Tremendous. I enjoyed your practical approach. Especially in regard to debunking some myths (such as the need for an analog oscilloscope). Hats off to you for developing an understanding and sharing it so clearly. Liked and subscribed!
Many thanks and welcome 🙏🙂
I have this CD player, I love the tubes' sound... Nice review!
great job man.practice soldering some more in ur free time
?? Soldering looked super clean to me. Which part looks bad?
@@fredsk1his solder joints are cold & oxidized in general ,which will cause cracking in time. soldering heavier joints like that requires more heat ,bigger iron & a bit more experience . But he did an alright job for a hobbiest. ( I'm an ee & been soldering for 25 years )
@@fredsk1 I do not know what he's on about, honestly. Neither cold, nor oxidized and with a good shine to it.
@@thevoidedwarranty I don't agree with your assessment and honestly looking at your videos makes me question your stated experience. In one of your videos, you recommend using a hot air station at full tilt to literally blast molten solder around everywhere to remove components. Come on man...
Xraytonyb worked on one of these and gave up on it. Maybe he needs to send it to you.
I think I just got lucky with a moderately working example 🤣
Amazing work! Congrats! I know this takes a lot of time for you already, but seeing measurements, and having some explanations why parts or bad or such info would help us learn more :)
Ill go over the capacitors and how they test in the next video for you, the resistors were just preventative (while Im in there) and were fine. I was just taking measurements to double check values before changing :)
@@whatcouldgowrong7914 Thank you, this is very kind of you! :)
what a nightmare ,you repairers have some balls
Long Vid the better 👍👍
He pulls the door cover off but doesn't explain how it's done. If been fighting with mine and cant remove it. Afraid it will break.
Unscrew the CD tray assembly from the chassis so you can move it around a little, then you can tilt it forwards and the door is clipped in at the bottom. The front door cover has to come off before you can remove the entire assembly.
@@whatcouldgowrong7914 thanks...I figured it out. It is snapped in at each side. You have to push the middle while carefully pulling one side, and it pops off.
Nice flashlight
Beast of the thing 🙏
Anyone got the file for the 3D print of the gear? I would be glad to get that.
Let me see if I can dig it up for you :)
@@whatcouldgowrong7914 Thanks.
Anyone who got the file for the 3D print of the gear? I realy need that.
Really helpful, thanks.
Hi, for the bias adjustment did the 2 legs of the red goes to one meter and the 2 legs of the blue goes to the other meter OR one blue and red goes to one meter and the other red+BLUE to the other meter? If so what is the polarity? Thank you
Cannot remember the polarity but it is marked in the service manual. Red is hot side and blue is cold side for doing DC offset adjustments. It doesnt matter much it was just so I remembered what I was adjusting
Ok. Thank you for your reply. I will try to figure out how it goes
Hi, how did you clean the pins on the power supply? What tool did you use?
I used deoxit and the fibreglass brush :)
@@whatcouldgowrong7914thank you
I really enjoyed to see your videos. I have 2 questions 1. I don't understand is the blue and red bias wiring for the meters. Can you please explain how those wire are going to the meters. 2. the DC offset between hot and cold on both channels on my amp is 0V but on both channels there's 1.4V between hot/cold to the ground. What is the problem? It's too high. I will really appreciate your help. It will be very helpful. Thanks.
In the Sansui Alphas, the hot and cold sides are both active in their own way so they need to be balanced together for DC offset then the offset can be adjusted relative to ground. There are seperate adjustments for each. Red is hot side Blue is cold side :)
Thank you for your answer. Do you have please wiring diagram of red and blue that are connected to the the meters? Thanks.
rebuild, Rebuild, REBUILD 🎉
Dude. Loved the video!
Thanks! 🙏
restore pls
half way through the close up shots of the burnt out channel I swear I saw luke skywalker flying his x-wing around the scorched laser cannon 😂 it looks like the Death Star in there Gold Leader…

A bother needs a thermal camera! :P
I need a lot of things 🤣
I made a similair mistake getting a Yamaha TC800-GL
Part it out or sell as is.
X ray tony b did one of those on his channel. What a piece of poo.
Sweet channel mate! You should definitely try and restore this. Very special piece of audio gear in my opinion, looks pretty cool as well.
who would not want to see its restoration? It is unique, and the more crazy work it needs, the better for the viewers :) I think you need to learn about youtube and your viewers, haha :)
Hi, This one wants to live again a happy life.... As you see how beaten up it is now, it still works... 🤩 And it screams: help me, please Therefore it deserves some true and complete care. So : do it.... Back in the late 90s I was given a heavily used and beaten up crest audio 8001... Half of its power Ts had been somewhere else.... But first test on a variac was still promising. So I accepted the challenge, and months of cleaning full dis/reassembling/rebuilding later it performed like new. And since then I have a pretty powerful workhorse which can do 1.8kW bridged into a two ohm load continuous, if needed. Cheers.
Wow, I love Yamaha audio gear but this is a new one on me! Please continue with the restoration, this is so unique.
Obviously restore this rare piece of Audio History.
i remember these from my days at the Yamaha repair center in the 80s - 90s , good luck ! ;-)
I bet everyone avoided those jobs 🤣
@@whatcouldgowrong7914 there was a single victim assigned to these ;-) the rest learned te hard way , mostly by trying to use current limiting lightbulbs "to prevent damage while turniing them on the first time"
@@cassettedeck-walkman-repair Good to know what I researched was accurate about not using current limiting
Cool intro and yes, full restoration please...good luck!
It's a cool amplifier to have in repaired/working state, but I'm not sure I'd rebuild it completely if it was mine. I have an Adcom gfa-1 sitting on a shelf that could use a rebuild and I haven't bothered with it yet, lol.
It's always tricky to know what to do in these situations, will it ever be reliable, is it practical to restore it back to original, is it better to rebuild it with modern components to make it better than it was originally, how much work are you willing to put into it and would anyone appreciate everything you have done or will it just get people saying 'you've ruined it' ? Basically it is a curiosity at best unless it is fully rebuilt and even then could it be used as a daily driver ? It has more limitations than possibilities unless you redesign and rebuild it but in reality you are just putting a new amp in an old case.
can't wait for the spherical amp next
Must be a pain in the arse to work on as xraytonyb did a video on one and had issues repairing it.
It’s annoying but in some ways easier to work on also once it’s laid out, a very odd design. Definitely a hot box though
B-6 exploding? You don't wanna see that the b-2 can do :D
Go for it, probably won't get a chance to work on another so obscure.
BEHOLD THE OBELISK ⬛
An old and cheap receiver I don't know what the enthusiasm is here
Definate troll lol
Shmroll troll😊 I just don't understand what the enthusiasm is about. An old Sensui receiver with mediocre construction, anemic sound and a million faults
I have one that is starting to have issues (loosing sound on one side, or static noises when it is on without anything playing) do you think it is worst it to send it to restoration?
It sounds like a dirty control, possibly speaker protection relay or the preout-main in jumpers on the back. I would send it to someone to have it checked over at the very least and make sure service bulletins are done asanything that jeopardises the VFETs would be a death sentence for the amplifier if they fail.
At that time i believe the Luxman D109 was the top end player
Excellent video and discussion....very informative. Have a Luxman D-117.. was advised to stay away from the Chinese laser replacement as compared to the original discontinued Sony laser . However bought the copy version and after watching this video surely will leave the installation to a professional .:)
Hi, I have Harman / Kardon AVR 171S which is behaving very weirdly. It's a 7.2 channel network receiver. Off Late, I could notice that the Front Left channel has lower gain than the Front Right channel. If I automatically calibrate the speakers using the provided microphone, then this issue is getting rectified and sound is coming correctly from all the channels, however the volume level get greatly reduced due to which I need to turn up the volume in order to get good quality sound reproduction. However this is not convenient and if I reset the unit to factory setting, etc, then again the earlier issue is re-occurring. One more issue I would like to highlight is that there are about 6 HDMI outputs, and the MHL o/p HDMI is not generating any signal and hence I had to connect my Shield TV media device to another HDMI o/p to make it work. In my understanding, I don't think there is any issue with the amplifier MOSFET transistors. So it could be something to do with the o/p circuit, but I am not that technical to comment further. Can you provide any insights based on your experience and can guide me with your suggestions?
That model looks real good but, i wonder how at 575w total, with big heatsinks that deserved new thermal paste before blowing everything i guess, i just pushes that wattage. Compared to Sanyo STK, i am sure with my preamp, i could push the same with HiRes quality the same wattage or more with the fan working, and it does have so small of a heatsink compared to that Sony. Good video, at least it works, i felt bad looking SMD under the hood...
I had one of these in my youth. Loved it, eventually replaced with ARC SP4 preamp and a variety of different amps. It had a very unique Class A amp type sound. Definitely better than the Marantz 1030 it replaced.
I decided to use one as well, how is it working for you?? I've replaced mine PCB with ESP32 and connected it to Home Assistant :D
I have 2 and not had issues with either but need to do more work on hacking them for sure with a better pwm driver
thank you for this :-) bought for the same reason, id be interested in seeing any future mods you do with it :-)
Ill come back to it in the future as I use it on my Snapmaker also :)
Potentiometer everyone can be demolished and folded. 1.1 mm drill, make a hole, thread and twist with a screw. A lot of fun.
Is this power transformer a toroidal transformer for this Amplifier?
Unknown as its potted in place, its made by Tamura and 13KG
