Spudooli Road Trips
New Zealand
Приєднався 3 лип 2009
I'm on a mission to drive every single significant and less significant road in Aotearoa New Zealand. I've done most of them already, but now I have a GoPro sucked onto the top of the windscreen of our car so you can join me for the roads that are left and the roads I'll do again just because they are way too fun to do only once.
Yes, there are roads in Europe that arguably may be better, Stelvio Pass for example, but imagine Stelvio Pass on gravel with native Aotearoa bush right beside the road, with the left front wheel skipping over the water table and you knowing the beach is only 30 minutes down the road. NZ is the place!
The journey is way more important than the destination. And remember, happiness is not around the corner, happiness is the corner - especially if it's gravel.

Driving Pirongia to Almost New Plymouth via Marokopa, Aotearoa New Zealand
We headed to New Plymouth to look around for a weekend and you can some along for part of the trip south via a detour to Marokopa. We'd never been out there and it's also about 100km of winding road.
There is sheep at #1:18:30 and you can check out what they are up to at Mt Messenger at #2:50:00
If you have a TV sitting in your living room doing nothing most of the time, play this video, or any other Slow TV from UA-cam, as moving art. See some of Aotearoa New Zealand even if you can't travel here right now.

Driving Christchurch to Geraldine, Aotearoa New Zealand
Переглядів 502Рік тому
A drive from Christchurch to Geraldine over typically straight Canterbury roads but via the scenic inland route for some variety. The GoPro battery runs out part way, of course, you only miss about 10 minutes, but there is some snowy mountains anyway. This trip is in a rental rather than our car so if it's not the usual shiny black, then that is the explanation. If you have a TV sitting in your...
Driving Te Araroa to Tolaga Bay, Aotearoa New Zealand

Check out the worlds largest and oldest pohutakawa tree on the right in the first 20 seconds of this video. On what turned out to be the only other fine day of our road trip around the East Cape we travel from Te Araroa down to Tolaga Bay. If you have a TV sitting in your living room doing nothing most of the time, play this video, or any other Slow TV from UA-cam, as moving art. See some of th...
Driving Tirau to Ōpōtiki, Aotearoa New Zealand with Wandering Pig
Переглядів 398Рік тому
It's been a while but we got away on another road trip, this time Tirau to Ōpōtiki as we headed towards the East Cape to Gisborne via the long way. This trip starts with fog and then clears up as we head to Rotorua. A quick fuel stop then on to Hell's Gate and stop at some of Rotorua's lakes. A detour through Kawarau and then the usual bug strike and unusually a pig wandering across the road. I...
Driving Ōtaki to Upper Hutt, Aotearoa New Zealand

Possibly not the most interesting road in Aotearoa to drive but seeing how it looks before all the express ways go in might be interesting in 20 years I guess. If you have a TV sitting in your living room doing nothing most of the time, play this video, or any other Slow TV from UA-cam, as moving art. See some of Aotearoa New Zealand even if you can't travel here right now.
Driving Whanganui to Taumarunui, SH4, Aotearoa New Zealand

We haven't been up State Highway 4 in years so decided to go have a look. So little traffic on the road for the middle of summer. Got to love road trips in NZ. Check the smoke off the brakes of the truck at #38:35 And at #40:25 I let the ute go by only because we were being leisurely. Any other time, he wouldn't be anywhere near me :-) A really great bug strike at #1:20:06 - Don't miss that! If...
Driving the Desert Road, SH1, Aotearoa New Zealand

It was a beautiful day on the Turangi side, but predictably cloudy over the other side. And sadly we got caught behind a car transporter and road works in the best twisty bit that's good for having a bit of fun on. But anyway, come for a ride over the highest part of State Highway 1 in Aotearoa New Zealand If you have a TV sitting in your living room doing nothing most of the time, play this vi...
Driving Auckland to Pakiri and back, Aotearoa New Zealand

In this video, we park in front of 4 rubbish bins (trash cans), see chickens, beep the horn twice, drive over 15km of gravel road, a paddle in the ocean. have a bit of a fang over some windy road and stop for a burger We head up SH16 to Wellsford, then over to Pakiri and then on to Leigh with a quick stop at Mathesons Bay for a look. On the way home we stop in Morris and James Pottery to look a...

We head to Port Waikato to Sunset Beach to walk to the mouth of the Waikato River. On the way back we stop at Les Batkin reserve for lunch and then on to Pokeno to buy bacon and sausages. We spare you the drive back on the motorway. You've seen it before. If you have a TV sitting in your living room doing nothing most of the time, play this video, or any other Slow TV from UA-cam, as moving art...

Heading home to Auckland from a weekend away in Taupo, up State Highway 1, with a stop for sausages at Pokeno Bacon. There is a good bug squash too. If you have a TV sitting in your living room doing nothing most of the time, play this video, or any other Slow TV from UA-cam, as moving art. See some of Aotearoa New Zealand even if you can't travel here right now.
Driving Taupo to the Chateau Tongariro Hotel, Aotearoa New Zealand
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
We drive from Acacia Bay in Taupo to the Chateau Tongariro Hotel via State Highway 1, 46, 47 and 48. You miss out on about 5 or 7km due to rain when the camera had to come off the car so that we could use some windscreen wipers. I don't know what to do about the bugs being splattered on the lens. It's so small yet the bugs like to end their short lives squashed like a bug. I think it's only for...

Driving Opononi to Auckland, Aotearoa, New Zealand - Part 1

Driving Opononi to Whangarei, in this episode, over SH12 to Kaikohe and then down SH15 to Maungatapere and then on to Whangarei where we turn right into SH1 to head back to Auckland. Perhaps should have avoided SH15 for the sake of the passenger - it was gloriously windy. But then we would have missed the cool bridge connecting to a bride thing at Twin Bridges. See it at #59:10 If you have a TV...
Driving Auckland to Omapere on the Hokianga Harbour - Aotearoa New Zealand
Переглядів 3,3 тис.3 роки тому
A 2 day trip to Northland, from Auckland to Omapere over SH12 through Dargaville with a quick stop to visit Tane Mahuta along the way. We had to take the Gopro off the car a couple of times due to rain so you miss some of the trip. But the best bit through Waipoua Forest is all in the video. If you have a TV sitting in your living room doing nothing most of the time, play this video, or any oth...

Driving North Shore City to Auckland and back - Driving Aotearoa New Zealand - Slow TV
hi hope you had a great Xmas and have a wonderful and safe new year, it is great to see your videos again, this was a super drive, loved watching these long drives in real time and speed, you get to see the countryside slowly change, even the sheep had a cameo appearance , looking forward to more drives, thanks again, Happy Aussie.
1hours 45 mins video .. the size is over 100G ?
Nah, I think the processed video size before uploading it to UA-cam was about 30GB. It's only 1440p
Was there a section missing from this route? Kaiwaka to Ruawai?
Yeah, it briefly rained and we had to take the camera off the car to use the wipers :-)
A bit too early to use the Hamilton bypass. Have you driven on that since it opened?
Yes, we have. It's very good. Has drastically reduced the travel time in that part of the country

Hi thanks for sharing, loved the way you play it in real time so I can see the complete trip, have you driven the S.H.2 from Gisborne through Opotiki to Te teko then HW.30/34 on to Rotorua, hopefully one day I can get back there and finish driving that amazing country, keep safe, Happy Aussie.
Yes, we drove Gisborne to Opotiki through the Waioeka Gorge and on to Rotorua on this trip. Unfortunately it was raining the whole way back so couldn't video that drive. Which is a bit of a bugger as that particular road was the whole reason for our road trip. Thanks for watching.
@@spudooli Hi again thanks for getting back, it was a bit disappointing to read the road couldn't be videoed, not only for your keepsake but this part of the trip is the final piece of the puzzle (apart of the road from leaving the freeway near Christchurch through Oxford to Springfield) which is the way we went up through Arthur's Pass. We found the drive from Gisborne amazing, and it is thanks to all you people that take the time to put a lot of effort and skills to upload the videos of your drives that has made it possible for me to put together and redrive almost the whole 3,500ks that we did over both islands and it has been amazing to sit back bump it over to the big screen and pretend we are sitting in the passenger seat of the car and enjoy memories, thank you so much again for sharing and the other drives you have done is on the bucket list. Happy Aussie.
@@juttachaffey5717 I'm well pleased you enjoyed the trip. I can't wait to do the Forgotten World highway again real soon and then the road from Rotorua to Hawkes Bay over Te Urewera. Then we head to the South Island to do the Catlins.
Waipoua forest gotta be my favourite part
I agree. It's a lovely part of the country.
What car you driving?
It's a BMW M235i
@@spudooli cool bro, do you mind linking me the products you used to mount the camera, aswell as the camera you used?
@@raqaoce9796 I have a Go Pro 8 and I'm using the Go Pro suction cup mount sucked onto the top of the windscreen. I've also got a foam surround on the go pro to try and reduce some windnoise with some success up to about 50km/h.
44:15 BLOODY TYPICAL!
no way i used to live on this street😭
It's a small world!
i want to ask you wich camera are you using?
It's a Go Pro Hero 8 mounted on a Go Pro suction cup
@@spudooli im actually impressed that you could record 3 and a half hours with a gopro! :)
@@Tebogajardo It's not 4k so as I recall was about 80GB. Next road trip will be all 4k and yeah, I don't think 3 and a half hours will viable then.
just one word, worderfull :)
OMG,You Definitely Know It When You've Reached Auckland lol...
Ha, yes. Suddenly there is people everywhere
good morning-Super- so nice hsots~catch you later~ Spudooli, =))
Do you reckon you could do a drive from Auckland to mount maunganui
The drive between Auckland and Tauranga isn't a great one really. Too much traffic these days. Although the Karangahake is pretty good. So don't have any plans to head back that way anytime soon. But if I do, I will strap the camera to the car and let you know.
Must be bloody cold up in the hills of Taupo
It was ok in November when we were there. But yeah, probably is most of the time
Enjoyable video. You did an excellent job making it. Auckland looks like a rather large Metro.
Thanks. Yep. There is 1.6 million of us.
1.8 million to be precise
Could you do a road trip from Auckland to gisborne
Yes. As soon aswe can, we have a trip planned for Gisborne via Te Uruwera, around the East Cape and back.
Dankie vir die wonderlike video
From Taupo living in Aussie. SH1 looking good between Hamilton and Auks, thanks for the lift 🤙
Thanks for coming along for the ride
What's the duration?
3 hours 34 minutes and 26 seconds
Auckland is like Seattle in an alternate universe.
The nearest I ever got to Seattle is Kent which is south of Seattle, and not much like Auckland :-)
Nice video 👍👍
accually really cool
Thanks. I think so too
Chur, bruvva!
What car are you driving?
It's a 2014 BMW M235i
Thanks for the ride 👍
Thanks for coming along!
If you see the mountains, it's about to rain. If you can't see the mountains, it's already raining...
Ha. Yes. So true
Thanks a million. This is exactly what I needed.
Nice climate
