learned how to make apple pie from my beautiful aunt who lives in Wichita, Kansas. Many years ago, after my sophomore year in high school, I visited my aunt, uncle, and family. They had a giant apple tree in the front yard, and Aunty and I spent the summer baking apple pies in the 100-degree humidity, an...

Our people refer to this plant as ch’il ahwéhé or dééh. It is common across our homeland and is seasonal during summer. It is enjoyed hot or cold, as shown here. My late nálii, paternal grandmother, always made it for us grandchildren when we stayed with her during the summer time. At night, she boiled some tea for us and lit the kerosene lamp as we gathered around her table for jigsaw puz...

I wish the Navajo Nation would mass produce these indigenous ingredients, it would be easier to create these recipes. Thus creating farming jobs, and preserving these recipes with the modern times. I love chiłchin, but I can't find it anywhere.
